“Can we go now?” He whined for approximately the seventh time in the past hour. I sighed and closed the Science textbook I held in my hands shut as I turned towards him and glared him down.
“Jung Yun Ho, by right we’re supposed to have another hour of studying and you’ve already whined seven times. Do I have to go through another seven or are you going to shut up?”
He added a pout to his request and I just rolled my eyes.
“Please Jae Joong?”
“Oh so now I have to go through it another eight times?” I raised an eyebrow and he sank back into his chair.
“Pretty please?”
“Jung Yun Ho, it is not my fault we have to continue with this lesson. Blame your father. If it wasn’t for him dragging you away, we would be on your so called date by now.” I stated and flipped the book open again.
“Yes but that technically wasn’t my fault! He DRAGGED me away!” He emphasized the ‘dragged’. I rolled my eyes and rested my cheek against my open palm. “And who did he drag away again may I ask?”
“Me?”
“And was it also you who disappeared for an hour?”
“… Yes?”
“And is it also appropriate for me to continue with this lesson because an hour of you studying was lost?”
“No!”
“Wrong. Yes.”
“Jae Joong…” He started his whining his whining spree again and I pursed my lips. “Yun Ho…” I said threateningly.
He slumped back into his chair, a sign of defeat.
“Okay okay fine let’s just get this lesson over and done with!” He said frustratedly. I don’t suppose he has ever had to give into anyone before.
For a second there, he DID look kinda cute. Just a little. No over 0.1%.
“Where do you intend to go?” I said casually after slightly over ten seconds of strained silence.
He sat up straight immediately and his eyes seemed to sparkle.
“So you’re letting me go on a date with you now?” Stupid person who loves jumping to conclusions.
“No. I just want to know where’re you’re going to take me. Can’t be too careful you know.”
“You don’t trust me do you?!” He yelled and added a pout, again. Yet again.
“No I don’t now tell me where you’re going to take me.”
He rolled his eyes and tapped his fingers against the polished wood.
“There’s a nice restaurant nearby and oh I don’t know, take a nice stroll along the beach? You watch sappy romantic movies. You do the Math.”
Okay I foresee no danger in those events! Just maybe in the strolling part. The beach can be kinda deserted at night.
… Okay fine maybe I am being paranoid.
“Seems rather strangely innocently safe to me.” I concluded and closed the book again, hoping I wouldn’t have to open it again. The page I had to open to was 257, the middle of the book with 543 pages.
Stupid man.
“I told you!”
“Which is very suspicious.”
“I’m not a pervert Jae Joong.” He said, lips pursed.
“I’m sure you’re not.” I replied sarcastically.
I threw the stupid book into my book bag and stood up and headed towards the door.
“If you’re not coming Jung, we can always cancel. Not that’d it would affect me in any way—“
He was already next to me.
“Though.”
“I’m ready I’m ready! Let’s go go go!” And ran past me, down the stairs and out the door, causing all heads to turn towards his direction and stop and stare.
I could swear they were all thinking, ‘Did someone die?’
“Idiot.” But I smiled anyway. Stupid Jung.
And walked in a much S-L-O-W-E-R pace after him.
He sat comfortably in his black Lamborghini, waiting for me. Oh so it’s black today huh?
“That’s fast.” I said and hopped in. He grinned and roared the engine to life. I looked at the clock which read 5.
“Do you think I could just hop and buy some food for Jun Su and Chang Min? I don’t want them to starve because of this date.”
“You sound as if this date’s a bad thing.”
“It is.” He turned to look at me, slightly hurt by what I said but I hadn’t finished.
“Not all that bad.” And he turned back to look at the road, a smile evident on his face.
“So can I?” I repeated my question since I received no answer.
“Oh sure why not? I’m sure Jun Su will have a lovely time shooting me death glares.” I chuckled at his comment. “Death glares it is then.”
He dropped me off at a nearby roadside stall and I hopped off. Scanning the menu, I decided what to buy in a flash.
“One bowl of Haemul Japchae without the vegetables and an order of ddeokboggi with ramen and a side order of kimchi dumplings please.” The woman nodded and began preparing the food.
“Takeaway.” I didn’t forget to add.
“You sure do care a lot for your siblings huh?” Yun Ho commented from behind me as he observed the ahjumma cook.
“Of course I do.” I felt my facial expression soften at the mention of my two darling younger brothers.
He didn’t request for me to say anything but I continued my explanation anyway. He didn’t know my life story so I might as well tell him.
“My parents died in a car accident when I was six leaving me with two younger brothers to look after.” After so many years and after the comfort session given by Yun Ho, I had learnt to accept the fact that my parents were gone so it wasn’t a really touchy subject anymore.
“They died because… because they swerved the car so that all the impact would be on them and we’d be safe. They crashed into the wall and… died practically on the spot.”
His mouth formed an ‘o’ shape and I took it as a cue to continue.
“My aunt took us in.” Now here was the touchy part.
“She placed all the blame of her beloved sister’s death on us. She was abusive and cruel. Throwing things around and hitting and beating and scolding us for no reason was a normal occurrence.”
I took a deep breath and continued.
“I had never been the strong or defensive type so the only way I could prevent Jun Su and Chang Min from getting hurt was to take all the blame upon myself.”
Why I told him so much, I do not know. Maybe it was because I loved him and opened up to him. But I do know this. I had never been so comfortable with anyone in my life ever before.
“One day she just went berserk and ran around the house with a chopper. She accidentally slashed me.” I lifted up my shirt by just a little to show him the beginning of the long, deep scar which I doubt will ever go away.
“She passed away soon after and our grandparents took us in. They were much better people. Kind and caring but there was nothing much they could do. They were poor you see.”
“We moved out when I was fifteen and rented a room just big enough for us to stay in. That’s when I started working to support them.”
I breathed in again after the long narration of my long life story.
“I… I didn’t know at all.” Was all he could say.
“Course you didn’t! I didn’t tell you Sherlock.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Why would I have told you? You were the person I hated the most remember?”
“Good point there. But if you had told me, the teasing wouldn’t have been that bad.”
“Now you realize how bad it was?”
“Yeah I do.” I grinned, “Good to know it’ll never happen again.”
“How do you know that?” He said teasingly, mockery very much present in his voice. “Tease me again and see if I’ll ever speak to you again.” I said firmly but all he did was smile.
“Like I’d ever tease you again! I love you too much to do so.” I nearly puked.
“Don’t say that Yun Ho…” I started but he just cut me off by quickly placing a quick kiss on my lips before looking away innocently.
“Yah Jung Yun Ho!” I hissed under my breath, not wanting to draw any attention to us just in case he did something else other than kiss me.
“What?” He looked at me, eyes big and kiddish. God he’s an idiot.
“Nothing…” I muttered, not able to find anymore words to describe him.
“Your order.” The ahjumma’s voice came from behind me and I turned around and took the bag from her and smiled sweetly. “Thanks.”
“Let’s go.” My voice changed immediately when the sentence was directed to him. “Ouch Jae that hurt. You could have said it nicer and sweeter right? Like ‘Baby let’s go’ or ‘I don’t want to make you wait so long darling. Let’s go.” I glared at him and walked away.
“Come on IDIOT let’s go.” From the corner of my eye, he was clearly sulking and I smiled to myself. “Mission completed!”
He got into the car and the annoying frown never left his face.
“Yun Ho…” I called out softly but all I got was a muffled ‘hmm’?
“Yun Ho?”
“What?” He answered back, irritated.
“Are you angry?” He pulled up at the red light.
“No I’m not.” He said lamely.
“Yes you are.” I grabbed his hand and stroked the back of it tenderly and lovingly. I played absent-mindedly with his long slim and lanky fingers. “Don’t be angry okay?” I brought the hand to my lips and let them linger on the smooth surface of his hand.
Seeing that he was still not in a very good mood, I breathed in deep and leaned over before kissing him quickly to get this over with.
Okay that was just an excuse.
I liked kissing him okay?!
“Still angry?”
“No.” Came his one-worded reply. I grinned, “Good.”
For the rest of the journey back home, our hands remained connected. And I liked that feeling. A lot.
