Meina and Tim were walking to the car park with little Flora in Meina’s arms. Upon finding his vehicle, Tim opens the back seat for Meina to place Flora in it first. Meina closes the door and was about to enter by the other side, when she suddenly sneezes. Tim immediately took off his coat and pulls it over her. She turns and smiles at him.
Just at that moment, the screeching of tires was heard and Meina spotted a speeding vehicle coming towards them. As the vehicle got closer, Meina saw a hand with a gun sticking out of the window, seemingly aiming at Tim. She pushes him away instantaneously, as he fell away to one side.
A single gunshot was heard, and Tim turns his head to take a brief glimpse of the vehicle. Then he quickly turned back and saw Meina laying on the ground, clutching on her stomach, her whole blouse was stained with fresh blood. Without further delay, he carried Meina up, and tried to open the car door and wake Flora up. The latter rubs her eyes in mild confusion, while following her father back into the hospital again.
Tim runs straight into the A&E department and shouted hysterically for the nurses to come forward and give him a hand. Soon, they placed Meina on the mobile stretcher and she was pushed into the A&E station for immediate aid. Tim was told to wait outside as expected. Then he held Flora’s hand and carried her up into his arms, not a minute later running to the lift.
Getting out of the lift, Tim proceeds to Tin Ling’s ward and alerted Chi Keung…
KEUNG: (surprised) Tim? Why are you here again? I thought you went home with Meina? Where’s she?
TIM: (hastily) Keung, quick we must bring Ah Ling out of here at once!
KEUNG: Why? What happened?
TIM: At the car park, someone was after my life and Meina took that bullet for me, she’s still in emergency rescue now!
KEUNG: WHAT?!
TIM: That person may well be Cheung Chi Lik, I don't know! He may have followed me here!
KEUNG: Is he here to take Ling away?
TIM: I don't know… can you please wake her up and you two leave the place with Flora at once?
KEUNG: What about the discharge procedures?
TIM: We can’t afford to think of these trivial things now, please Keung, bring them to a safe place!
KEUNG: But where?
TIM: (thinking) Hmm… Helen’s small house in NT! I don’t think Cheung Chi Lik will know of there!
KEUNG: Ok we’ll just listen to you!
TIM: (hands Flora over to Keung) Help me take care of Flora! I’m going down to see how Meina is!
-----
It was past two hours after Chi Keung and left the hospital as told by Tim. The latter was still waiting outside the operating theatre, giving regular glances at the light above the door. It was a complex feeling within him. He feels like history was repeating itself. But nobody would want the same outcome to occur twice in a row.
He was both anxious and worried-sick, to the extent that he could not hold his patience any further. Then he went below the hospital ground, and sat on the bench just a distance away from the hospital entrance. He lighted a cigarette and smoked a few puffs to help himself relax, while breathing hard. He didn’t understand why he always had to implicate innocent people into his struggles with others, but it just happens. Guiltiness possessed his heart for the moment.
Then he heard a familiar song, as it came from a little radio placed on another bench. Amazing grace! God, was he dreaming? There was a little group of people sitting around that radio, lowering their heads, closing their ears, and putting their hands together, seemingly praying for something. It reminded him of the time when Ivy was having her trial in Taiwan, those terrible days!
But there was Helen by his side, and she sang amazing grace, and told him her own story. He didn’t appreciate that truly then. Because he thought she didn’t understand how harsh it would be in lockup. But he was wrong! He didn’t understand her too! She didn’t understand what it was like to be in lockup, neither did he understand what it was like on the verge of death! He did not empathize with her; he did not see with her. He could imagine how sad she felt then, when she shared her own experience with him sincerely, yet he was reproaching her for not being able to identify with them. How many regrets could one have in his life? He didn’t know the answer, but he knows he’s going to have a lot! Most of them, it lies with her...
For the second time, Ivy’s life was in danger. But no, this time it isn’t Ivy, but Meina! Meina and Ivy; Ivy and Meina, they’re just so similar in looks! Not similar, but exactly.
“I believe, no matter how desperate a situation I find myself in, there exists miracles in this world. For even the hardest path in life, if we would advance in the direction which we deem as the most precious one, we will find the light…”
Those words keep repeating at the back of his mind, as they ring loudly in his ears, and got imprinted deeply in his heart. It was his turn to close his eyes, put his hands together, and sincerely offer his prayers. For things cannot keep happening like that, and the reasons are far too ridiculous, too implicative…
