Chapter 22
Two Different People. Two Different Worlds.
Taking my phone into my hands I just stared at it, as I pressed some buttons to open up my phone book scrolling down the Raymond's number. "Anything is possible," I whispered to myself one for time to boost up some confidence.
Just as I was about the press the send button my phone rang. It was Raymond. I answered the phone trying to forget all the bad stuff that had happened.
"Hello?" I said.
"Hey Charmaine. How have you been doing lately?" Raymond said in a rather sombre tone.
"Nothing really. Are you okay Ray? You don't sound so great."
"Me?" he responded rather surprised. "Why do you ask? I'm perfectly fine."
"You just sounded rather upset that's all."
There was a long pause, we each has so much to say to one another, and I for one, didn't know where to begin.
"Are you free right now Charmaine? I wanted to have a word with you," he said.
I knew there was something wrong, but I also had this feeling that he would tell me, just not right now. "Where do you want to meet?" I asked him.
"I'm actually at the park near your place right now."
Putting down her phone Charmaine quickly got dressed and headed out. Just as she walked out the door Two cars pulled up in her driveway.
"Where are you going at this time of day?" my father asked as he got out of the car.
Coming out of the other car was Tavia and her parents.
"I just finished eating and thought I'd go for a walk," I quickly came up with an excuse. I think my dad would buy it, he is usually overwhelmed when he doesn't have to nag me to exercise.
"Oh okay, but don't be too long," he responded as he waved his hand at me as though he was shooing a fly away.
I looked over at Tavia signalling her to come with me. With a quick response Tavia asked for her parent's permission and we walked away.
"So who are you meeting Charmaine?" Tavia asked as we were approaching the park.
I stopped walking and turned to look at her. "Raymond, I think there's something wrong. He called me earlier asking to meet with me."
"Charmaine, I want to ask you something," Tavia said in a serious tone. "Do you like Raymond?"
Shock was written all over my face. The funny thing was, was that I myself am asking that question. I liked him, I knew I did. Something was holding me back though for admitting my feelings for him. Whether it was because I wasn't ready yet, or whether I was afraid that he didn't feel the same way and it would make things awkward between us, I just wasn't sure.
"Earth to Charmaine," Tavia spoke up. "Do you like Raymond Lam?"
"I...I..." I stuttered. I wasn't sure how to respond.
"You know what? You don't need to answer me, because I'll answer the question for you," she said. "It's obvious that you like him, admit it, and who in the world would not see that he is like head over heels for you. I just dont' get why you two don't admit your feelings for each other," Tavia ranted. "I just don't get it. I mean he's about to-" she stopped. There was something that she knew but she didn't want to tell me.
"He's about to what? What do you know Tavia? Spill," I said as I looked her in the eye.
"Spill? And this is coming from someone who can't even admit their feelings to someone that they like."
Why was she giving me all this attitude? I was a little fed up. "What do you know Tavia? How do you know that Raymond likes me, or that I like him? You're not us, and you can't read our minds or open up our hears and read it like a book," I yelled at her. Without thinking I continued, "Raymond won't like a girl like me. I'm just the average Joe, why would anyone like me. I'm not pretty, I'm not popular, I'm in my twenties and I still have to ask my parent's permission to go out. Raymond isn't my type of guy; there is no chance of us getting together. We are just two different people, in two different worlds."
Tavia looked at me with much disappointment, and I too felt the same. I'm such a coward.
She stared at me for a bit and said, "You know what Charm? If that's how you really feel, there is nothing that I can do about it." She turned her back to me and walked off.
I sat down on the bench under the tree. I looked up into the sky wondering what I was thinking when I said all that I had said. Tavia was just trying to help me open up, and I brushed her off as though she was an annoying pest.
Sitting there and staring off into space, I finally came back to my senses and realized that I came to the park to meet up with Raymond. I walked over to the swings and sat there.
"I thought he said that he was already here," I said to myself. I looked around but there was no one in sight. An hour has passed and I've tried calling him several times but I could never get through. I decided to give up and go home, just like I did with our possible relationship. ________________________________________________
