Chapter 7

The Deal

Taipei, Taiwan
----------------

Hebe battled her eyelids at the white ceiling. Where was she? She tried to recall everything that happened. Images started flashing through her mind. These scenes, although just a memory, still sent chills down her spine. She was shot! Yes! She focused her fuzzy vision onto the ceiling again. Is she in heaven already? Is she dead? She jolted up from the pillow, the sudden action resulted in the throbbing pain in her head. She hugged her head and winced in pain.

"Be careful! You've just had a few stitches, don't let the wound bleed again." JR. said to her, he was standing at the foot of the bed. Beside him was Lee Hom. Hebe blinked at the two men.

"Where am I? What happened? Wasn't I shot in the head? Why am I still alive?"
"If you really got shot in the head, you wouldn't be here talking to us now..." Lee Hom folded his arms.
"You're back at the mansion. And, yes, you did injure your head, but the bullet didn't went into your head. It brushed past and slashed your skin. It was a close shave. Just millimetres more, you would've died." JR. answered her questions seriously and frowned.
"I think I remember now...yes! It's all his fault!" Hebe pointed a trembling finger at Lee Hom. "The target was him..." Hebe started getting a little agitated and started blaming Lee Hom for her injury. She still haven't recovered from the shock yet. "I almost died because of you!" The 3 of them fell into an awkward silence. Hebe turned away and cleared her throat. "Have you found the culprit behind this?" She directed her question to JR. He shook his head.
"Unfortunately, no. We're not even sure which one of you is their target." JR. said to Lee Hom and Hebe.
"How can it be me? I don't have any enemies at all..." Hebe glared at Lee Hom.
"But you have the jade, remember? They might be after the jade." Lee Hom reminded.
"Jade? But no one knows I have it-"
"You accomplices might think that you've been held hostage by us and you might reveal their whereabouts to us, that's why they want to silence you?" Lee Hom interrupted her.
"Excuse me? Till now you stil lthink I stole your jade? Do I look like a thief to you?" Hebe turned to JR. "I'm sure the assasin's target is him, definitely. Given his present status, everyone will be after his life. Whereas I'm just an ordinary civilian, no one will want to kill me. Besides, if it's like what he said, they are after the jade, killing me doesn't guarantee they'll get the jade at all, because the jade will still be in your hands, right?" Hebe caught her breathe and waited for their reaction. JR. nodded slowly.
"Your analysis makes sense, but who will hire killers who miss their targets?" Lee Hom questioned.
"Maybe he's just trying to scare us?Maybe he's trying to challenge you?" Hebe suggested. This sounds just like it's lifted straight out of one of her authors' script.

"Whatever it is, unless they take action again, or we will never have any way to find out who they are, and what are they after. For now, we have to be more alert and aware of our surroundings. We'll need more people around to protect you and Miss Lin." JR. explained to Lee Hom.
"Me too?! Why?" Hebe pointed at herself.
"Of course, it's better not to take anymore risks..." Lee Hom said,I wouldn't want to owe you any more favours if you're hurt because of me again, he added silently. "That aside, we need to get the jade back, it will only be safe with us again...since you still refuse to give it back to me..." Lee Hom placed his hands into his pocket and turned his back against Hebe. "State your price. Afterall, the reason you're still holding on to the jade is because you want to get something more from us, right? How much do you-"
"SHUT UP!" Hebe cut him off. He looked at her reflection through a huge mirror in front of him. Hebe was fuming at the ears. "You think I refuse to return the jade because I want to get some benefits from you? Don't think that because you are rich you can look down on me. Yes, I'm not as rich as you, but so what? Actually, I'd already decided to return the jade to you, but now, I think I changed my mind." Hebe ignored the throbbing pain in her head. Lee Hom held his breathe and exchanged glances with JR. Finally, after a long silence, Lee Hom cleared his throat uneasily and turned back to face her.
"Ok...I'm sorry...What do you want?" Lee Hom's face turned a pale shade of pink. JR. observed him in amusement. He wasn't sure he'd heard correctly. Sorry? Lee Hom apologising? He had known Lee Hom since they were born, and he'd never heard Lee Hom apologising to anyone before except his elders. JR. had a feeling something interesting is going to happen soon.
"What do you want before you can give the jade back to me?" Lee Hom asked again when he did not get any reply from Hebe. "I can return you a favour if you let me have the jade back." He was almost on his knees.
"Is the jade really so important to you?" Hebe started feeling guilty. "Any favour?"
"If it's within my means, I will do it..." Lee Hom saw the look on Hebe's face. "Of course, anything... legal.." Hebe thought for a moment and caught her gaze in the mirror. What an ugly bandage, she complained in her mind. Will there be an ugly scar on her face after that?
"This wound is going to leave a scar on my face. Remember the time I save you?" She pointed to her bandage, then to her nose.
"And so..." Lee Hom could almost guessed what she was up to. "But it's not that obvious..." Lee Hom looked at her face. "I suppose you want me to give you a makeover?..." Lee Hom tried to control his laughter.
"Is it funny?" Hebe glared at Lee Hom."Of course, you can choose not to do it..." Hebe turned and started to walk away.
"Hey, wait a minute! If I do that, are you going to return me the jade?" Hebe stopped and turned to look at Lee Hom but didn't answer. "Fine, it's a deal." Lee Hom stepped forward and held out his hand.
"Deal!" Hebe shook his hand.
"But I don't want to waste too much time on this. So you have to accomodate with me. 3 weeks. You're to stay here and recover fully from your injury, I'll fulfil your request, you return me the jade, and the deal's over."
"Stay here? I can't even go home? Then what about my job? I have to work!" Hebe was beginning to regret making the silly deal.
"What if you're planning to run away again if I let you off? About your job, it's not a problem at all. I believe it would not be difficult for me to get your sup to let you off for 3 weeks?"

Hebe recalled that afternoon at the office. Right, his mother is the company's biggest shareholder. In other words, Lee Hom was her boss.

Hebe sighed. It's too late to go back on her word now.
