Chapter 6
The Shadow
"Let's go and catch up to the others," I said.
Raymond just stood there and looked at me, "I'm really sorry."
"Don't worry about it, you had good intentions, there's no need for you to say sorry."
"I'll never look into you're conversation again."
"Come on let's catch up to the others."
We began to pick up our pace. Raymond walked up to the guys as I walked beside Tavia. When we were a good distance away from the guys Tavia asked,”So are you staying Charm?"
I nodded gently, "I sorted some things out."
"Sorted things out?" she questioned as one of her eyebrows rose. "So what exactly is going on with you two like I asked earlier?"
"What are you talking about Tav? There is nothing going on between us."
"You sure about that. Like I said again, it's not like you to walk with a guy that you've known for a couple hours with his arm around you're shoulders."
"Really Tav, nothing is going on. After what had happened between me and Kevin, I don't think I want to jump into another relationship just yet."
Suddenly my phone rang, "Beep! Beep!" It was a text message. "Speak of the devil," I muttered under my breath. The text message was from Kevin, "Charmaine, we need to talk. Are you free later on today?"
"Who is it?" Tavia asked.
I handed her my phone that viewed Kevin's message.
"So what are you going to do now?"
I shrugged, "I don't know. I don't really want to see him. He's with Gigi now, and they seem happy together. It's not like I'm going to break them apart just so I can feel better." I looked at the phone, and I looked over at Raymond, remembering the things that he had gone through. At least my friend and I are still friends, right? Then I decided, "I think I'm going to meet up with him, and straighten things out."
"What are you going to do? Tell him to break up with that so-called best friend of yours."
"Don't say that Tav, she's still my friend after all. I'm just going to talk to him, and make sure that he treats her well. There's no point in breaking them up if he doesn't even like me."
"You're going to do what? You're going to look out for after what she had done for you?" Tavia hit her head, as made it seem like she was talking to an idiot, being me. "Oh boy Charm, I'll never find another person as dumb as you," she joked.
"Hey, give me some respect; I am older than you after all."
After fooling around I messaged Kevin back.
"You're really going to follow through with you're plan?"
"Yep."
"But I thought you're going to hang out with me and those celebrities tonight," she pouted.
"I am," I said with a smile.
"But aren't you meeting up with that Kevin guy?"
"Not tonight, tomorrow. I'm not going to miss out on a chance to see a movie with dearest cousin."
"Sure. Like I'll believe that. You're just probably staying to hang out with MY famous friends."
"You know I don't care about a person's fame, but their person."
"What ever you say my usually down-to-earth cousin."
When we arrived at Raymond's house he told us to go to his recreation room. It's was huge. There's a pool table, poker table, ping-pong table, and not to forget, the big screen TV. He brought down while Bosco was setting up the movie for us to watch, Ron and Tavia were busy going through Raymond's CD collection.
"I'm going to go get some chips and drinks," Raymond spoke up. "Any preferences?"
"How about I go up and help you?"
"It's okay; you're the guest after all. You just sit here."
"Sit here and watched them," I pointed over Bosco who was struggling with the TV wires, and Tavia and Ron who were singing at the moment. I smirked, "I think I'll pass."
"If you say so," Raymond chuckled.
We walked upstairs to the kitchen grabbing drinks from the fridge, and chips from the cupboards.
Just then my phone rang again, "Beep! Beep!" Another text message, and again it was from Kevin.
This time he wrote, "Charmaine, are you really busy? I'm sorry for what had happened, I really want to talk to you right now, see you, and hear you're sweet voice."
I was a little confused, it didn't hit me right away that Kevin was a player. His words just seemed to have melted in my heart. Is this what they call blinded by love? Face the facts Charmaine; as much as you want to give up on him, you still like him.
Meanwhile, as I was deep in my thoughts Raymond was looking at me. I felt his eyes have been on me for a while. I looked up at him and he asked, "Who was that text message from?"
I didn't want to tell him. I wanted to hear the things that Kevin was saying and show the world that he still likes me, but deep inside I knew it was wrong. It would be a disgrace to let everyone know before I fix up the entire mess that has been created.
I looked at him waiting for my answer. "It's no one, just some ad."
He looked at me, I knew he wanted to question my answer but surprisingly he didn't. Just then the door bell rang.
"The pizza I ordered arrived," he said as he went over to open the door and get the pizza. Walking back towards the kitchen he smiled at me pretending that nothing had happened, "Everyone's probably hungry by now, we better head back downstairs before they start the movie without us."
By the time we got downstairs, they had started the movie. We all sat down quietly giving our entire attention to the TV. When the movie was done, it was already pretty late.
"Who needs a ride home?" Ron yelled out.
"I do!" Bosco was the first to put his hand up.
"What about us?" Tavia asked referring to her and me.
"Where do you live Charmaine?" Ron asked.
"Don't worry about it," I said.
"It's dark out. I wouldn't be a gentleman if I let a girl like you walking on the streets alone and this time," he joked.
"He's right Charmaine. These men here are for us to use. No need to be nice to them," Tavia spoke up with a huge smile on her face.
"Don't listen to her Charmaine," Ron said.
"I live on 5th Street near downtown."
"Raymond, how about you are a gentleman and drive Charmaine home," Ron said. "I'm going in the opposite direction, and I have to drive home both Bosco and Tavia."
"No, no. It's okay, if it's inconvenient, I'll go home on my own," I said.
"No big deal, I'll give you a lift," Raymond said.
"Okay then let's get going," Bosco announced pointing towards the door.
While Raymond was driving me back home there was an awkward silence lurking around in the car. I decided to speak up to break the silence, and the awkwardness along with it, "You know you didn't have to drive me home."
"I did. It's dangerous for you to go home alone. I would have felt guilty if anything were to have happened to you."
"Well thank-you then," I said as I looked back down at my phone. It was holding it in my hands just in case Kevin was going to text message me again. The message he left me kept repeating in my head. What could he have meant by that? He has Gigi already.
"Raymond just stop right there after the traffic lights," I said as we arrived.
"Do you need me to walk you in?" he asked caringly.
I shook my head. "I'll be okay from here," I said as I got out of the car. I turned my head back around, "Good night Raymond, and thanks for the ride. Maybe we'll see each other again some time."
"Good night to you too. We'll call Tavia, and make some more plans together."
I turned around and walked towards my door. On my way there I saw a shadow at the side.
The shadow began to walk towards me.

[SPOILERS to DOL: before they got married. Ray went to look for Charmaine but she was busy with her work so then he went to look for her. The company had this competition thing, and one of the competitors couldn't make it so Ray took the spot. And the scene comes after that.]
