I inhaled the fresh scent of mint and the slight tinge of strawberry as I snuggled closer to the source of the smell.
‘Ah his bed smells wonderful…’
“Urgh…” The source seemed to be making noise.
My arm stupidly moved over to envelope the source into a hug and I felt it move under me.
“Uhh…” It groaned again and I opened my eyes groggily.
‘I see my school uniform…’
I moved my head up and looked at the person in pure shock and horror.
“Ahh!” I yelled and pushed him straight off the bed.
“JUNG YUN HO WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! YOU PERVERT!” I accused, pulling the jacket of my school uniform over my chest dramatically.
“Ow what the fuck?! Oi chicken! What did you do that for?” He shouted back at me as he rubbed his head which hit against his bedside table.
“You pervert! You didn’t do anything to me right?” I peaked through my clothes and sighed a sigh of relief when I saw no bite marks whatsoever.
“Huh? Do what? Who would want to do anything to you? What happened anyway?!” He yelled again, now on his feet, staring down at me.
“You were practically hugging me to sleep and I pushed you off the bed you pervert! I’m sure you did something!” I hit him hard on the arm and he grabbed it and began howling in pain.
“Oww! Ow ow ow ow ow! Yah Kim Jae Joong you… You… Argh damn you!” He hollered and glared daggers at me which I gladly returned.
“Pervert!”
“Violent asshole!”
“Molester!”
“Inconsiderate jerk!”
“Psycho!”
“Retard!”
“Brat!”
“Maniac!”
“Self centered!”
“Annoying now shut up!”
And he tackled me down on the bed, arms on either side of me.
“Shut the hell up chicken!”
“What?! I am not a chicken Jung!”
It was then that I realized that his face was incredibly close to mine and I was trapped—pinned under him.
Our breathings were uneven, short and sharp but they were synchronized. I felt heart rise to my cheeks as my heart began beating strangely fast.
“J-Jung get off me.” I muttered from under him and he took awhile to digest my request.
“O-Oh sorry chicken.” And pushed himself off till he was sitting at the edge of the bed.
I looked at the clock and it showed that I only had ten minutes of lesson left with him. 6.20pm.
“We have 10 minutes left. What do you want to do?” He scoffed and rolled his eyes, “Calculative ass.”
I frowned, “I am not! I have another job after this and I have to go home and feed my siblings!” I paused when I realized that I had revealed too much about my personal life to this bastard here.
“You have another job? What job?” He looked at me, clearly interested.
“I work part time at a ramen delivery restaurant about an hour’s ride by bus from here.” He thought for a second, “What time does your shift start?”
“Around 8.30… wait why are you asking me all this?” I shot him a suspicious look.
“No reason. Just curious. What time does your shift end?” Again I shot him the suspicious look but answered anyway.
“Around 1.30.”
He nearly choked on his saliva. “1.30? As in 1.30am? Are you serious?”
I shrugged my shoulders. “I’m used to it. Remember, I managed to come to this school because of my grades. Not wealth. I have none of that.”
He nodded his head slowly. “Oh okay.”
I heard poundings up the stairs and they seemed to be heading for The Jung’s room.
“YUN HO!” Mrs J—BoA came running into his room and threw herself at him, giving him a death-like-grip at the neck.
“U-Umma! What is it now? I can’t breathe!” And he turned slightly purple.
“I bought some food! Do you want to come down and eat? Oh Jae Joong! Do join us for dinner! It must have been so tough teaching my son here today!”
The Jung and I exchanged looks before I smiled apologetically.
“I’d be glad to BoA but I have to go home. My siblings are waiting for their dinner.” She shot me a curious look.
“Can’t they just ask the chef to cook something for them?” Oh so she thinks I’m rich.
“Oh no BoA we have no chef. I’m their chef.” And Yun Ho smiled a little at this, earning a hard glare from me.
“You cook?” She asked again, losing interest in holding onto Yun Ho’s neck.
“Yeah I do. I’ve been… trained since a very young age.” I said softly, slightly embarrassed by the fact that a 18 year old boy cooks meals for his siblings.
“Oh that’s so cute! So you have to go home and prepare dinner for them?” I nodded immediately and picked up my bag, ready to leave.
“Oh no! Jae Joong how about this. I call up the delivery service and you tell your adorable siblings that you’ll be having dinner at your friend’s house so they can eat from the delivery service instead.” She sounded so enthusiastic about it, it wavered my decision.
Not wanting to disappoint her, I sighed softly and dropped my bag.
“Okay BoA. Just this once.” She clapped her hands in glee.
“Excellent! What kind of food do they like?”
“One bowl of kimchi chigae with extra rice and Champong with extra prawns.” I replied immediately, thinking of how much Jun Su loved his prawns and Chang Min wolfing down the rice greedily.
Just the thoughts of my family put an eased smile on my face.
“Wow you know so much about your siblings? I’m impressed! I’m sure your parents must be too.” She answered casually, not noticing a change in my expression.
“Umma… Erm how about you go down and prepare the food first? I’ll stay here and help Jae Joong pack his things." Yun Ho suggested as he pushed her out of the room.
“Hey! Stop pushing me! Oh well see you two later then.” She said breezily, hopping out of the room.
"Hello? Korean delivery? I'd like to order one Kimchi chigae with extra rice and champong withe extra shrimps. Yes! To XXX at XXX street."
Was heard in the background.
My head was turned to one side as I felt the wounds of my heart reopen.
“Y-Yah are you okay?” He asked, a hand resting on my shoulder.
I nodded slightly and forced a weak smile onto my face, “I’m fine. Thanks.” And grabbed my books before dumping them carelessly into my bag.
"Sorry. My mother can be like that at times." He said as he looked at me uneasy but I shook my head.
"It's not her fault. She didn't know." I picked my bag up and zipped it up.
“Let’s go.” I said and walked out of the room without him. He followed closely behind as I grabbed my phone from my pocket and dialed that oh so familiar number of home.
“Hello?”
“Hello Jun Su-ah, this is hyung.”
“Oh hi Hyung! Are you on your way back yet?”
“Actually, I’ll be at a friend’s eating dinner.”
“Oh… Okay. Chang Min’s kicking up a fuss about wanting to eat kimchi chigae tonight.”
I smiled.
“Oh that’s fine! My friend’s mother already ordered both kimchi chigae with extra rice and champong with extra prawns from the delivery service for you two monkeys.”
“Really hyung?”
“Really.”
“Hyung you’re the best!” And I could hear Chang Min singing ‘hallelujah’ in the background too.
“Hyung saranghae!” And he hung up the phone.
“Nado saranghae.” I whispered to no one and removed the phone from my ear.
“Your brother?” I heard Yun Ho ask from behind me and I nodded. “Those two monkeys can’t survive without food. I swear.”
“I wish I had a brother…” He muttered, looking rather enviously at me.
“You want a brother? Why?”
“I’ve always been alone. I never had anyone to play with when I was a baby or a toddler. They always put me in childcare. My parents that is. It was a private one so I was the only one there. I never had any friends.”
I could tell that that wasn't the real reason but kept quiet anyway.
I felt slightly sad at his pitiful childhood but reached out a patted his head.
“It’s okay Jung. You have tons of friends now.”
He scoffed, “Yeah friends my foot. The only true friend I have is Yoo Chun.” I smiled slightly and patted his head again.
“I’m a loner too.”
“Yeah I can see that.” I saw his lip curl up into a smirk and I glared at him.
“Chicken.”
“Jung! Shut up!” I yelled and hit him on the arm.
“Make me!” He yelled back and took off in the direction of the stairs.
He raced down and so did I.
‘Who knew marble could be so slippery?’
I landed my foot down on one of the last step and felt myself lose balance.
“Woah! Ahh!” I yelped as I felt my body contort in a manner that would allow no one to keep their footing.
“Ahh!” I yelled as I felt my body moved forwards. I shut my eyes tight, waiting to the impact but it never came.
I opened my eyes slightly and saw that Yun Ho and I were sprawled on the ground, him below me.
“Urgh…” He groaned. I looked up and saw that his head was against the wall.
“Oh gosh Jung are you okay? Does it hurt?” I asked worriedly as I moved towards him and rubbed the back of his head tenderly. “Does it hurt?”
He looked at me straight in the eyes.
His eyes were such a gorgeous colour. Such a deep shade of brown and yet it was flecked with hazel-hued browns here and there but whatever the colour was, it was pulling me closer and closer.
We stared at each other for the longest time before he gave a slight cough, sending me straight back to reality.
“S-Sorry.” I pushed myself off him and brushed the dust off me.
“Thanks for saving me.” I said and looked at him again, carefully this time not to make any eye contact with him.
“N-No problem.” I could tell he was also awkward with the situation.
I looked at him again and pointed to the dining room. “Shall we go?” He looked dazed for a second.
“Huh? Oh yeah. Oh okay let’s go.” And he hurriedly stood up, waiting for me to get on my feet as well. I quickly did it, not wanting to make him wait.
‘Why is my heart beating so fast again?’ I asked myself as I pressed a hand towards my chest, wanting to know the answer.
