Chapter 7

She looks up to come face to face with him, but then quickly turns to notice who was standing right by. “Oh, hi Michelle, hey Raymond,” she greets cheerily, “I haven’t seen you guys since forever,” she muses.

“Yeah, Raymond and I haven’t seen you in a while,” Michelle quickly replies, smiling, but at the same time, conscientiously holding onto Raymond’s arm tighter.

“How have you been?” Raymond asks, giving a weak smile.

“Great,” Rain answers, in direct opposite of Raymond’s tone. “I’ve been helping my dad with his business, and it’s quite fun actually.”

“Everything seems to be a game to you,” as they all turn to see Alex approaching them. “Now give me that back,” Alex scolds, as he grabs the small package from Rain’s hand.

“Hey,” Rain protests, as she was unprepared, letting Alex easily get the package.

Michelle smiles, “If we didn’t know you guys were childhood friends, we’d think that you guys were going out, right Raymond,” she asks, looking over to see his reaction.

Raymond, at first dazed, then quickly answers, “Yeah.”

Rain smiles, “Hmm… well I never thought of it that way,” she says mischievously.

“So where are you guys heading?” asks Raymond, changing the subject.

“We were just planning to go out and eat,” Alex answers, “at the newly opened Orchids restaurant.”

Raymond replies, surprised, “That was where I was going to take Michelle.”

“Really?” both Rain and Michelle responds to Alex and Raymond.

“Why don’t we go together,” Alex suggests, turning to Rain as Raymond did to Michelle. “Is that all right?” they both asked.

“Of course,” both Rain and Michelle replies, then looks at each and smile.

“You’ve been looking at the menu for a long time now, would you like to order?” ask Alex, who addresses Rain.

“Yes, yes,” Rain replies, as she makes her order, then turns to Alex, “There are so many variety, it takes time you know.”

“Well, Raymond, Michelle, and I chose ours in less than half the time you took,” Alex informs.

“Rain is just trying to make the right choices,” Michelle sides with Rain.

“Exactly,” Rain retorts.

“Well, if you’re going to be so lippy, I’m not sure if I should give you your present, in case I spoil you even more,” Alex taunts.

“I have a present?!” asks Rain excited, then apologetically, “I’m sorry, may I have my present now?” she turns eager again.

“Well, since I already bought it,” Alex says, smiling as he gave her, her present.

Rain then quickly opens it, yet trying not to rip the shiny purple wrapping, as Raymond grins at the thought of the same situation happening to them.

“Now why is Miss Lee sitting at the dock all by herself?” he asks, as he seats himself next to her.

“Hey Raymond,” Rain greets, as she turns around and sees him. “Now why aren’t you with Michelle is the question,” she teases, looking out towards the ocean.

“Why are you always putting us together?” Raymond asks, disappointed, as he looks up at her.

Rain turns to him and smiles, “Now don’t tell that you don’t know that Michelle has a crush on you? I bet everyone knows.”

“You have no idea what everyone knows,” Raymond says under his breath.

“What?” asks Rain, as she looks closely at him.

“Nothing,” Raymond replies, as Rain looks at him unconvinced.

“Well, I did have something for a particular someone, but…” Raymond taunts.

“Me?!” Rain excites. “Aww… I’m sorry, no more teasing okay,” she salutes to him.

Raymond grins at the gesture, and then slowly takes a small package from behind them, and brings it out towards her.

“Oh my gosh, can I open it now?!” Rain asks excitedly as she takes the present from his hands.

“Of course,” Raymond says, smiling.

Rain then begins opening her present, though excited, yet opening it very slowly.

“Wah, you take that long to open a present?” Raymond muses.

“Of course not,” Rain responds, “ I just don’t want to ruin the pretty wrapping,” she replies, not looking up, as she continues to slowly unwrap the translucent wrapping paper filled with little cherry red lining designs of Pucca.

“Wow, it’s really pretty,” Raymond hears Michelle maze, as he turns to look at the gift from Alex, and only turns to find shock.

Rain, after opening the present, is shocked by the gift, as she looks up at Raymond, but before anyone was able to notice, she quickly turns to Alex. “Thanks Alex,” she says in gratitude, “I really like it,” she says, looking down at her gift, a thin, circular shaped silver necklace, that had half a broken heart held at the center of the necklace.

“Of course,” Michelle says a-matter-of-fact, then explains, “That’s the ‘Forever’ necklace, I heard it’s meant for couples. That is why there is only half a broken heart. One is given to the girl and the guy owns the other, and once you put them together, it makes a heart, representing that no matter what happens, love will stay true and pure, and that their love is forever-lasting.”

Rain and Alex slowly walks down the street, as Alex notices that Rain seems to be lost in thought. “How come you seem to have gotten a lot less talkative after lunch,” asks Alex, grinning, “This isn’t the Rain I know.”

Rain, continues to be caught in thought, but quickly pulls out, and stops.

Alex, seeing Rain’s abrupt stop, stops by her, “Are you all right?”

“Alex, I want to tell you something,” Rain manages to say.

“How come you seem quieter all of a sudden,” Michelle asks, as she holds onto Raymond’s arm with more securely as he walks her home down the street. “All you feeling all right?”

“Yeah,” Raymond answers, though not convincingly. “Just a bit tired I guess.”

“Are you sure?” Michelle asks, concerned, “You don’t have to walk me home, you should go home and get some rest.”

“No, I’ll be fine,” Raymond replies, giving her a reassuring smile.

Michelle looks at him, making sure he really was okay, then smiles, “Okay,” she says, leaning on his shoulders, as they walk. “Don’t you think what Alex did was romantic?” she suddenly asks.

Caught off guard, “I guess,” Raymond responds to the comment.

Michelle then distant herself from him.

Raymond, not knowing what he said wrong, “What? Did I say something wrong?”

“Well, you’ll have to think about it,” Michelle says, pouting. “You’re not a very romantic guy at all,” she then explains.

Raymond grins, “Is that all?” he asks, “I did take you to Orchids,” he defends.

“But Alex bought Rain the ‘Forever’ necklace,” Michelle retorts, but then notices his quick change of look, and stops short. “Do you still miss her?” she asks, afraid, yet wanting to know she looks towards the ground, waiting for his response.

Raymond looks at Michelle, “If I told you no, I’d be lying.” As he sees her disappointment, he takes her hands into his, to her surprise, as she looks up at him, “But I can also tell you that you, Michelle Yip, is Raymond Lam’s only girlfriend.”

Michelle looks intently at him, not knowing how to respond. Seeing his sincerity in his words, she leans over and kisses him. Raymond too, returns the kiss.
