Chapter 10

The Dinner

Hebe collapsed onto the cushioned stool in the changing room and leaned on the mirror. She had been walking in and out of the cubicle, changing in and out of the many many outfits in the fashion boutique Lee Hom had brought her to. When is this going to end? She had never worn so many outfits in her life, it was more than the number of clothes she had worn in her entire life. It was not until someone came knocking on her door before Hebe stood up and got into another outfit.

She emerged out of the cubicle. Two sales assistants beamed at her as they walked towards her and started adjusting the dress Hebe had on her. Hebe looked around the boutique and eventually spotted Lee Hom standing in the far corner, talking on his cell phone with his back facing her. She turned her gaze away as Lee Hom disconnected his call and turned around.

"OK...We'll take this one plus the rest that we'd picked out earlier..." Lee Hom looked at Hebe from head-to-toe before giving out commands to the sales assistants around her.
"Wait Wait~! We're... taking ALL of them?" Hebe asked, her eyes wide open as the sales assistants picked up handfuls of almost every different kind of outfit they had in the boutique.
"Please send them to my house tonight." Lee Hom ignored Hebe and said to the assistants. He held Hebe's hand and pulled her out of the boutique and into his car before Hebe could start protesting.

"Wait!Stop the car!Stop! Are we really getting all those clothes?But..but...The clothes must've costed a bomb-" Hebe had been grumbling ever since they left the boutique.
"Stop being so noisy!" Lee Hom said in a gruff tone and glared at her from the ccorner of his eye, he was clearly very irritated by Hebe's words. Hebe stopped abruptly and looked out of her window, her mouth pouting. She peered out at the unfamiliar streets outside. Wait a minute, where are they going? Hebe turned back to face Lee Hom.

"Where are we going now?"
"For dinner of course. We're meeting a friend of mine who just came back from the States." Lee Hom said.
"Friend? He's your friend, not mine, why do I have to go. You can just drop me around the corner and I'll go home myself."
"You just had your hair done and some new clothes on, wouldn't it be a waste if you didn't walk around a bit?" Lee Hom said matter-of-factly. Hebe thought for a moment and peered at her reflection on a car mirror. He was right, it will be a pity. The clothes are not cheap, neither is her new hairdo.

Lee Hom and Hebe walked into a classy restaurant. Hebe felt uneasy as people gaze at her the moment she walked in. Her cheeks started burning as she felt their gazes on her everywhere she went. She stuck closely to Lee Hom and lowered her head as they made their way through the restaurant.

Lee Hom was aware of everyone's attention on them ever since they walked into the place. He had long been used of such attention as a kid. He peered over his shoulders only to see the top of Hebe's head.

"C'mon, have some confidence in yourself, they're looking at you because you look good." Lee Hom smiled and lifted her chin with his hand. Hebe looked up and blushed even more. They walked to a table by the window where a young man sat, sipping his wine as he peered out of the window at the beautiful night view. "Vanness!" Lee Hom called.

"Hey, pal!" Vanness stood up from his seat and exchanged hugs with Lee Hom. He looked over Lee Hom's shoulders. "Wooh, and who's this beautiful lady over here?"
"Hebe. Hebe, this is Vanness." They shook hands and settled down. Vanness leaned towards Lee Hom and whispered into his ear.
"She's your new girl? She's cute."
"Nah, some complicated matters. It's a long story?" Lee Hom answered and ignored the slight churn in his stomach.
"She's not? Well, that is a good thing to know..." Vanness shifted her glance to Hebe and started a conversation with her.

Throughout the dinner, Vanness and Hebe were the ones who were talking. Hebe found that she had a lot to talk about with Vanness, he was a really outgoing guy as well as a gentleman. Vanness seemed to show interest in her, and that made her feel happy and uneasy at the same time. She had never really known many guys in her circle of friends, let alone charming guys such as the two that were in front of her. Was her life taking a turn for the better? She wasn't sure, the only thing she was sure was that she liked the way she feels about herself right at this moment.

Lee Hom sat miserably in his seat, chewing slowly on his steak. He had been observing Vanness and Hebe at the table for the past half hour, and as each minute past, he just felt worse. His wine felt so sour all of a sudden, his steak did not taste as good anymore. He fixed his gaze on Hebe and watched her laugh at whatever Vanness was saying. He turned his gaze away whenever Hebe looked back at him. He had never seen her laugh like that before, then again, had he ever seen her laugh or even smile whenever they were together? But look, they're oh-so-blissful in their own world and seemed to be oblivious of his presence.

"And so...I really didn't had much relationships, sad to say, maybe I don't fall in love easily..." Vanness said as he took a sip of his wine. "How about you, Hebe?"
"M..mme..?" Hebe shifted uneasily in her seat as she stole a glance at Lee Hom. "I...er.." Hebe grabbed her glass of water and gulped uneasily, searching for words to say. Her thoughts were interrupted by Lee Hom.
"I'm full." Lee Hom cleared his throat and grabbed his napkin.
"Full? You sure? Your steak's not even half-touched. The steak here is delicious! You're not finishing it?"
"Nah, I don't have much appetite today...no idea why..." Lee Hom avoided Hebe's gaze and peered around the restaurant.
"Oh...You ok? You don't look well, you wanna go back first? I can send Hebe home later..." Vanness said, raising his eyebrow with a slight grin on his face.
"No, I'm ok...I can wait."

---

"Hey, I had a wonderful time with you today. I was thinking, can i take you out for a drive later on?" Vanness asked Hebe after dinner. He leaned towards her, placed his hand at the back of her chair and glanced at Lee Hom. Lee Hom choked slightly on his drink at Vanness's words. He stared at Hebe, observing her reaction. Hebe blushed and peered uneasily at the two.
"Eeer...I guess...eerm..." She looked at Lee Hom, as if waiting for him to say something.
"I hope you'll accept my invitation, I really want to get to know you better. Really." Vanness gaze at Hebe, with chestnut brown eyes that seem to generate a huge amount of electricity. It made her blush even more.
"Eer.. I...I'll love to..." Hebe smiled back at Vanness. Lee Hom looked at the two person in front of him and bit the insides of his mouth. Great, now he felt like the brightest thing on earth. Maybe he should just disappear out of sight and leave the two of them alone. Alone... At the thought of what could happen later tonight, he felt his heart dropping, his stomach turning upside down. Lee Hom cleared his throat the n-th time this evening.

"Well then, you two can go ahead. Eer, I guess I'll make a move." Lee Hom stood up and walked off from their table almost immediately.
