Chapter Four

“Wah!!!!”

“If you scream anymore, people are going to think you’re crazy,” Raymond teases as he walks up to Rain.

“I don’t care,” Rain said a-matter-of-fact, “It’s so beautiful and refreshing here. I can’t believe I have never actually been on a ferry before?! Look at the beautiful waters and fresh air, everything is so relaxing.”

“If you’ve never been on a ferry before, then you haven’t been anywhere have you?”

“Of course not, I have been to…”

“Where? Satin or Kowloon?” Raymond teasingly mocks, “To go anywhere out of town, you would have to take a ferry, unless you’re trying to tell me that you take a plane everywhere you go, but I don’t think you can afford many plane tickets, unless of course, your dad is billionaire, Ko Hung. But then you wouldn’t have to work.”

“Maybe,” Rain answers, smiling mischievously. “Hey, so you’re sure Michelle doesn’t mind you going to the cabin with us?”

“Nope. Besides, she has too much to work on to worry about me,” Raymond explains.

“Oh please, you should learn to be a better boyfriend,” Rain sighs as she leans on the guardrail.

“What?! What am I doing wrong? It’s not like I’m cheating on her or anything.”

“And you still don’t know what you’re doing wrong?! As a boyfriend, you should be by her side when she is most stressed,” Rain explains, “’Cause that’s when she’s going to need the most cheering up or to just know that you will be by her side at all times.”

“Well, how am I to know these things,” Raymond reasons, “She didn’t tell me or anything.”

“Omigosh, you actually expected her to tell you too,” bewilders Rain, “These things are unsaid, but to be done you know.”

“Well…”

“If it wasn’t for me, you and Michelle would never have gotten together you know,” Rain mocks, “And I’m not sure if it was a good thing or not.”

“That’s true."

“Patrick?! Didn’t you ever learn not to eavesdrop on someone’s conversation,” Rain scolded.

“Well, I thought you guys were talking about me, so I was just going to defend myself,” Patrick reasoned, “How am I to know that you guys were talking about dear Raymond and his lack of concern for his girlfriend.”

“What are you talking about,” Raymond hints him to shut up.

“Well, you guys have your little chat time, I’m gonna go get my camera ready, so I can take some pictures for my dad to see,” Rain calls back, as she goes inside the ferry with Raymond acknowledging her departure.

“She already left and you’re still looking,” Patrick comments to Raymond, who was still looking in the direction of where Rain was.

“What are you talking about,” Raymond expresses, trying to make nothing of the situation.

Patrick sighs, “You know, I really don’t understand. If you liked Rain, then why did you end up going out with Michelle? I mean, it’s so obvious you like…”

“Yeah, well, it’s not obvious enough for her,” Raymond signals in Rain’s direction.

“Yeah, she’s always looking out for everybody, that she overlooks herself,” Patrick replies knowingly. “I bet you she doesn’t even realize that Alex likes her, and they’ve been childhood friends since forever.”

“Yeah, but she treats him as an older brother...”

“Oh please, your just saying that to comfort yourself,” Patrick reveals, “But if you like Rain, then why string Michelle along?”

“I’m not stringing her along,” Raymond defends, “I really thought that we could try a relationship…”

“And…”

“… I don’t know,” Raymond, reveals, “When I’m with Rain, I always feel so relaxed and just enjoy life as it is. Everything just feels so carefree,” he smiles at the thought.

“And when you’re with Michelle?”

“When I’m with Michelle, I just feel pressured. It’s like I have to be up to a certain standard, like if I don’t live up to this expectation, our relationship will fall apart.”

“So, you’re pretending to like her?”

“No, of course not. Michelle is such a great girlfriend. She cares and worries for me, but…”

“But Rain makes you happy,” Patrick answers for Raymond.

Before Raymond could answer…

“What are you guys talking about,” Rain shows up with her camera, “You guys look so serious. But then again, nothing can be that serious with Patrick around," she teases.

Patrick, offended, “I hope you know, I can carry a very serious topic, and as a matter of fact, we were just talking about…”

“Where to go when we arrive,” Raymond cuts him off.

Rain laughs, “Yeah, that’s seems about the type of conversation Patrick could carry.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Patrick gave up.

“Hey, let’s take some pictures,” Rain said, forgetting about the subject.

“On the ferry,” Raymond surprised.

“Sure, why not, it has such a nice scenic background for the pictures,” Rain explains, “Now come on, before the ferry ports.”

“That’s okay, I don’t want to get laughed at,” Patrick openly says, as he slips away, “Why I don’t I help you and Raymond take a picture.”

“Hmm…” Rain thinks, then smiles, “Okay, that would work too.”

So Rain and Patrick switch places, with Patrick taking the photographer position, as Rain goes and joins Raymond, whom stood awkwardly as Rain stands closely next to him.

As Patrick was about to take the picture, he pauses and looks up, “Hey Raymond, will you stop looking so awkward, this is just a picture, don’t look like it’s prison.”

Right then, Rain takes Raymond by the arm, “Be more natural, that way, you’ll look even better than you already do,” she tells him, as she looks to him teasingly.

Raymond then smiles at her, “Just like you, right!” as he taps her on the nose.

And just then, they both miss as the camera flashes at the corner of their eyes.

“Hey, we weren’t ready!” Rain complains.

“Well, we can’t be here all day,” Patrick complains in return, “Besides, you’re always most natural when you’re not posing for the camera. Didn’t anyone ever tell you that?”

“No, so I demand a retake,” Rain demanded.

“Too late, the ferry is going to port,” Patrick informs.

“Where are we going to go first?!” Rain excitedly exits the port with Raymond and Patrick following right behind. “Let’s go eat, I’m hungry.”

“Well at least let us drop off the bags,” Patrick complains, sluggishly lugging his knapsack. "Just because Raymond is carrying yours, it doesn’t mean the rest of us aren’t tired.”

“Oh yeah, hehe…” remembers Rain, “Here, let me get that,” as she reaches for her bag.

“That’s all right, it’s not heavy,” Raymond explains.

“No, I wouldn’t want Patrick to get all jealous you know,” Rain mocks Patrick, then turns to Raymond and smiles, “I can carry it, really.”

Raymond smiles as he hands her the bag, then to Patrick, “So, we’re going to your uncle’s first?”

“Yeah, just to know where it is,” Patrick suggests.

_____________________

“Wah… this place is so nice and roomy,” Rain mazes. “And it’s so convenient to have a barbecue in the front. I love this place!” she calls out as she plops onto the couch.

“Of course,” Patrick brags, “Otherwise, I wouldn’t have invited you guys. Hey, Raymond and I will be sharing the room on the end of the right of the hall, and you can have the room on the left at the end of the hall.”

“Okey dokes,” Rain acknowledges, “Hey, what are we going to do now?” she asks, jumping to her feet.

“You still want to go somewhere?!” bewilders Patrick. “I’m so tired right now, I think we should leave the sight-seeing ‘til tomorrow. Besides I have to go and phone my uncle that we arrived, and tell the security man that we will be staying here for the next two days.”

“Okay,” pouted Rain, “If you’re going to be doing that, then Raymond and I will start buying groceries for the next two days. We should have a hot pot tonight, and a barbecue tomorrow night, and…”

“Hey, hey, hey,” Patrick cuts her off, “Don’t forget we’re only staying her for three days, two nights, and not for three weeks. Don’t start buying the house full, besides, my uncle already bought some food for us."

“Okay, okay,” Rain obeyed, “We would still have to refill the food later anyway, it’s courtesy, especially since your uncle was nice enough to lend us this place.”

“Rain’s right,” Raymond agrees, “So we’ll get the groceries, while you work out the calls and accommodation matters.”

_____________________

“Hmm... what should we get for tonight?” Rain looks around the supermarket, as she checks around the aisle with one hand, and has her other arm around Raymond’s arm.

Raymond, feeling awkward, but happier than anything else, “It doesn’t matter, I’ll end up eating whatever you make.”

“Why do you keep smiling to yourself,” Rain finally notices.

“What are you talking about?” Raymond pretends to be clueless, “You’re probably just imagining it.”

“I don’t just imagine things,” Rain retorted, though doubting herself at the same time.

She then shrugs it off, as she finally stopped at an aisle and picked up some groceries. As she lets go of her arm away from Raymond’s, Raymond disappointed, continues to follow her towards the refrigerated aisle.

“You bought so much, I think this can last us a week,” Raymond comments to the bags of groceries he was carrying, as they were walking back to the cabin.

“Of course not,” Rain explains, “Besides, even if Patrick doesn’t finish it all, I’m sure you’ll help me finish it.”

“Yeah, of course,” Raymond mocks, “Right now, I’m so thirsty, and I can’t even get a drink.”

“Oh, well, why didn’t you tell me,” Rain forgetfully remembers, as she reaches into one of the grocery bags Raymond was carrying, and takes out a juice box. She then puts the straw in, “Here, since you were such a gentleman in helping me to carry the groceries, I’ll hold your juice box for you as you drink.”

Raymond grins as she held up the juice box to him, and as she too starts to drink from a juice box.

Just then, they see Patrick with an unknown woman, walking up towards them, so caught up in a conversation, that they didn’t even notice Raymond and Rain.

“Patrick,” Rain calls to them, as they approach the two.

Patrick then notices the call, “Oh hey, Raymond, Rain.”

“Hey,” Raymond greets.

“So who’s this friend you have here?” Rain cuts to the chase, then to the woman, “Hi, I’m Rain, this is Raymond,” acknowledges Raymond, “We’re friends of Patrick,” she explains.

The woman laughed at Rain’s direct personality, “Hi, I’m Marsha Yuen, an old friend of Patrick.”

“Nice to meet you Marsha,” Raymond acknowledges, more down toned than Rain.

“Yeah, Marsha and I met when I was here over a summer, and we lost contact, but we bumped into one another today,” Patrick explains.

“Oh,” Rain grasps, “Well why don’t you join Patrick, Raymond, and I for supper tonight. We’re having a hot pot,” she cheerfully explains.

“Oh, I forgot to mention that I won’t be home for supper tonight,” Patrick recalls, “I thought Marsha and I would go out, and catch up on the recent events.”

“Oh,” both Raymond and Rain catches the hint.

“That’s cool, more food for Raymond and me,” Rain gushes at the thought.

“Yeah, that’s what I thought,” Patrick thankfully replies.

“Hey, we gotta go now, since we don’t know where everything is in your kitchen,” Rain quickly responds to Patrick.

“Yeah, we better get going,” Raymond goes along.

“Hope we can get together some time,” Rain bids Marsha.

“Hi-llo, do you need help?” Rain pokes her head out the kitchen door.

Raymond smiles, “No, I’m almost done, the water is starting to boil, how about you? You’re done cutting all the food?”

“Of course, just one more thing and I’m all done,” she answers, as she disappears back into the kitchen.

Raymond gives everything as general check before he hears a scream.

“Aiyah!”

_____________________

“Rain! Are you okay,” Raymond comes quickly into the kitchen.

“Yeah, but I accidentally cut myself with the knife,” Rain explains, as she shows to him, her continually bleeding finger.

“Okay, just put it under the tap,” Raymond quickly instructs, as he turns on the tap, and runs out of the kitchen.

Rain, doing as she was told, kept her finger under the tap to wash out any bacteria. Not long after, Raymond comes rushing back in.

“Okay, I got a Band-Aid,” Raymond quickly tears it open, and helps to clean Rain’s finger, before putting it on. As Raymond consistently panicked, and kept asking Rain if she was all right, Rain only nodded, and as Raymond was done, he finally notices that Rain was silently smiling to herself. “What are you smiling about?”

“Nothing,” Rain replied, as she smiled, this time to Raymond.

_____________________

“That Patrick, I knew he wouldn’t come with us, now that he has Marsha,” Rain complains, as Raymond and her were walking alongside a beach.

“Well, at least he seems quite serious about this relationship, more than the rest he’s ever been in,” Raymond explains.

Just then, Rain sees a little boy and girl making a sandcastle, on the beach next to the shore. “Aww… look,” she regards to Raymond, “Aren’t they the world’s most adorable kids?!”

Raymond only smiles. Without warning, Rain grabs Raymond’s hand, and dragged him to the beach, to where the kids were. “Hi siu pung yau, are you making a sandcastle?” Rain asked the little kids.

“Yup,” replies the little girl, “But the castle keeps breaking.”

“Hmm…” Rain thinks, “Can Rain Jie Jie and Raymond Gor Gor help you make it?”

“Okay, but you have to make it very nice,” the little boy answers.

Rain then salutes him, “Yes Sir,” as she looks over at Raymond, who grins at the action.

As they built the sandcastle, the little boy and Raymond’s side kept falling, causing Rain to pout at Raymond, since the little girl and her side was just about done.

“Wah… it’s all done!” Rain calls out, as they all put on little flags on top of their towers.

“Thank you Jie Jie, Gor Gor,” the little kids said, as they each gave Raymond and Rain a big hug.

“Lui Lui, Jia Jia?!”

“Mommy!” the kids called to the woman who turned towards them, as they ran to her.

After the kids talked to their mother, she responds, “Well, we have to go now, why don’t you say bye to Jie Jie, Gor Gor.”

So the kids ran back to Raymond and Rain, and gave them one last hug, “Bye-bye Jie Jie, Gor Gor,” and with that, they left with their mom, as they waved back.

“Wah…” Rain calls out towards the ocean, as she stretches out and lies herself down onto the sand and closes her eyes.

Raymond smiles, as he too, does the same. He then turns over, and as he looks to Rain, who still has her eyes closed, he is kept to look deeply to her, “Rain…”

“Hmm…” Rain responds, as she looks over at him.

Just then, a beach-volleyball comes by, and gently taps Rain on the leg. She then gets up to pick up the ball.

“Hey.”

Rain turns to see the call, as Raymond gets up, disappointed that they were interrupted.

“Hi, this must be your ball,” Rain hands over the ball to the guy who was approaching them.

“Yeah, thanks,” the guy responds, “I’m Matt.”

“I’m Rain,” Rain introduces herself, “This is Raymond.”

“Hey, you guys want to join us for a game?” Matt offers.

Rain looks over to Raymond, and smiles. Raymond then smiles back, “Sure.”

So, they ended up spending half their day at the beach, playing beach-volleyball, and later singing to a bunch of random songs picked out by others, Raymond and Rain sitting side by side. After, Rain and a group of girls went over to the washroom, as Raymond and Matt went off to the side to chat.

“Hey, your girlfriend is one of a kind,” Matt comments.

_____________________

“You seem to have very caring boyfriend Rain.”

“Raymond? Oh, he’s not my boyfriend,” Rain explains, then grins, “Now what would cause you to think that Yee?”

_____________________

“Oh, she’s not my girlfriend,” Raymond explains.

“Really?” mazes Matt, “You guys seem pretty close.”

_____________________

“Are you sure? He seems to like you,” Yee comments.

“Don’t be silly,” Rain brushes it off, “He has a girlfriend already, and a very wonderful one at that.”

_____________________

“Yeah,” Raymond replies.

Just then the girls came towards them.

“Hey, you guys want to join us for a pit fire tonight?” Yee offers.

“Yeah, we can get to hang out more, since you guys are only here for one more night,” Matt informs.

“Sorry, but we are meeting with two other friends tonight,” Raymond explains.

“Yeah,” Rain disappoints, “But we could always meet you here after we meet with them, and we can bring them down here as well.”

“Yeah, so we’ll see you here tonight,” Yee confirms.

“Sure,” both Raymond and Rain reply.

_____________________

“Excuse me, I was just wondering how long it will be ‘til we reach the port?”

“We still have a few hours since we just left. Are you going to meet your boyfriend Miss?”

“How did you know?”

“Seeing you so nervous and excited about when we’re reaching to Tin Seung, I assume that you must be meeting someone special.”

Michelle smiles to the comment.

_____________________

“Argh… I am going to kill Patrick, what is taking him so long,” Rain frustrates, as Raymond and her sit by the barbecue in the front of the cabin, “We agreed to meet here at eight.”

“Maybe they’re just caught up in something,” Raymond tried to reason, just as his beeper goes off. After reading it, “Never mind, they won’t be coming. He said that they are going to see Marsha’s parents, since he hasn’t met them for so long.”

“And he calls now? He must have had supper before he called.”

“Well, what do you want to do now,” Raymond asks Rain. “Do you want to go down to the beach to meet Matt and Yee or stay here, since we already have everything all set up?”

“Let’s stay here,” Rain decides, “I’m too tired from waiting to go anywhere.”

“Okay, and we could go after if you decide you want to go,” Raymond suggests.

“Okay.”

_____________________

“Here.”

“Thanks Raymond,” Rain regards, as she takes her can of pop from him. She then lies back in her chair and sighs.

“What’s wrong?” Raymond asks, as he takes a sip from his pop.

“I can’t believe we have to go back tomorrow,” Rain explains to Raymond, as he too, lies back in his chair. “Everything was so great, I really love it here.”

Just then, Raymond sits up in his chair, and turns himself to Rain. Rain, noticing his sudden move, too gets up.
“Rain…” Raymond started.

Rain does not say anything, but waits for Raymond to continue.

“I…” Raymond starts again, “I really, really like you.”

Rain, who was caught off guard, was shocked. But most importantly, she was touched.

“I know that this is a shock to you, but I really wanted to tell you, before we go back tomorrow,” Raymond continues, “These past two days has been the world to me,” as he takes her hand into his. Rain though, did not take hers away, as her eyes shimmered, through the tears she formed. “Everything was just perfect. I was able to spend two days of my life with you, and treasured every moment, every second of it.”

“Raymond… I…” Rain starts, as she tries to find the words to her thoughts.

“I don’t want anything out of this, nor do I ask for your acceptance, but I just wanted to tell you how my heart felt, because I know that if I didn’t tonight, I never will.”

Rain, holding back her tears, looked at him, as he kept his head down, building up the courage he thought he had lost.

“Rain, I love you,” Raymond finally confesses, as he looked up into her eyes.

As their eyes met, Raymond slowly motions over to Rain, and as she gently closed her eyes, as he did his, and too motions towards him, their lips touched, as they softly kissed. As they slowly moved away from each other and opened their eyes, unknowingly, Michelle stands at the front gates.
