Chapter 15
Alone in the Rain
Waking up the next morning I looked over at the roses and noticed that they have been watered. I then looked at the clock and saw that it was still early, "Must have been mom," I muttered to myself. What made me confused was that my mother was once a florist, if she knew what the bouquet symbolized, why she would approve.
I walked out of my room and headed to the bathroom to clean up. I then headed to the kitchen and saw my mom, "Morning mom."
"Morning honey. Sit down and eat your breakfast while it's still hot."
"Okay mom." I started to eat my breakfast but I was really curious as to when my mom became so opened with me having a relationship with a boy.
My mother sat down in front of me as she quickly ate her breakfast.
"So mom..... did you water the roses for me in my room?"
She nodded, "It was nice of your friend to give you those roses on your birthday. Sorry for not having any time to spend it with you honey."
"It's okay mom. And-" she cut me off before I could finish.
"Thirteen roses, symbolic of a long lasting friendship."
"Long lasting friendship? Doesn't it mean that the sender has a crush on the receiver?" I blabbered out without thinking.
"Crush? Did a boy send you those Charmaine Sheh?"
I knew it I had to over think things, "No mom, it was just Tavia. I thought she was playing a prank on me that's all."
"Okay honey, finish your breakfast, I have to head off to work," she said as she gave me a peck on the forehead and headed out the door.
Burying my face in my hands I cried out, "Why'd I have to over think things. I should've known a celebrity like him wouldn't like me." I was really bummed, but I'm not sure why. "Do I like Raymond?" I asked myself. I wasn't sure how to answer that. I mean I think that he is a great friend, but liking him beyond that is a different story. I was so confused, but I knew one thing, I was not ready for a relationship yet.
After washing up the dishes, I decided to go out for a walk. As I was walking to the mall the day was all nice and sunny, but that didn't last long. More than half way there, the weather suddenly changed. Clouds emerged out of no where and the sky became dark, rain began to fall starting out slow, and before I knew it, it was raining cats and dogs. With no umbrella, I quickly ran over the the crowded bus shelter and hid there for the moment. As I was waiting for the traffic lights to change so I could cross a car drove rapidly through a large puddle of water that happened to be right in front of me.
I was soaking wet, from head to toe, just my luck.
I waited under the shelter hoping the catch a taxi or a bus to get home, but either someone got the taxi before I did, or the bus was full. As I stood there I noticed a familiar car that had stopped for the red light. It was Kevin. I quickly turned the other way hoping that he wouldn't see me, but it was too late.
"Hey Charmaine," Kevin called out as he rolled down the window.
Pretending I didn't hear him call me I was trying to make my way to the back of the crown until a man tapped on my shoulder and said, "Ma'am I think that man in the car is calling you."
Putting on a fake smile I thanked the guy and walked up to Kevin's car, "Hey," I said.
"Did you need a ride Charmaine? It's raining really hard."
He was right, but I didn't really want to be with him at the moment. "Umm... I'm good, just waiting for the bus."
"Come on get on, look at you, you're all wet, you're going to get a cold," he insisted.
I couldn't just say that I didn't want to be him, it would be rude, but I couldn't come up with a good excuse either. So I gave in and got in his car.
It was silent, I really had nothing to say to him until he spoke up, "Happy belated birthday."
"Thank-you."
"So did you get my text message yesterday?"
"Uh huh," I nodded, and as I did, "Ah-choo," I sneezed.
"Are you cold?" he quickly asked as he turned up the heat. Pulling over the the curb he took off his jacket and handed it to me. "Here put this on."
I was cold, I mean, how could I not be, I was soaking wet. I accepted his jacket, but he didn't start the car, instead he turned to face me.
He reached over the backseat and took out a gift wrapped box, "Charmaine, I got this for you."
"You really didn't have to," I took the gift and unwrapped it. It was a jewellery box, and in it was a necklace with a heart-shaped pendant. "Sorry Kevin I can't accept it," I said to him as I tried to give him back the gift.
"Why not?"
"You're with Gigi now, that's why," I said to him as I raised my voice a little.
"I got into a fight with her. She's not the one I want to be with you."
"So that's why you called her by my name?"
"She told you?"
"Why would you go and do that? You're going to ruin the friendship I have with her, why do you have to be so selfish?"
"I don't care about her, I want to be with you," he said as he grabbed my hand.
"Let go of me Kevin, we can't be together, nor do I want to be with you."
"I know what this is about, it's not about me and Gigi no more, it's about you and that guy. I know who he is. He's the guy from that band R2B. When did you become so superficial Charm? You weren't like that before, you never cared about fame."
"What are you talking about? You're the one who was wrong in the first place and you are twisting the story making me the bad guy? You chose to with Gigi in the first place, and I respected you're decision now will you leave me alone."
"Charmaine I love you though," he said. All of a sudden he leaned towards me and pressed his lips against mine.
"Stop it Kevin. What do you think you are doing?" I cried out as I tried to push him away.
"Charmaine I want you," he said as he ran his kisses down to my neck.
"Let me go," I said as I finally got out of his grip and slapped him across the face. I don't want to see you ever again.
His hand pressed against his face where I had slapped him. I threw his jacket and gift back at him as I left the car and ran into the rain.
I was furious as I continued to run, I also wanted to cry but I couldn't. I ran as far as my feet could take me, and to my surprise I arrived in front of Raymond's house. The lights were off, and his car wasn't there. No one was home. I didn't want to go home, but I couldn't talk to Tavia since she was with her parents. I crouched down at the spot that I was standing; I couldn't hold it in any longer. I buried my face in my knees as I cried alone in the rain.
