Chi Lik rushed to Mount Grace hospital and went straight to the reception asking about Ling. Then he went to the Intensive Care Unit as informed by the nurse. Keung was already inside and sitting besides Tin Ling, but he had fallen asleep. Chi Lik stood behind the glass, and fixed his eyes on Tin Ling with his hands on the glass. Her head was wrapped up and tubes were visible around her.
Chi Lik tightened his fist as tears were squeezed out from the corners of his eyes. Then he bang them against the glass uncontrollably, and that alerted Ah Keung. The former took a swift turn and hid behind the wooden door.
Chi Keung rubs his eyes tiredly and took a glance at the clock on the wall. It was already half way through the night. He held up Tin Ling’s hand and began to talk to her. Chi Lik moves his head closer to the door.
KEUNG: Ah Ling, I’m sorry… if it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have been knocked down by the car. I know I am so stupid, always saying the wrong things at the wrong times. Don’t blame Tim, it’s not his fault; it’s not your fault either. Everything was a mistake, and it all started because of me… do you hear me Ah Ling? Please wake up soon, I don’t want anything to happen to you… I really…
His speech was suddenly interrupted by a noise outside. Footsteps of someone running away further and further were passed into his ears…

[The next day]
Someone pulls a blanket over the asleep Chi Keung, and then sat down besides him. He wakes up in a minute.
KEUNG: (opens his eyes and feels the blanket) It’s you? (yawns) Where’s Tim?
MEINA: He is grabbing a bite with Flora in the canteen.
KEUNG: (smiles) Since when have you become so caring?
MEINA: As long as you don’t argue with me!
KEUNG: You should smile more and don’t act rough, so Tim will like you more!
MEINA: You really think so?
KEUNG: Yes.
MEINA: (rolls her eyes) Haven’t you been one of those disliking me with him?
KEUNG: Maybe… I don't know… as long as Tim is happy with his choice, I shall be happy for him as a friend!
MEINA: (pats him on the shoulder) That sounds more like a human!
KEUNG: Ha! I just finish my words and you’re back to normal again…
MEINA: Sorry then!
KEUNG: Tim will know your efforts one day! He’s changed a lot already!
MEINA: (softly) I know… that’s why I… (pauses) Erh… how’s Ling doing? Still no response?
KEUNG: The doctor says she can be transferred out of ICU tomorrow, as she is out of danger. But as for when she shall wake up, it’s hard to say…
MEINA: Let’s just hope we can talk to her more and she can hear us…
KEUNG: Thanks!
MEINA: You don’t need to thank me, I’m her friend too, (winks) besides you!
KEUNG: Erh… me… just want to do my part as a friend, like you!
MEINA: (laughs) Nah… if it were me lying there, I bet you wouldn’t stay here overnight and accompany me!
KEUNG: Well… you surely don’t hope the one accompanying you is me!
MEINA: Since when have you started to speak with brains, Keung?
KEUNG: Hey! I always have brains, ok? Just that before your Tim, I’m fated to play second fiddle!
MEINA: Are you snickering at me?
KEUNG: Nope, but… I heard Flora’s been giving you some trouble…
MEINA: It’s just normal reaction. Kids of this age like to gain attention and of course I won’t bear a grudge against her!
KEUNG: Not that but I’m just worried for you how you’re going to get along with her in future.
MEINA: Why would I have to get along with her in future? You are digressing to space, Keung!
KEUNG: Don’t tell me you’re so silly to think that Tim would give up Flora to be with you?
MEINA: (laughs) No, certainly not! If he does such a thing, I’ll be the first to strangle him!
KEUNG: Huh?
MEINA: Kidding! You’re still so silly as usual, Keung! No wonder Sandy always teases you!
KEUNG: How did you know? But it’s not only her; all of us like to tease me!
MEINA: Aren’t you glad to provide us with at least some source of entertainment?
KEUNG: Oh! So you all treat me like a clown!
MEINA: Of course not!
KEUNG: (grins) Relax! Kidding!
MEINA: Ha! You!
TIM: (enters) What’s the din about?
MEINA: (greets) Tim, done with eating? (to Flora) Flora, what did you eat just now?
TIM: (seeing that Flora kept quiet) Oh, she just had a burger and milk…
MEINA: Oh, you shouldn’t let her eat too many burgers, perhaps once a week!
TIM: Erm… ok, I know… (to Keung) How’s Ah Ling?
KEUNG: (straight face) Still the same…
TIM: You must be exhausted, Keung…
KEUNG: (adamant) I’m ok… as for the company…
TIM: That should be the least you are worrying about!
FLORA: (went to Tin Ling’s side) Ling jie jie, why are you still sleeping? Daddy, why Ling jie jie don’t wake up and see me?
TIM: Ling jie jie is not feeling well, let’s see if you can wake her up…
FLORA: She is not feeling well so I shouldn’t disturb her. Then I shouldn’t wake her up…
TIM: Don’t you want to talk to her?
FLORA: I want!
TIM: So you can talk to her now, she will know it…
FLORA: What should I say?
KEUNG: Anything you like!
FLORA: Then can I sing a song for jie jie?
KEUNG: (chuckles) Sure, if you like…
TIM: What song do you want to sing?
FLORA: (proudly) Amazing grace!
TIM/MEINA: Amazing grace?
FLORA: Yes!
TIM: You know how to sing that song? It’s hard to sing…
FLORA: Of course I know! Mummy taught me that!
TIM: Then do you understand what the song is talking about?
FLORA: Mummy told me a story about it… and Mummy told me her story…
TIM: (thinking) The one about her car trapped in the snowstorm?
FLORA: Yah, Mummy said it was because of this song so she didn’t die… so this song can be used to save those people in danger…
KEUNG: In danger?
FLORA: I want Ling jie jie to wake up and talk to me also!
MEINA: How could you remember so many things, Flora?
FLORA: Because Mummy told me that! I remember all what Mummy told me!
MEINA: (touched) Why?
FLORA: Because Mummy loves Flora and Flora loves Mummy!
TIM: (carrying her up) Silly kid…
FLORA: Daddy when will Mummy come to see us again?
TIM: Shhh… don’t talk nonsense!
KEUNG: Meina, what’s wrong? You’re crying!
MEINA: (wiping her tears) Nothing, but I just feel sad for Tim and Flora. The whole family should be together! Excuse me, I’m going to the washroom…
KEUNG: Erh… Flora, didn’t you say you want to sing ‘Amazing grace’? You may start now…
[outside]
Meina was walking hastily out of the room when a hand caught hers.
MEINA: (turns) Who’s that? (sees him) Cheung…
LIK: (covers her mouth) Miss Ko, you better don’t talk… come with me… (goes into an empty ward)
MEINA: What do you want?
LIK: How’s Ah Ling?
MEINA: If you want to know, just go in and take a look!
LIK: If I could, I wouldn’t have to ask you!
MEINA: Too bad then!
LIK: Hold it there! (she turns around) Please… I just want to know… I’m so close… I’m just so close to her but couldn’t make my presence known, do you understand how I feel? That Chi Keung is always around!
MEINA: Why can’t you just go visit her in an aboveboard manner?
LIK: (stubbornly) Because I’m not done with my plans yet!
MEINA: You guys are always so stubborn!
LIK: Can you help me?
MEINA: What?
LIK: I just want to see her for a while… I’m just so close, yet…
MEINA: Ok, I get it. (sighs) Later I will tell Keung and the rest to go home and rest, they need to rest anyway!
LIK: (gratefully) Thank you!

PS: Chi Lik seems to turn out to be not too bad... will he wake up in time?
