Chapter 17

The Threat

Los Angeles, United States of America
-----------------------------------------

Hebe dragged her feet on the ground as she lagged behind Lee Hom. Was this a good idea? Does she really have to go, afterall, that whatever organisation was worlds apart from her. How could she have anything to do with them? Why couldn't she just leave all these behind and continue living her ordinary life?

Hebe felt a tug at her hand.

"What are you doing?" Lee Hom turned around and held her hand.
"I..I was thinking...Do we really have to go? We can just leave it and go back to Taiwan..." Hebe muttered.
"Hebe, do you think HeTian will let you off after what they have done?" Lee Hom held her shoulders. "Someday, you have to face it, don't you want to know more about your father?"
"Yes, but... I have a bad feeling about this."
"Whatever happens, I will be with you. Hebe, believe me." Lee Hom pulled her close. Hebe leaned on him, somehow, she felt secured in his arms, his words had the power to calm her down.

Lee Hom and Hebe walked through the arrival gates. Hebe was wondering how to get to HeTian while Lee Hom was consciously scrutinising their surroundings. He spotted two men in smart black suits in a far corner in the left and turned to another corner in the right, just as what he'd expected, he saw another two men in black suits. Lee Hom smiled to himself.

"Hebe, looks like they were already expecting us." Lee Hom muttered softly in her ears.
"Huh?...What do you mean?"
"Look around you." Lee Hom whispered back and held her hand. Hebe gazed her surroundings carefully. True enough, she spotted four suspicious men dressed in black walking in their direction.
"They're coming! What do we do now?" Hebe started walking faster and faster out of the airport.
"Hey, no hurry!" Lee Hom pulled her back. "Since they're expecting us, these men can bring us to where we're going." The moment Lee Hom finished his sentence, one of the men started to spoke.

"Miss Tian, Mr Wang, our master is expecting you, please follow us." The men gestured for them to follow them. Lee Hom and Hebe followed them out of the airport. There was already a black limousine waiting outside for them.

The limousine drove though a large gate and along a long driveway before a huge mansion came into sight. It pulled up into a porch in front of the house. Hebe gasped as she stepped out of the car. And she thought Lee Hom's mansion was the biggest house she ever saw.

The Tian's mansion was elegantly furnished, large and spacious, the whole place had a strong eastern touch to it. If it wasn't because Hebe was in such a house right at that moment, she would not have believed that there was a mansion decorated almost like a chinese palace, in a western place like LA.

"Miss Tian, please follow us, while we bring you to our master." One of the men spoke. Another man stopped Lee Hom as he tried to follow them. "I'm sorry, Mr Wang, you'd have to stay here." Hebe turned around and wanted to protest.
"Ok." Lee Hom stopped Hebe from speaking and turned to her. "Don't worry, I'll wait for you here..." Hebe looked at him and hesitated. She didn't think this was a good idea, but she knew she did not have a choice.

Hebe followed the men through a series of winding hallways. She had no idea how long she had been walking before she was led through a door into a room. It was dark as the curtains were drawn fully, but she could still vaguely see a bed in a far corner. Someone was lying on the bed. All of a sudden, a voice sounded from behind her.

"He's your grandfather." Hebe turned abruptly at the voice. She saw the door being closed and a middle-aged man stood in front of her, his hands behind his back.
"Wh..who are you?" The man ignore Hebe's question.
"Look at him." The man motioned for her to move forward.

Hebe walked slowly towards the side of the bed and squatted down. Right at the same moment, the ailing man on the bed opened his eyes.

"Fff..Fu Zhen..." The ailing man reached out a trembling hand. This man was her grandfather? Hebe stared at him, not sure how to react. "I'm...sssooo...sorry..." The ailing man tried his best to get the words out of his mouth. These three words were what he had been wanting to say to Hebe and her mother. Old Mr. Tian looked at his granddaughter, someone he had never seen from the day she was born. This young lady was a spliting image from her mother. "I was wrong to force your mother to leave Yong Liang. Because of this, he had hated me." Old Mr. Tian continued, pausing now and then to gasp for breath. "I really want to make up for the wrongs I've done to your mother...and you..."
"Mum...passed away 20 years ago..." Hebe muttered to Old Mr. Tian. He remained silent as tears filled his eyes. The reason Yong Liang left his wealth to Hebe was because he too, wanted to make up for the things that Hebe and her mother went through. Old Mr. Tian reprimanded himself for realising this only too late. The only thing he could do now was to protect Hebe as long as he still had one last breath.

He knew that HeTian was now in grave danger, Old Mr. Tian shifted his gaze to Old Wang, who was standing at the end of the bed. Old Wang was a loyal servant to the Tians for many years, Old Mr. Tian could not believe that this cunning fox was eying the Tians' wealth all along. He had gotten into this state all because of Old Wang. Together with Yong Liang's wife and daughter, Patty. If he had let Yong Liang marry Hebe's mother, all these would not have happened, he only had himself to blame for bringing this upon himself.

"Fu Zhen, fight for what your father left you. Don't let others take it away from you..." Old Mr. Tian pleaded as he look at Hebe, then to Old Wang. Hebe shifted her gaze to Old Wang. He was wearing a smile of victory, as if he had expected Old Mr. Tian to say that, but he wasn't afraid at all, he had the means to make Hebe hand over the Tians' empire.

"The choice is yours." Old Wang started to speak.
"I will protect what belongs to my father." Hebe stood up, she had no idea where she had summoned the courage to stand up for something she had felt so foreign about. A few moments ago, she was still thinking of running away from everything.
"Fine with me, but I have to remind you that I can assure your safety, but I can't assure the lives of your closed ones." Old Wang turned his back against Hebe.
"Wh..what do you mean?"

As if expecting Hebe's reaction, Old Wang took out a miniature remote and pointed it towards an artpiece hanging on the wall. As soon as he pressed a button on the remote, the painting emerged out and slid out of place to reveal a plasma screen. Old Wang pressed another button as the screen is switched on.
