[9 June 1999 – Friday – house at NT, HK]
The swift and powerful blow hit Tim’s face and the latter fell on the sandy ground at once. The assailant was about to deliver another kick when little Flora suddenly ran out of the back door and shouted.
FLORA: (stood in front of Tim) No, Uncle Barry! No! You can’t hit my Daddy!
TIM: (pressing on his wound) What do you want exactly?
FLORA: (exclaimed) Daddy! Blood!
TIM: I’m ok, sweetie!
BARRY: What do I want? I told you don’t let me see you again, or I’ll give you it hard to you every time I see you, scumbag!
FLORA: (announced) My Daddy is not a scumbag!
BARRY: (lowered his eyes) Silly Flora, have you forgotten what your Mummy told you?
FLORA: (insisted) Mummy didn’t say Daddy was a scumbag! (eyes wide staring at the intruder)
BARRY: (to Tim) You’ve got it lucky today; don’t let me see you here again!
FLORA: (ran to the grasses) Mummy, Uncle Barry hit Daddy!
TIM: (got himself up) Sweetie, who are you talking to?
FLORA: (pointing her finger before her) Mummy!
There was a negative omen which raided his heart. Consoling himself that it will be nothing more than unduly frets; he stepped forward and walked to Flora. Amidst the tall grasses, there was something like a stone, as he gets closer. He took a congealing look at Flora, who was still having her finger pointing up. Taking a deep breath, he trotted to carry Flora up and wheeled around swiftly.
Then he froze on the ground, his eyes still stuck on the stone.
FLORA: Daddy, are you okay? Why are your hands so shaky?
TIM: (puts her down slowly) Flora, tell… me… who… who is this?
FLORA: This is Mummy! Have you forgotten her as well? I often meet Mummy in my dreams! She told me yesterday that she wanted to see us and…
Little Flora went on rattling but nothing got its ways into his ears. He was perceptibly deaf now, to any world voices. He couldn’t identify with the solid, cold and grayish object in front of him. Right in front of him! It was unbelievable! He squatted down, shocked to the extent that nothing more could come to his mind, and touched the photo on the tombstone, then the carvings… “Our beloved daughter, Helen Fok Hei Yin, born on 30 May 1967, departed on 9 June 1998, Forever in our hearts.”
A freezing gust of wind entered his lungs, and his heart ached as if it had been tore opened. He knelt down before the stone and clutched onto the edge of the stone, leaning his head against it.
TIM: (looking up to Flora, shakingly) Flora, tell me, are you guys playing a trick on me, are you?
FLORA: No, Daddy, it’s…
KEUNG: (rushed out from the back door) Tim! You didn’t wait for me! I… (realized he is before the stone, halted his speech) Tim, you…
TIM: (incoherently) Keung! Tell me! Tell me why? How… how did this happen?
SANDY: (coming behind Chi Keung) And you still dare to ask again, why?!
TIM: Sandy? Why are you here as well?
SANDY: (sarcastically) I’m not as cold-blooded and inhumane like someone! I still remember today is my best friend’s death anniversary, and I am here to pay my respects to her!
TIM: (shouted) Impossible! You all are crazy! You all hid Helen, huh? Where? Where is she?!
SANDY: You are still pretending huh? What a good actor? No wonder Helen listened to you so much!
KEUNG: Nope, Sandy! The doctor said Tim had lost partial of his memory!
SANDY: Huh! Then why didn’t you choose to forget her as well, might as well! She never had a place in your heart, anyway!
TIM: (agitated) That’s not true!
KEUNG: (held his hands up) Wait! Tim, you’re bleeding, let me attend to your wound first! Let’s get into the house!
[Inside the house]
KEUNG: (taking out the cotton pads) What happened? Did Fok Geng Leung do this to you?
TIM: (restlessly) No…
KEUNG: (guessing) Barry? (Tim kept quiet) Who asked you to leave me at the cinema and come here by yourself? I…
TIM: (look up) You knew Barry will be here?
KEUNG: Yup, because today is…
TIM: Helen’s death anniversary! But why? Why?!
SANDY: (coming out from the kitchen with a cup of water, slammed the cup on the table, and the water splashed onto Tim) Why? We should be the ones asking the question! I don’t understand how you could do this to someone who loved you more than anything in the world! I can’t fathom how you could make her do such a thing, and sent her to her doom! Are you still human, rascal?
TIM: (pleadingly) Sandy, can you please tell me what happened? I can’t remember a single thing after August 1994!
SANDY: (sardonically) What an ironic time to choose to forget things!
TIM: (kneeling down) Sandy, please!
KEUNG: Tim, don’t do this!
TIM: Then you tell me!
KEUNG: Sandy, please just…
SANDY: I’ll say it on your account, Keung!
*FLASHBACKS – late October – Helen’s place*
SANDY: How was it? Did you tell him?
HELEN: (nods her head, dazingly) Yup…
SANDY: Then what was his response?
HELEN: (sobbing) Sandy… (leaning her head on Sandy’s shoulder) He said congrats! He said congratulations to me!
SANDY: Did you tell him it was his?
HELEN: (shaking his head) He said congrats, and I have no heart to say more…
SANDY: That creep! He should have known better!
HELEN: (crying) Sandy, what should I do now?
SANDY: I guess you’ll just have to go for the operation!
HELEN: (objected) No Sandy! I can’t do this! I can’t be so cruel!
SANDY: If not what is your choice?
HELEN: (weakly) This child is innocent!
SANDY: What would a child without a father be like?
HELEN: But it’s so unfair to Tim!
SANDY: (offended) Stop thinking about him, Helen! He don’t love you at all!
HELEN: No Sandy, he said he loved me!
SANDY: (exasperated) And you believed him?
HELEN: No Sandy, you don’t understand, it was only the second time he said this, so…
SANDY: (shook her) Wake up, my friend, wake up!
HELEN: Sandy, you won’t understand!
SANDY: Of course I don’t understand? What’s so special and what’s so good about this man?
HELEN: I don’t want to stay in HK, Sandy!
SANDY: Silly girl, where else can you go?
HELEN: I don't know, but I need to be away for a while!
*END OF FLASHBACKS*
TIM: And where did she go?
SANDY: She went to the states, and only returned a year later. Flora was already a few months old then.
TIM: And why didn’t she tell me?
SANDY: I don’t see how you could not have known! She was already separated with Barry then!
TIM: I’m sorry, please continue…
SANDY: (shakes her head) Even when she was back, she did not forget about you. Raising a child single-handedly had not been an easy task! Imagine each time when Flora was crying, sick, unwell, where were you? And not to mention the times when Helen herself was suffering from depression. Have you ever take pity on her? (answered herself) No! Instead, you unscrupulously made used of her again and again!
TIM: (murmured to himself) That idiot, he promised me!
SANDY: When Ivy was having her trial on, she accompanied you all the while, to every single corner you went! That day, she was down with a fever after risking the rain with you. And you even threw your temper at her! Do you know how heartbroken she felt then? All you ever cared about was someone’s wife! Yes, I know Ivy is our friend too, but can you just be fairer to Helen? She’s the most innocent of all? What had she got to do with Ivy’s trial? What had she done to cause all her sufferings? What wrong had she done you!
It was almost another pitiless strike into his heart; he tries to calm himself down, for her to continue…
