Chapter 16

The Letter

The piercing rays from the hot afternoon sun caused Hebe and Lee Hom to strain their eyes as they ran through the narrow alley towards Hebe's aunt's house. She stopped in front of a rusty metal gate painted blue. Hebe stepped a few steps back and called for her aunt. There was no answer. Lee Hom exchanged glances with Hebe before walking towards the door, giving it a hard knock. The knock caused the metal gate to swing inwards.

"The gate's open." LeeHom gasped as he followed Hebe into the house. He collided into her as Hebe stopped abruptly. It took them awhile to register the scene in front of them.
"What happened?..." Lee Hom heard Hebe muttered to herself as they stared at the mess in the porch leading to the house. All of her Aunt's plants had withered and broken pieces of the clay pots containing the plants were all over the place.
"Hebe..." Lee Hom called out and stepped beside her. Hebe turned and looked at him. She looked at what he was staring at and gasped. The windows of the house were smashed and broken and the door of the house was ajar.

Broken glasses, furnitures and photo frames were what greeted them as they rushed into the house. Hebe could not control herself any longer, her knees wobbled and she burst into tears. Lee Hom went over and supported her by the shoulders.

"Hebe, calm down, we have to find out who is behind this."
"It's my fault...I caused all these trouble, where are they? Are they in danger?..." Hebe said in between sobs.
"Calm down. You try to recall if there's any place safe enough in this house where your Aunt might could've left her passports or important documents." Lee Hom said as he looked around the place for any note Hebe's Aunt could have left behind. Hebe's calmed herself down and thought hard. Lee Hom walked into one of the rooms and rummaged through the mess.
"The cupboard!" He heard Hebe called from outside and rushed out of the room. They ran into another bedroom. Hebe pulled open the doors of a run-down wooden wardrobe. The wardrobe was empty with only hangers in it. Hebe squatted down onto the floor and touched the base of the empty closet. "My Aunt would keep all our important documents in a hidden compartment in this cupboard." Hebe explained as she lifted up a small portion of the wooden base of the wardrobe to reveal a shallow dark hole. Inside the hole rested a rusty, dented biscuit tin.

Hebe grabbed the biscuit tin out of the hole and sat on the bed. She forced open the tin and stared at it.

"The passports are gone..." All they saw was a white envelope with Hebe's name on it. "Where could they have gone?..."
"Don't panic, at least they left behind a letter. But... Tian Fu Zhen?...Aint' your surname Lin?" Lee Hom looked at Hebe. She stared at the letter. Her name. Why is her surname Tian and not Lin on the letter? She tore open the letter.

Zhen,

I'm sorry to have gone away just like that. I'm sorry to have kept the truth from you. The truth of your true identity. You must be wondering why I wrote your name as Tian Fu Zhen, and not Lin Fu Zhen. You must be wondering why I have leave and why your life is in danger.

This is because, Tian is your real father's surname. The truth is, you are Tian Yong Liang's illegitimate daughter. Tian Yong Liang is the president of HeTian Enterprise. Yong Liang's father, your grandfather, objected to your parents' wish to be together. He forced your father to get married with another woman and chased your mother out of the house. She had no choice but to bring you up single-handedly. She chose to keep the truth from you for as long as possible because she didn't want to have anything to do with the Tians ever again. But she knew that the truth will be revealed sooner or later. She'd expected something like that to happen. Before she died, she had told me to take care of you, and tell you the truth when the time comes.

Now's the time for you to go back to the Tians. Only your father can tell you why all this is happening. As for me, you don't have to worry, I am fine. It's just that, I can't tell you where I am now, because I don't know for sure. Zhen, you have to learn to take care of yourself. Go back to the Tians.

Love,
Aunt.

Hebe stared at the letter as her head felt giddy. Everything her Aunt said in the letter was making her confused. She could not understand a single word her Aunt said. What Enterprise? What father? Lee Hom, on the other hand, was calmed and focused. HeTian Enterprise. A name so familiar to him. If Homway was the strongest Organisation able to control the economy of the Chinese population, then HeTian Enterprise could be said as their most powerful enemy, their biggest threat. Hebe was the daughter of Tian Yong Liang? But... Tian Yong Liang is dead. Flashes of the news came in Lee Hom's mind. The funeral of Tian Yong Liang was featured in almost every newspaper just a few weeks ago. Besides that, there had also been news of an internal dispute over Tian Yong Liang's will, and who was to inherit his wealth. Could Hebe be involved in his will? Was this why her life was in danger?

"Lee Hom!" Lee Hom was so deep in his thoughts he did not realised that Hebe was calling his name. "Do you know what is all this? Do you know what this mean?"
"Tian Yong Liang, your father, has passed away last month..." Lee Hom explained everything he knew to Hebe.

"What should I do now?" Hebe asked after hearing Lee Hom's explanation.
"Listen to your Aunt. Go and find the Tians, that's the only way to know everything."
"But...If what you said was true, that they are the reason why my life is in danger? Why do I have to go?"
"No, that's the only way to find out about your identity. I will go with you. I will protect you." Lee Hom grabbed Hebe's shoulders and assured her.

"Failed again? How could this have happen?!" Patty screamed into the phone. "I want her dead!"

Just then, Zax burst into the room and snatched the phone from her.

"Stop everything, you heard me? No one is to harm her! She has to live! You get it?" Zax warned the people on the other end of the phone and hung up. He turned to glare at Patty. Old Wang walked into the room.

"Patty! What do you think you are doing? Carrying out orders on your own!" Old Wang scolded.
"Why can't I? We all want her dead right? That's the only way to take back what my father left for her! Isn't this what we all wanted?" Patty shot back.
"Shut up! We can't now. You heard me? We can't!" Patty stared at Zax in confusion. What did he mean they can't now? She looked at Old Wang, then back at Zax as he continued. "His lawyer just revealed the conditions in order for Tian Fu Zhen to inherit HeTian. Tian Yong Liang's will stated that his wealth can, and will only be inherited by Tian Fu Zhen alone and no one else. If she died, EVERYTHING will be donated to charity. The whole empire will be gone! You get it now? We can't harm her, Patty! Tian Fu Zhen cannot die! Or all our efforts will go down the drain!" Zax scolded. "Dad, what do you suggest we do now?" He turned to Old Wang.
"I have a plan. Have you forgotten what the lawyer mentioned? The will also stated that Tian Fu Zhen can only transfer whatever she had under her to her husband and no one else." Old Wang said, his lips, slowly creasing into a smile.
"You mean..." Patty stepped forward and looked at Zax. "Him?"
"Yes, as long as she marries Zax, we can still get the fortune. As for now, we'll wait. She will come knocking on our door. She will fall into our trap."
