Chapter 4
The "Boyfriend"
"Guys," Tavia said as she dragged me into the little circle that was being created, "Meet Charmaine, my dear old cousin. Charmaine, this is Raymond, Bosco, and Ron."
I smiled at them, they all seemed really nice.
"I knew these guys since I was a kid, their parents used to always come to my parents' restaurant to eat," Tavia continued.
As I was following Tavia I slipped on a puddle of water. I thought that was it for me picturing myself falling to the ground in embarrassment. Just then someone caught me from behind.
"Are you okay?" he asked.
I nodded and then I spoke up, "Raymond right?"
"Yep, nice to meet you Charmaine," he answered as he stuck out his hand for me to shake.
"Thank-you, Raymond."
This time as we were walking down the stairs I almost slipped yet again, but luckily I caught my balance before I fell to the floor.
"You're a clumsy one aren't you," Raymond commented as he started to chuckle.
My face began to feel warm, but seeing him laugh also made me laugh. "You better not me laughing at me. It's not my fault I'm clumsy."
I continued to walk down the set of stairs, but just then a group of little boys ran past me from behind pushing me forward. Some grabbed a hold of my hand from behind causing us both to tumble down. In my head I was thinking, was I the lucky one to have someone break my fall, or was the person that I landed on very unlucky. My eyes were closed from the chaos, but as I opened them I realized it was Raymond I landed on. "I'm so sorry," I apologized as I quickly got off him.
"Don't worry about it, we're friends right?" He said with a laugh.
Boy I was sure embarrassed for the third time today in front of him. I helped him up when we heard Tavia yell, "Hey what are you guys doing back there?"
"Coming Tav," I yelled back.
He looked at me and laughed, "No need to feel too embarrassed, I won't tell anyone," he said as he winked at me.
We began to pick up our pace to catch up with the others, but as approached them Tavia asked, "What were two laughing hyenas doing back there? What's so funny? I could hear your laughter from where I was."
I looked at Raymond as he wanted to start laughing at my clumsiness again but then he looked back at me as we responded at the same time, "Nothing."
Tavia looked at us suspiciously, "There's got to be something, but don't worry, I'll figure it out," she finished with a big smirk on her face. "Ron, Bosco, let's go and leave these two behind." She linked arms with them and walked off.
"Uh oh, Ray got someone mad," Ron commented as we laughed.
"I'm not mad," Tavia spoke up, "Who said I was mad?" She turned her head around and winked at me and stuck her tongue out at Ray. "So were do you guys want to go?"
"How about a movie?" I asked.
"Sounds great," Bosco responded. "But I don't think it's too convenient."
"I agree with Bosco," Raymond cut in. "And with those reporters around, we won't have any fun at all."
"Reporters?" I pondered allowed as everyone stared at me, the only one who was completely lost.
"Charmaine of course there would be reporters when hanging around with these three," Tavia whispered to me, trying to clear things up.
"Why would there be reporters around these three though? It's not like they are famous or anything?" I asked again, but this time they did not only stare at me, but also laughed at me.
"You mean you're cousin doesn’t know who we are Tav?" Ron asked.
"I guess not," Tavia replied scratching her head.
"Well I guess we shall introduce ourselves to this young lady here, right guys?" Raymond commented as he waited for the other three to agree with him.
"Miss Sheh I am pleased to introduce you to," Tavia began to say.
"R2B!" the guys shouted as they finished Tavia's sentence.
Frankly, it didn't really matter who they were to me, but I found that they were really nice guys unlike what the media says they are. I stared at them blankly as the word "so" kept going through my head trying to escape through my mouth, but I knew that would be rude so I locked it up. The guys waited for me to respond, as I tried my best to think of something nice to say.
"Nice to meet you," I finally spoke up with a full thrown on fake smile.
"That's a first," Bosco commented. "A girl who doesn't care of our existence?"
"Aww. Is poor little Bosco's heart torn," Tavia teased as she walked beside me.
"Very funny," Bosco fought back. "I find it more amusing."
"So what now?" Ron spoke up.
"What do you mean?" Raymond asked.
"Well what are we going to do?"
"How about we rent some movies and go over to Raymond's place," Bosco answered with a smirk.
"I don't mind," Raymond spoke up. "How about you girls?"
I was slightly out of it thinking of the situation that had happened between me, Gigi and Kevin. Tavia nudged me on the shoulder asking, "Do you want to come along?"
"Sure," I replied with little to no energy. What else was I to do, sit at home and sulk when I can go out and party? Why care about them if they don't even care about me?
Tavia sensed that there was something wrong and looked at me as she analysed my facial expression.
"Can't get enough of me Tavia?" I commented as I noticed her staring.
"Sure, you go and think that," she defended.
There was a bit of a silence between the two of us as we made some distance between the guys until Tavia spoke up again, "Charm, is there something wrong?"
I shook my head, "No don't worry about it."
"Charm, you know you can always tell me what's going on."
Tavia has always been really close to me, and we always shared our secrets with one another, and I needed to get this situation off my chest, and she was the perfect candidate. "You're right there is something wrong," I said as I came to a stop.
"Just a minute," she said to me. "Hey you guys," she shouted, "Walk along first; we'll catch up in a bit!"
I saw Raymond turn around, and it was obvious he was concerned. "Everything okay?" he asked as he began to walk back a bit with the others.
"Yeah, everything is fine. Like I said, you guys run along first," Tavia spoke up again.
"How about we sit over there? We're tired anyways," Bosco said pointing over the near by benches.
"Sounds good. My feet are tired from all the walking we did this morning," Ron said.
"Don't worry, we'll give you you're space for you're girl-talk," Raymond stated.
We all walked over the benches and sat down. Tavia and I sat on a separate bench away from the guys. I began telling Tavia what had happened between Kevin, Gigi and I as she was absorbing the story that was being told to her. I noticed that as I was talking to Tavia Raymond would constantly look over wanting to know what was going on.
When we were done, we walked up to the guys hearing them telling jokes They seemed to be a good group of people to be with especially in the depressed state I was. We began to walk towards the video rental store as the guys put on their shades trying to hide their faces.
Right when we approached the glass entrance of the rental store it was just my luck, standing in the back corner was Kevin and Gigi. I froze at the door as the rest of them entered. I couldn't walk in, how could I face them after what they did to me? Was I really able to accept them like how I wanted to and be friends with them still?
Raymond walked back towards me and asked, "Are you okay Charmaine?" He crouched down slightly to look at my facial expression.
I nodded as I looked at his concerned face, "I'm okay."
"Do you know those people?" he asked referring to Kevin and Gigi whom I've been staring at for a while already.
I looked at him, not wanting to answer. It's not like I wanted to know them, I just do. It seemed like he knew what was going on in my mind as he responded to my expression, "Don't worry I understand." Suddenly he put his arms around my shoulders. "You're not alone to confront them," he spoke up as he pulled me into the store, "Let's pick out some movies then." As I walked in with Raymond his arm gave me a sense of security and that I wasn't alone to confront this odd situation. Right after we entered the store Kevin spotted us and walked over hand-in-hand with Gigi. I looked away as Raymond whispered into my ear, "Remember, you're not alone," he patted my shoulder for insurance.
"Charmaine," Gigi yelled out.
"Hi Gigi," I said as I put on a force smile.
"Who's he?" Kevin asked pointing at Raymond.
I looked up at Raymond not know what to say, and then he patted me on the shoulder again. "I'm her boyfriend," he spoke up.
