Chapter 12

The End...

Michelle having taken the first morning ride to Tin Seung, reaches to the cabin, but finds neither Raymond nor Rain to be in sight. Just then a middle-aged woman approaches her.

“Miss, are you looking for the young couple that vacations here?” the woman asked.

Michelle, discomforted, “Yes,” she acknowledges, “Do you happen to know where they are?”

“Yes, I just saw them leaving this morning,” the woman answers, then recalls, taking something out of her pocket. “The young lady dropped this as she left, and didn’t respond when I called to her,” the woman explains, handing a piece of paper to Michelle.

“Thanks,” Michelle replies, opening the piece of paper, and reading the words “Lee Pui Lien,” as she slowly realizes where they were.

As the bouquet of white lilies were placed in front of the tombstone, Ko Hung slowly steps back, looking deeply into his wife’s picture, reading “Beloved Wife Lee Pui Lien”. Before he had the chance to speak out, he was caught off guard.

“Dad,” Rain calls out, as she quickly ran towards Ko Hung, with Raymond trailing behind her.

Ko Hung, upon seeing them turns the other way and prepares to leave.

“Dad, don’t leave again,” Rain says, finally approaching him, “Don’t leave what has happened, face it.”

Ko Hung stops in his tracks, and slowly turns to face Rain.

Rain, holding back her teary-eyes, “Why? You promised me that you’ll never leave, why did you lie to me?”

“Rain,” Ko Hung tries to explain, as he takes her hand, but before he could, he notices a group of police heading towards them, as he dropped her hand and quickly left.

Mark, being first to approach them, continues to run after Ko Hung, pushing past Rain and Raymond. As he got close enough to Ko Hung, he quickly jumped him, pinning Ko Hung down, as the two got into a struggle.

By the time Rain and Raymond reached Ko Hung and Mark, Michelle and the rest of the group had caught up with them.

“Dad, stop,” Rain calls out, as Mark and him were still in the struggle.

But soon, Ko Hung manages to push Mark off distance, as he quickly reached in his jacket and pulled out a gun.

Mark, reacting fast, runs up to Ko Hung and tries to pry the gun from Ko Hung’s hands. As the one on one struggle continued to ensue, the trigger is incidentally pulled, as a gun fired towards Rain.

Raymond, out of reaction, quickly pushes Rain out of the way, as she pulls out of shock, now in sudden fear for his safety. Raymond, preparing to be the victim, is horrified as he sees Michelle come in front and take the bullet for him, falling straight into his arms.

“How is she Doctor,” Raymond eagerly asks, as the doctor came out from the emergency room.

The doctor could not help but sigh, “The bullet has been taken out, but she is in critical condition right now, whether or not she can pull through this one, depends on whether or not she can make the night.”

Rain, sitting quietly in the jail cell visiting room, as she kept deep in thought. As soon as she heard the door to the cell open, she quickly looks up, seeing as Ko Hung approach her and seat himself directly across from her.

Knowing that Rain did not know what to say, Ko Hung initiates, “I’m sorry Rain,” he apologizes, “I shouldn’t have burdened you with what I have done.”

Raymond slowly walks into the room, as he looks at her weak body lying in the bed, closing the door behind him as he gently walks towards her.

As he quietly sat down next to her bed, he gradually took her hand into his, “Hey Michelle,” he softly spoke to her. “Sorry,” he apologizes, “I shouldn’t have let you taken that bullet, I should have reacted faster,” he began, taking in all the guilt, “I-,” but before he could continue, he felt Michelle’s hand weakly squeeze his, as he looks up.

Michelle, though weak, but is still conscious, hears Raymond’s words.

Seeing that Michelle was conscious and wanted to speak, he quickly, yet gently takes the respirator off.

“No, it’s not your fault,” Rain comforts, “but Rain Lee is your daughter. I’ll be there for you no matter what happens.”

Ko Hung, touched, “I know I have put your relationship with Raymond Lam to an end now…”

“No,” Rain says, convincing herself, “the relationship did not start nor end. It just never was.”

“Raymond, I really… really love you… and I want you to always remember me,” Michelle expresses, so weak, her words are barely heard.

Raymond, worried, and unable to do anything, “Michelle…”

“When I was younger… I have always wanted to be a bride… to be able to walk down the wedding aisle,” Michelle, words slowing down even more so, “with the one man I love…”

“It will happen,” Raymond says, “we’ll pull through this together.” As he gently add pressure to her hand. “Michelle, will you marry me?”

Michelle was speechless, yet overwhelmed that she could only weakly smile and nod.

Knocking gently, before entering, Rain steps into the patient’s room, carrying a bouquet of purple irises in hand.

Michelle, though weak physically, but recovering after three days, was sitting up in her bed and looks up from a magazine, surprised to see Rain, rather than the expected Raymond.

“Hi Michelle, how are you doing?” Rain asks, as she walks up to Michelle.

Michelle, giving an awkward smile, “Much better, thanks.”

Rain, already beginning to put the flowers into a vase by the windowsill, “I’m sorry for causing you to be here,” she accepts her father’s fault.

“No, it’s not your fault,” Michelle assures, then adds, “I should actually be thanking you.”

Rain confused looks over at Michelle.

“Raymond proposed to me,” Michelle explains, looking straight at Rain for her reaction.

Rain, taking it in deep for a brief moment, brushes it off casually, and smiles, “Congratulations.”

“You know that Raymond loves you,” Michelle openly confronts. “You have to go through all matters to get what you want. If you were to want to reunite with Raymond…”

“If I have to forcefully take something to get it, then I would rather not have it,” Rain responds. “Raymond and I may have shared a moment,” Rain admits, “but the moment has now passed and no longer will continue.”

“Which is why you will always lose,” Michelle urges Rain, wanting to know that she was with Raymond rightfully, “You aren’t forcefully taking anything, you are just getting what you feel you deserve.”

“Then I don’t deserve him,” Rain answers, “If he really loves me, then he always will, and if he doesn’t, then I will not want him to stay with me and have his heart stray away.” Walking up to Michelle’s bed, Rain slowly sat down by her, and takes Michelle’s hand in hers, “If Raymond had absolutely no feelings for you, then he would not have proposed. Michelle, have faith in yourself, have faith in Raymond.”

Before Michelle could respond, Raymond walks into the room, not noticing the two until he turned the corner of the entrance and looks around to see Rain with Michelle.

As they stood outside the hospital building, alone, surrounded by trees and the stone path, Raymond looks up to Rain, whom was standing directly across from him, in close distance. “Rain, I’m sorry.”

Rain, forcing a smile, “Don’t be. There has been too many apologies these past three days, I think it’s enough.” Trying to lighten the mood, “I should be congratulating you and Michelle,” she manages, but could not look Raymond in the eye.

Raymond, in pain for having Rain find out, not by him, finally lets his emotions through, looking up at her, “I promised to love you forever and for always, and from beginning ‘til the end, I have never broken that promise.”

Rain looking down at the stony path, “And yet, you have somehow managed to have broken my heart.”

Raymond, taking a step forward towards her, “Rain…”

Rain, quickly backing a couple steps away, “Raymond, I know whom your feelings are to, and that’s all that matters,” she tells him, keeping her distance and feelings away. “I told Michelle that if I have to forcefully take something to have it, then I would rather not have it at all. She has done so much for you, and at this time, she needs you most,” Rain explains understandingly. Holding back the tears that she felt she could hold no longer hold, “I love you, from the very bottom of my heart, but two woman cannot share one man.”

Raymond, unable to hold himself back, walks up to Rain, and hugs her, tightly, “Rain…” He could not manage any words, but knew that he wanted to hold her, to hold forever and never let go.

Rain, restraining the tears, slowly pulls herself away from him. “Bye Raymond,” she finalizes, as Raymond held her hands loosely in his. Looking to him once more as he did her, and holding that picture of him in her mind, Rain unwillingly took her hands from his and turns away, walking down the stony path, never turning back.
