Chapter 20

The Choice

"I need someone to get us out of LA as soon as possible... Yes...Casablanca Motel...Hurry." Lee Hom disconnected the phone call he had made to New York, he'd figured it would be safer and faster for reinforcements to come from New York than from Taiwan, that would take up too much time. After the ride away from Tians' mansion, Lee Hom had abandoned the limousine in a deserted gas station and took a cab away so as to prevent the Tians from tracing their whereabouts. Lee Hom and Hebe had to put up in a run-down motel for the night, while they waited for backup.

Lee Hom was observing the scene outside the motel's windown for any suspicious vehicles when he heard a scream outside the room. It was Hebe's voice! He turned around and looked around the room. It was till then that he realised that Hebe was not inside the room. She had left while he was making the phone call. Lee Hom dashed out of the room and ran towards the source of the sound.

He was halfway down the stairs when he saw a burly drunk man pulling Hebe as she was clinging helplessly to the railings of the stairs. Rage started creeping up Lee Hom's spine as he rushed forward and gave the man a kick in his beer belly. The man dropped his bottle of beer and stepped backwards in pain, releasing his grip on Hebe's wrist. He became unconscious as soon as he fell to the ground. Lee Hom wanted to teach him a lesson but Hebe pulled him back.

"I think that's enough, he's already unconscious..." Hebe wrapped her arms around his.
"Are you ok? Did he do anything to you?" Lee Hom turned to Hebe as they made their way up the stairs. Hebe shook her head.
"Lucky you came..." Hebe smiled to herself, she felt secured around Lee Hom. He could make her feel safe and protected and she liked that kind of feeling.
"And why did you run out all of a sudden, you know it's not safe to go out alone..."
"I just wanted to get us something to eat, we haven't eaten anything since we came."

Hebe sat down on the bed and removed the plastic wrapper of her bread. Lee Hom grabbed a can of coffee and resumed his position by the window. He turned and looked at Hebe. She was holding the bread in her hands and staring at it.

"Hebe!" Hebe snapped out of her thoughts, she did not realise that Lee Hom had been calling her name several times and was now sitting beside her. "Are you ok?" He held her hand in his. Hebe nodded weakly.
"I'm fine...I'm just...a little worried..." Hebe sighed. "Scared..." Tears started welling up in her eyes. Lee Hom felt a tug in his heart as he saw tears in her eyes. He pulled her close to him. He could understand how she felt. It must have been hard for her, everything had happened so fast. One moment she had found out about her true identity, and the next, she was running away from her new found family. A thought came into Lee Hom's mind. What if...they had not met each other? Would things be worse? Lee Hom suddenly felt thankful to his family's jade pendant.
"Whatever happens, I'll be with you. Hebe, I love you." Lee Hom hugged her tightly. Hebe felt all her fears and worries start to disappear as she lied in his embrace.

Lee Hom pricked his ears as he noticed something different from his surroundings. Previously, the evening had been peaceful and quiet, with little traffic outside the motel. However, he could faintly hear the sound of wheels on the sandy road and they were getting louder and louder. He left Hebe sitting by the bed and walked towards the window.

He was right.

Three black cars were streaming into the porch of the motel. The Tians'. Lee Hom looked into the distance, his men hadn't arrived. Without his reinforcements, he would not be able to fight the Tians' and protect Hebe. It was obvious that Old Wang had brought more men than this afternoon at the mansion. He would not be able to handle them alone, besides, they were armed. Although he was sure they would not harm Hebe, but they would be dying to kill him.

"They're here." Lee Hom muttered to Hebe, without waiting for her to respond, he continued. "I want you to take down this number," Lee Hom grabbed a pen and scribbled some numbers on Hebe's hand. "I will try my best to stop them from getting you, you run to the nearest phone booth and call this number and say you're calling on behalf of me and say that we're in danger, ok?" Lee Hom looked up. He led her to the window and pointed at a dimly lit phone booth in the distance. "There's one there, run there as fast as possible and make that phone call, then hide somewhere safe but not far away from here." Lee Hom held Hebe's hand. "Are you ready?"
"But you..." Hebe looked into his eyes.
"Don't worry about me, I'll be fine." Lee Hom leaned forward and gave her a kiss.

Lee Hom and Hebe stepped out of the motel's entrance. They were immediately surrounded by Old Wang's men. The men received orders from Old Wang, who was sitting inside one of the cars, and started walking closer and closer towards them. Lee Hom whispered into Hebe's ears.

"Remember what I told you. Start running at the count of 3." Lee Hom stood in front of Hebe. "1..." Hebe looked at Lee Hom, her heart was beating so hard she felt like it was going to jump out of her mouth. "2..." She clutched her fingers in a tight knuckle and took a deep breath. "3!" Lee Hom dashed forward and punched a few of the men. Hebe ran through the men and ducked out of their way as Lee Hom covered for her. Hebe ran out of the motel's entrance as fast as her legs could carry her. She could not help but to turn around and look at Lee Hom. She turned just in time to see a few men kicked Lee Hom from behind. He winced in pain and fell to his knees. Lee Hom! Her legs stopped immediately. Two other men were running towards her. Lee Hom's words rang into her mind. Run there as fast as possible and make the phone call! Make the phone call! This was the only chance she've got.

Hebe turned and started running for her life. The phone booth was in front of her, but she felt like she was running forever. Scenes of Lee Hom as he fell to the ground kept flashing in her mind. Hebe remembered Old Wang's words.

"Fine with me, but I have to remind you that I can assure your safety, but I can't assure the lives of your closed ones."

NO! Lee Hom! They will kill him! It was all her fault! She had caused all these to happen to Lee Hom. He will die if she didn't go back. She cannot let him die. No, they can't kill him! Without any warning, Hebe made a U-turn and dashed back towards the motel. That's it. She had made up her mind, it's her that they want, not Lee Hom. No way was she going to allow them to hurt Lee Hom, afterall, he was innocent, he just wanted to protect her. And if he'd lost his life trying to protect her, she would not forgive herself forever.

Hebe ran towards the two men chasing after her. They caught her and dragged her back to the motel.

"Lee Hom! Stop hurting him! Stop it!" Hebe struggled and kicked her legs in the air frantically as the two men lifted her off the ground to stop her from running. Tears were rolling uncontrollably down her cheeks as she registered the scene in front of her.

Lee Hom wasn't defending himself, he didn't have the strength to do that anymore. All he could do was kneel on the ground and take their punches and kicks. The blood oozing out of his wounds were blurring his vision. He could no longer see what was in front of him. He could hear Hebe's voice but he couldn't find her anywhere. Run, Hebe! I told you to run! Why did you come back! Lee Hom screamed in his mind.

Hebe watched helplessly as the men continued attacking Lee Hom.

"Stop it! Please! I'm begging you! Stop hitting him! I'll go with you! I promise! I will marry your son! Just...stop hitting him..." Hebe screamed desperately and broke into sobs. The men finally stopped their actions. The two men who was holding onto Hebe also released their grips and she fell to the ground. She summoned all her strength and staggered towards Lee Hom.

"I'm sorry..." Hebe hugged him. "This is all my fault..I'm sorry..."
"Dd...don't..ll..leave.." Lee Hom tried his best to get the words out of his mouth. He couldn't see her properly but he knew she was near, he could smell the familiar fragrant of her hair, he could still feel her touch on his skin.
"Whatever happens. Remember that I'll always love you." Hebe whispered into his ears before she was being pulled away.

The men tried in vain to push her into the car.

"I don't wanna share the car with him." Hebe muttered under her breath. Old Wang narrowed his eyes.
"Fine. You'll take the other car. Zax, follow her, make sure she doesn't do anything funny." Old Wang ordered.

Zax got out of the car and looked at Hebe.

"I said you'll never be able to run away forever. Don't say I didn't give you a chance." Zax turned and climbed into the next car. Hebe took one last look at Lee Hom as he laid on the ground before she climbed into the car. As soon as their car sped off onto the roads, a gun shot was heard. Hebe sat up abruptly, she turned around and looked out of the back window.

One of their men was standing out of the open roof of the car behind them. Smoke was still coming out of the gun he was holding in his hand. It wasn't hard to guess what he had just done.

"Lee Hom!" Hebe shouted as she tried to pull at the handle of the door but was pulled back by Zax. "Let me go! Why did you do it? Why did you kill him? You're liars!! You're ALL liars!" Zax held her arms tightly from behind to stop her from struggling. Hebe felt her arms getting weaker and weaker and her vision started getting fuzzy. Her surroundings started to look like a whirlwind as she blacked out in the car.
