Chapter 14

The truth about Yun Ho.

-JAE JOONG’S POV-

I liked Yun Ho coming over to my home. It felt really nice. Like husband and wife coming home after a hard day’s work. Eww that was mushy but I liked it. It was nice.

“What are you thinking about?” He suddenly asked me out of the blue, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Huh?”

“What are you thinking about? You actually look serious for once!” He said casually, earning a hard slap on his arm. When will this man learn to keep his big mouth shut?! Gosh. But it was as if he was pyschic. Knowing exactly when to ask me what I was thinking about, when that thing was him himself.

“Nothing. Just thinking about your incredibly low IQ level.” I said, amusement painted all over. He smiled slighly and repeated his question. “What are you thinking about Jae Joong?”

Boy this man was sharp.

I gave him a slight smile before continuing, half willingly.

“Just thinking that, being like this, you know going to a house together, makes us feel like husband and wife.” I expected a rather positive comment from him but all he did was bite his bottom lip and remain silent. Did I say anything to offend him in anyway? I didn’t really think so.

I looked at him from the corner of my eye, brows furrowed by his weird behaviour. What’s up with him?

“Yun Ho? What’s wrong? Did I say something wrong?” My suspicions were confirmed when his hand held by my own tensed up.

“Huh? Oh no you didn’t. I just… I just thought of… oh well nothing. Don’t worry about it Jae Joong.” He smiled towards the end of his sentence and I could very much tell that it was forced.

“Oh… okay.” I just threw in some words as answer, not believeing a word he said.

‘He’s definitely hiding something.’

“Here we are!” He called out as he pulled the brakes. The familiar sight of a dilapidated building, called home, greeted me. I held the food in my hand and got out of the car. The beeping sound indicated that he had locked it.

“Let’s go.” I called out to him and raced up the stairs.

I rummaged through my pockets with my free hand and took out my key.

“Jun Su! Chang Min! I’m home!” I yelled as I placed the food on the table. I turned around and felt like killing Jung Yun Ho. “Oh for Heaven’s sake! Yun Ho! Take off your shoes!” He looked blurly at me for awhile before nodding his head, understanding what I said.

Taking off his shoes before coming into his house was not exactly a thing that was needed. I mean, he didn’t have to clean up after himself!

“Hyung you’re back! Chang Min yelled from behind the door and thundering footsteps could be heard. The neighbours are going to complain about this. I swear.

“Hyung! Oh Yun Ho Hyung! Hello!” Chang Min grinned and waved crazily at Yun Ho and he waved back in return.

“I bought food!” I announced and pointed to the bag on the table. Chang Min’s eyes glittered and sparkled as he ran towards the table and took out all the bozes and containers.

“Oooooo! Kimchi dumplings! Japchae! Without the veggies! Deeokboggi! Hyung you really are the best.” And without even waiting for Jun Su to join him, he stuffed a dumpling into his mouth and opened up the tub of Japchae. “Thanks Hyung!” He said, voice muffled due to the dumpling digesting in his mouth.

I laughed slightly and more thumping sounds could be heard.

“Hyung you’re—WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE JUNG YUN HO!?” Typical reaction of Kim Jun Su. He ran towards Yun Ho and glared at him. “What are you doing here?!”

“See I told you he’d send me death glares Jae Joong.” Yun Ho told me and turned back to Jun Su.

“Nice seeing you too Jun Su. I just followed your brother here to give you your dinner. We are now about to go on a date thank you very much.” He blew at his fingernails and smirked at Jun Su. Ouch he’s not going to be very happy.

“D-d-d-date?! W-WHAT?! You’re dating my brother?! Kim Jae Joong? The most gorgeous man on the surface of this Earth apart from Park Yoo Chun?!”

We both stared at Jun Su in disbelief, “PARK YOO CHUN?!”

Jun Su gawked in realization of what he just said and clamped his mouth shut.

“I mean… I m-mean JUNG YUN HO! YOU! How could you be dating my gorgeous brother who is not in any way better looking than Park Yoo Chun?!”

I rolled my eyes and so did Yun Ho.

“Just get the question over and done with Jun Su.” Yun Ho said as he yawned and stretched his arms above his head.

“Jung Yun Ho you stupid brat! You’re nothing compared to Yoo Chun!” He yelled defensively and crossed his arms over his chest.

“Will it kill you to leave Yoo Chun out in just one of your sentences?” Yun Ho asked, voice tainted with sarcasm. Jun Su is not going to like this…

“I hate you.” He stated and frowned.

“Well I hate you too.” Came the exact same reply from Yun Ho whjo had the exact same expression as Jun Su. I looked at the two of them and I swear. They can entertain you by just staring at each other.

“Yah Jun Su Hyung! The Japchae is really good! And there’s very little left. So if you still want it, then come over here now!” Chang Min called from the table. Thank you my dearest youngest brother Chang Min. Hyung owes you one.

Jun Su scowled one last time at Yun Ho before retreating to the table. I grabbed Yun Ho’s hand and motioend to the door, “Before he comes back.” I whispered and he instantly nodded, dashing out of the door.

“A LITTLE LEFT?! CHANG MIN THERE’S NOTHING LEFT! HOW COULD YOU BE SO CRUEL AND COLD BLOODED AND LEAVE—“ I shut the door behind me and smiled, contented. “Well that should keep them busy.”

Yun Ho smiled and tugged my hand. I willingly followed after him.

“What restaurant are we going to anyway?” I asked him once we were in the car. He paused for a second before answering, “Actually it’s not really a restaurant.” He pointed to the backseat of the car and my eyes popped out.

“Are you serious Yun Ho? Oh my God are you serious? You, the almighty Jung Yun Ho, eating a PICNIC?!” I yelled, unable to believe it all. But all he did was nod, proud of his doings and turned the engine on. “Yeah why not? I’ve never been to a picnic before! I’ve always wanted to.” I looked at him.

“Your parents never brought you on one before?” He snorted before continuing, “My mother doesn’t like getting her dress dirty while my father he just… he just… he just doesn’t really like spending time with me.” He sounded saddened at the mention of that.

“O-Oh okay I see.” What else could I say?

He pulled up at a park I had never seen before.

“I used to come here when I was younger. It’s really quiet and peaceful here.” I nodded and reached for the picnic basket and brought it out with me. “Let’s go then!” I said and walked side by side with him.

He pointed to a big oak tree and I raised my eyebrow in question.

“This is my favourite tree. I used to climb it all the time but now since I’m older and fatter… I’d probably break the branches.

A merry laugh escaped my lips and I examined the tree. It was old. Definitely. But it had a sense of, a sense of home. Somewhere where you could find peace and comfort when there was nobody there for you.

I set out the picnic mat and placed the food carefully down on the ground.

“Assorted sandwiches, fruits, muffins, Yun Ho did you pack this?” He nodded and grabbed a muffin.

“What you think I’d bring a plate of steak along with me? Do you think I’m stupid?” He looked at me, waiting for an answer but all I did was pop a sandwich into my mouth.

“I actually thought you’d do that.” He glared at me but laughed it off anyway.

“Yun Ho…” My voice turned serious and he noticed, immediately shutting up. “What is it Jae Joong?” I fumbled with my fingers for a bit before looking back at him. He knew I was not playing around this time.

“Well, erm… could you… erm, well, tell me about, err, why you don’t like studying?” He immediately tensed up and looked down at the grass. “You don’t have to tell me if you don’t want to! I was just… just curious.” I added that in, giving the option to back out it it was too much for him to handle.

He didn’t ive me a straight answer. Instead, he just started his story. His life story. The story I had never heard before and wanted very much to hear.

He took a deep breath before continuing.

“My father he…”

-FLASHBACK-

“Good job Jun Min! Keep up the good work!” A father ruffled up the hair of his elder son, showering him with love and praise. Yet again, his elder son, Jung Jun Min had scored a hundred marks and had topped the level yet again in Math.

“Yun Ho-ah, how did you do?” A kind, comforting voice of a mother drifted across the room, question intended for her younger son. But he kept quiet and stood in the dark corner alone, not wanting to face his father.

“What did you get Yun Ho?” The father marched over and grabbed the fragile piece of paper from out of his hands.

The boy kept his head low, ashamed.

“I don’t really see what the problem is to score full marks like your brother does Yun Ho. 86. Which 12-year-old scores 86 for their Math test?” The father stated, voice tinted with sarcasm.

“I topped the class…” The little boy muttered softly, not daring to look up.

“You topped the class? Your brother topped the level.”

The younger boy clenched his fists slightly, feeling inferior. Superbly inferior.

“You will never be as good as your brother. That is why he’ll be taking over the company. You, Jung Yun Ho, will never be good enough. You’ll never be able to outshine your brother. Never.” His father’s words pierced his heart endlessly as he bit his lip to prevent tears from spilling over but he failed miserably.

“Crying? What’s there to cry?” His father mocked at him, not even bothering to offer a slight bit of comfort.

“Honey calm down.” The mother said softly, not bearing to look at her son in this pitiful state anymore.

“I am calming down. Come Jun Min. Let’s discuss our company shares again.” The boy looked over at his younger brother sadly. He so wanted to run across and give him a big hug but he didn’t dare to. Not when he was the cause of all this. He walked away silently and meekly, not daring to make a sound.

Once they were both out of sight, Yun Ho collapsed onto the ground, sobbing uncontrollably while his mother stroked his hair tenderly.

-END OF FLASHBACK-

"B-But I thought you didn't have a brother?" I started but immediately clamped my mouth shut and let him continue his explaination.

“I… I really did study. I studied everyday for seven hours. From the moment I got back, I’d bathe and eat and immediately go and study. I’d study till eight and ate dinner before studying again. I slept at around one every night. I studied because… because I wanted, for once in my life, to make my father proud of me. I’ve never been good in Math and that test was the final test of elementary school. I wanted to do my best. So I did. But I guess, I guess my best wasn’t good enough for him.”

I listened intently and waited for him to continue.

“My brother… my brother was the person I loved the most in this world. He was always there for me. He’d comfort me, love me, accept me and praise me. Even for the littlest things he’d encourage and pat me on the back saying ‘well done Yun Ho’. But when I was sixteen, he… he died from cancer. Leukemia they call it. It spread too fast and he… he just died. On the day of his funeral, I wept the most. The person I treasured the most in the world was gone. And my father… my father he told me that… that it should have been me who died instead of him. My father never treated me as a son, nor a relative. Only someone on the surface of the Earth. So from then on, I decided. I decided that I wouldn’t try anything for him anymore. He’s wasn’t going to acknowledge any good things I did anyway so what’s the point of even trying?”

He took a gulp of air.

“So that’s why I’m what I am now.”

He was crying now. His cheeks were stained with tears and he started choking on them. I reached out and hugged him close, gently patting his head, still stunned about how heartless his father could be. “Yun Ho I… I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”

“Of course you didn’t know. I didn’t tell anyone.” He repeated my previous answer and I smiled.

“I always came here after those verbal abuses by my father. I would sit under this tree for hours, thinking. Just thinking. And that put me at peace. Even if there was nobody to turn to, I felt calm.” I let my fingers trace his cheek and kissed it softly.

“Not anymore. You’re stuck with me, unfortunately.” He grinned and took my hand, “I’m glad I am.” He gestured to the food.

“Let’s eat. I’m starving!” And grabbed a sandwich before stuffing it into his mouth. I smiled at the fact that he had opened up so much to me but I couldn’t help but still get the feeling that something wasn’t right. I shook the feeling away and concentrated on what was going on at the present.

That I, Kim Jae Joong, was on a date with Jung Yun Ho, the man I love.

And I don’t intend on changing that last fact.
