Chapter 4

003| Meet: Stephanie Le

Well. Yeah. I hope you guys enjoy this.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Stephanie’s POV
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I had my backpack emptied out. I was taking the clothes that I needed and shoes that I would need too, and put them in my backpack.

My mom was throwing me out. Oh well. Dad didn’t have much of a say in anything. She banned my relatives from taking me in so I would have to live on the streets. Oh well. Her lost. Not mine.

I took some undergarments, t-shirts, two sweaters, three tank tops, mostly jeans and pants, some socks and that fit half way into my backpack. Thank god Mom bought me a big backpack then.

I looked around, I couldn’t take anything else with me. Well… I deleted everything on my computer, and saved it onto cds incase I ever needed them again. My music, I just saved all of them onto my mp3 player. And for a backup, onto a flash drive.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Flash back.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“YOU NEED TO START PICKING UP YOUR ACT!!” Mom cursed at me while I was sitting in the chair.

“Then you need to start making things fair for me and Tiffany. She’s freaking 12 years old. And she doesn’t do a crap here.” I spoke calmly.

Tiffany was my little sister. Who didn’t do anything.

“YOU ARE OLDER THEN HER! YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT YOU’RE SUPPOSE TO DO! NOT GET JEALOUS OF YOUR SISTER!” Mom yelled.

“I am doing it. Except. I can’t do it and handle homework at the same time.” again, calmly said.

“I’VE HAD ENOUGH OF YOU! YOU HAVE TWO HOURS TO MOVE OUT OF YOUR ROOM AND OUT OF MY HOUSE!! YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO GO TO ANY OF YOUR RELATIVES HOUSE!!” Mom yelled, picking up the phone.

“Fine with me.” I got up, took my backpack and headed up to my room.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
End of flashback.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It was summer anyways. Oh well. I looked around my room, making sure I took everything I needed, clothes. Check. Music, check. I neatly made my bed and left my stuffed animals there. There wasn’t any room to bring them. I saw a picture hanging on the wall. It was mom, me, dad, and Tiffany standing there, smiling like idiots. I also grabbed my camera. To have the good memories.

The door to my room opened as Tiffany walked in.

“Stephanie. Where are you going to go?” Tiffany asked.

“I already called my friend. She’s picking me up. I’m going to stay with her.” I smiled, “I’ll call you ok? Here’s my email if you ever want to talk.”

I wrote down my email and gave it to her, “Don’t show this to mom or dad k?”

She nodded and gave me a hug.

“I’ll miss you.” Tiffany said.

“I’ll miss you too. Don’t worry. I’ll see you around maybe. K?” I smiled.

“STEPHANIE!! TWO HOURS IS UP!! YOUR FRIEND IS HERE!!” I heard my mom yelled.

I sighed.

“Bye Tiff.” I gave her a hug and walked down. Picking up my black boots, blue sandals and white tennis shoes.

“Bye dad.” I said, “Bye mom.” I walked out the door and into my friend’s black car.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I threw my backpack into her back seat and got into the passenger side.
“Thanks Amanda.” I said putting on my seat belt.
“So. What are you going to do now? Just live at my house the whole time?” She asked.
“Well. I’ll only be staying for a couple months. Hopefully. I’ll be auditioning for an entertainment in August. I just need a ride down to Minneapolis.” I answered.
“Alright. Are you hungry at all?” she turned out into the highway.
“Nope.” I smiled.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
August 23rd.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was two months after I was thrown out of the house. Tiffany kept in touch with me through email, just to be safe. I told her my plans and told her not to tell mom or dad about them. Though. I was told dad already and he’s fine with it. Seeing as I have no future in medical anymore.
I told my cousin Jessica about my plans too. She supported it and I kept in touch with her, and I made her promise not to tell anyone about this. It’s a little secret.
I looked at what I could wear. Something casual and easy to move in, since there was a rhythm test. I already knew what song I was going to sing too. It was going to be singing Reflections from Mulan.
“Steph. You ready?” Amanda looked at me.
“No… I don’t know what to wear.” I looked at my clothes.
“This.” She held up dark blue jeans. “That.” My white polo. “Your white tennis shoes.”
“Alright alright.” I shook my head and quickly slipped on the jeans, polo, grabbed a sweater just in case and went out to the dining room, where Amanda’s parents were.
“Thank you for taking me in for the last two months.” I smiled and headed out to Amanda’s car.
It was a long 35 minute drive into Minneapolis to the audition center.
“You’ll need a pen?” Amanda suggested.
“Right. I forgot about that.” I laughed a little.
“You forget a lot of things. I’m surprised that you remember today was the audition day.” Amanda joked.
“Yeah. But. I’m excited. So… That’s probably why I didn’t forget it.” I smiled.
Amanda turned on Reflections in her car and made me start to sing so she could criticize me.
We started to laugh after I purposely made a couple mistakes so she would have something to say.
“Remember. You only have 30 seconds. Which part are you going to sing?” Amanda asked as we were stuck in traffic for a little bit.
“Umm… Which part is best with my voice?” I asked her.
“The chorus leading into the bridge.” She answered, “Though, I think it would’ve been better if you sang Remember me from Phantom of the Opera.”
“Yeah. But I want a simple song.” I smiled.
“Reflections is not a simple song! Remember all those changes you made onto the music sheet?” Amanda exclaimed as he parked in the parking lot.
“Ok. If I make it. I’ll buy dinner.” I smiled.
“Since when do you have money?” Amanda asked.
“Since my dad decided to meet me at the library to give me some money. Even though I said I don’t need money.” I smiled.
“You’re dad’s too nice. You’re mom is the devil on the other hand.” Amanda joked.
“Haha.” we headed and stood in line at the front of the hotel.
It wasn’t long before we were at the ballroom of where the auditions were taking place.
“Fill in this application and then return it to me.” the lady in the front said.
“Ok.” I took to and headed to sit in a seat and watched what was being played.
“You’re going to have a lot of competition.” Amanda said.
“I know. I like the posters… I want it.” I laughed, taking a look at the application
On the top corner of the application had SM’s logo and application after it.
“Amanda. What’s my height?” I asked.
“Stand up and take off one shoe.” she told me.
“You’re about 5’2’’. Seeing as I’m 5’3’’ and I’m taller.” She smiled.
“Don’t start.” I laughed.
I pulled out a sticker picture of me and placed it at the picture box.
“You’ve been in so many competitions. Then why are you scared to do a solo for choir and why did Brenna put you in select then?” Amanda asked.
“Cause I asked her too. I never was scared too. I just said it.” I smiled.
“You liar.” Amanda punched me in the arm lightly.
I went up and handed in my application.
“Good. You’re number 5593.” She handed me a big sticker to put on my top.
“Thank you.” I smiled and went to sit down. “We’re going to be here for a long time…”
“Oh well. Need water?” Amanda held up a bottle of ice water.
“Thanks.” I took a drink and watched the videos that were being played.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was only 2 hours and we were starting to get hungry.

“Numbers 3340-3350.” A voice over the speakers said.

“Let’s grab a bite.” Amanda suggested, pointing to an area where they were serving food.

“Alright. I’ll pay.” I smiled, “After this. Let’s head to Tram Anh. It’s a good food place.”

We both ordered a small hamberger and small fries.

We sat there and ate, waiting for my number to be called.

I paid for both and then we went back to sit in our seats, watching a replay of Boa’s music video for her American’s debut.

“I’m nervous now.” I bounced my leg in my chair.

“How are you nervous? You perform nationals in singing, dancing, and piano. And yet you’re nervous of an audition? It would make sense.” Amanda laughed.

“Shut up. You’re not helping.” I shook my head.

“Numbers 5590-5600.” a voice said over the intercom.

“Good luck.” Amanda tugged on my arm.

I smile and cursed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We all stood in our own separate yellow tape boxes.
The lady said something in Korean as everyone looked at each other in confusion.
“She said state your name, number, what you’re going to do and then perform it.” I translated to make it go faster, since I was getting nervous.
“I’m Victoria Xiong. Number 5590. I’m going to perform Remember Me from The Phantom Of the Opera.” The first girl stated.
I was amazed. She has a really good voice. Wow… I really am in for some competition.
I watched the judges. They looked bored.
“Ok.” I heard the male judge say.
“I’m Doua Virasy. Number 5591. I’m going to perform Never had a Dream.” the short girl said.
She started to sing and was under the original pitch a little. I don’t blame her. It’s a hard song to sing.
It was only 10 seconds into the song when the female judge stopped her.
“I’m Hespher Pham. Number 5592. I’ll be singing Passion by Utada Hikaru.” the girl next to me said.
She was really good, better then the first singer. I started to get nervous.
It wasn’t until 45 seconds until the judge cut her.
“I’m Stephanie Le. Number 5593. I’ll be singing Relfections from Mulan.” I said.
“ ‘Who is that girl I see. Starring straight. Back at me. When will my reflection show. Who I am, in side.” I stopped.
I saw that everyone was looking at me as my face turned red.
I saw that the judges were nodding and the next person talked.
“I’m Rini Jang. Number 5594. I’m going to be doing a dance with 5595.” the girl said.
Judges nodded and play the cd.
The two girls stepped out of their box and started to dance for 45 seconds. It was a really good dance for two people.
“This is a rhythm test. You don’t have to dance if you don’t want to.” the judge said in English.
He played Kiss Kiss and everyone was nervous.
I stepped out my box and started to dance. I remember I did a dance to this song once.
When the song stopped. I saw that I was the only one dancing. It was a little nerve racking.
“Alright. 5592, 5593. You two stay back. The rest of you can leave.” the judge said, in English.
Wait. If one of them could speak English… why… oh… right.
“5592. Hespher pham. It says that you sang in a school competition and won 1st. Can you sing another song for us?” asked the judge.
“Alright. I’ll sing Every Heart by boa, the English version.” Hespher said.
Singing a Boa song?? Is that a good idea??
She hit every note on as the judges watch and then cued her off.
“Alright thank you. Please leave now.” said the judge.
“ You speak Korean?” the Korean judge asked.
“Yes. I’ve been taking classes for a while.” I replied in Korean.
“What other languages do you know?” she asked.
“English, Vietnamese, Korean, and Chinese. Basics in Spanish.” I answered.
“Can you sing us a song in Chinese, the whole song?” she asked.
“Ok.” I thought up a song. “I will sing Please Say by Kevin Cheng.”
I started out with Kevin’s part and then ended with his duet partner.
I looked at them and they were amazed.
“You’re Chinese is very good.” they said.
“Thank you.” I smiled.
“Are your parents here?” the judges asked.
“No. I was thrown out of the house. I’m living with my friend right now.” I answered politely.
“Oh. Do your parents know that you’re auditioning?” asked the judge.
“Yes.” I nodded.
“Sign here then.” She handed me a contract.
I read through the contract. It was to be a trainee.
I signed it.
“Do you have your parents number?” asked one of the judges.
“Here.” she handed me her cellphone.
I pressed in dad’s cell, hoping that it was dad that would pick up and mom wasn’t around.
“Hello?” I heard dad’s voice.
“Dad.” I spoke in Vietnamese. “The judges want to talk to you.” I handed the phone to the judge that could speak English.
“Hello? Mr. Le. Your daughter has made it pass the auditions. We need your authorization that she can go and train in Korea.” he said, “Alright. She’s leaving tomorrow about 4 am to California for the last audition.”
“Congratulations. You’re now a SM Trainee.” He smiled and shook my hand. “There’s just one last audition. After you come to Korea. What school do you go to now?”
“XXXX High School.” I answered.
“Alright. When you come to Korea, You will go to Korea Kent foreign academy. You’ll also be going to SM academy.” he told me.
“Do you have a passport?” she asked.
“No.” I shook my head.
“This is the last batch of people auditioning. So just wait a little and we’ll bring you to get your passport.” he told me.
“Alright. Thank you.” I smiled and headed out into the ballroom where Amanda was waiting bored.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“How was it?” asked Amanda.

“I did it. I just have one more audition to pass. Holy crap. This one was hard. And just imagine how hard the next one is.” I freaked. “And. We need to wait a little. I need to get my visa and passport done.”

“You don’t have one?” Amanda asked.

“Nope.” I smiled.

“Alright. Ready?” the male judge came up from behind and asked me, “Just follow our car.”

I saw there were three other people who made it pass.

I nodded and went out to Amanda’s car and followed them downtown.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I sat on the chair. Filling out the papers to get my visa and passport done.
“Ok. Now we just need to take your picture.” the lady told me.
I went to stand where she told me to stand. I gave a small smile and the picture was taken
It wasn’t long before my visa was done and passport was taken care of.
“Again. I’ll pay for dinner.” I smiled as we headed out and thanked the judges.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We walked into apple bees and ordered. I ordered the crispy orange bowl and Amanda ordered an oriental wrap and then we shared the appetitzier sampler.

“So. How do you feel about making it into the entertainment?” asked Amanda.
“Well… I’m really nervous. The final audition is in Korea…” I ate the breaded chicken

“I’m gonna miss you!!” Amanda exclaimed.

“I’ll miss you too. But then after I debut, you’ll be able to see me on the computer!” I assured her.

“Yeah. True. But then. What will I do during the time before you debut?” she asked.

“Just email me. I’ll reply back when I get on the computer… if I get one. Heh.” I smiled.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Amanda drove home and it was already 9 pm.
“Did you guys eat already?” asked Amanda’s mom.
“Yup.” I smiled and nodded.
“Tell me.” she sat us down. “How was it? You guys left at 11 and then you came back at 9?”
“Well… When we got there, I was number 5593. So… there were a lot of people auditioning. I got held back and yeah… I was told that I made it. Then we had to go downtown cause I had to fill out my visa. And then tomorrow.. 4 in the morning. I need to catch a plane at Humphrey terminal. I’m going to down to California for the second round. And then Korea for the final round.” I answered.
“Congrats!!” She gave me a hug. “I guess you’d better start packing.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I headed up to my shared room with Amanda and looked at my stuff. I realized that I didn’t have a suitcase… all I had was my backpack.

“Here. You can have my suitcase.” Amanda pulled out her red suitcase.

“Heh. You sure? You’ve given me a lot of things already.” I said.

“Yes. I’m sure.” Amanda handed me her suitcase, “Now. To help you pack.”

I shook my head as Amanda opened her closet as we started separating our clothes.

“Is this yours or mine?” she asked, holding up a pink tank top.

“… It could go either way. You keep it.” I smiled.

We were basically the same size almost in tops.

I was small in jean sizes.

“Is that everything?” she asked.

“It should be…” I looked around, “Mp3. Check. Clothes. Check. Shoes. Check. Camera. Check.”

“We should take pictures together tomorrow.” Amanda suggested.

“Yeah.” I nodded. “Cayla’s not talking still… right?”

“Yeah… oh well… I’ll tell her that you left.” Amanda said.

“K. Thanks. Tell them all I said bye.” I smiled.

“I will. Now let’s get some sleep.” Amanda took a towel and headed to the bathroom.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I rolled fell off the bed.

“Ow.” was the first thing that came out of my mouth as I pulled my self up from the ground.

“STEPHANIE!! COME HERE!” I heard Amanda’s mom calling my name.

I threw on an over size t-shirt and walked down, seeing the time was noon.

“We bought you a gift for making it into an entertainment.” Amanda’s dad said and lifted up a box.

“It’s too much. You guys have done a lot of things for me. Thank you.” I smiled, bowing, being a habit of mine.

“It’s ok. Open it.” Amanda’s mom pushed the box over to me.

I started to open it, and then got stuck when I couldn’t get the front.

They all started to laugh as Amanda showed me to push down on the handle and then lift.

I shook my head and did that.

Inside was a Vaio laptop.

“Oh my god… Thank you!” I smiled and gave all three a hug.

“Like we said. It’s for a congratulation gift. We all wish you luck.” Amanda’s mom said.

“Thanks.” I smiled.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I repacked my laptop into my suitcase and looked at the clock. It was midnight and about time for us to head down to the airport.
I sat in the back with Amanda and we talked the whole time about what I was going to do.
“I told you Amanda!! I’ll be going to Cali and then to Korea!” I smiled, “I think my dad is meeting us there for a little bit.”
“That’ll be good.” Amanda laughed.
We made it to the airport at 2 in the morning and we pulled my suitcase off the back and headed into the terminal.
I had all my documents that I needed. I looked around and saw the judges from earlier sitting and waiting for two more people, besides me. I looked around more to see if dad came.
I didn’t see him.
“I’ll check in with the judge first. And then I’ll come and talk.” I told Amanda.
I went over the two judges.
“Ready?” they asked me.
“Yeah.” I nodded.
“Go and talk to your family for a little bit. We just need two more people to show up.” the male judge said.
“Alright.” I walked over to Amanda still holding my luggage.
“So… Who are you guys waiting for you?” asked Amanda.
“We’re waiting for two more people until we check in at the front and I wanted to see if my dad was going to show up…” I looked around still.
It wasn’t long before I saw a middle height man walk in with a leather coat on.
“Dad!” I exclaimed and ran over to hug him.
He returned the hug.
“Congrats. But I wish that your mom would know about this.” Dad told me.
“Tell her when I debut.” I smiled.
“Alright. Remember to keep in touch.” Dad smiled.
“Stephanie! It’s time!” I heard a judge call me
“I gotta go. Bye dad! I’ll miss you!” I hugged him and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
I hugged Amanda and her family and grabbed my suitcase and headed over the judge.
“Let’s go.” I waved my goodbyes to my family and friends.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In Korea
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We followed him into a much larger building that was in Hangul.
“You all will be going to this school. You will only have 4 hours of classes.” SM explained to us. Evan. The boy dorms are over there. Jung-ssi will bring you over there. The girl dorms are over there.” He pointed to the opposite said, “Choi-ssi will bring you there. Have a good night. Tomorrow. Come to SM academy for your schedules.” SM left.
We followed Choi-ssi to the girls dorm as she spoke in Korean the whole time. Showing us what was on each floor.
We made it to a room but it wasn’t that big. One bathroom. Two closest. One bunk bed. Two desks.
“That will be the uniform you will be wearing. School starts at 7 ends at 11 for you girls. If you need anything else. My office is the first door on the right once you come into the girl’s dorm.” Choi-ssi told us.
“Kamsahamida.” We thanked her and bowed.
“Well… Best get to know each other?” Danielle spoke in English.
“Talk in Korean!” I laughed in Korean.
“Ne.” she replied. “Top bunk!”
“Alright. Right closet.” I went over to the right side of the room and started to hang up my clothes and I pulled out my laptop, camera, and mp3 player.
“Wow. You have a lot of things.” Danielle eyed my stuff, also taking out her own things.
“Cool what kind of Laptop?” I asked.
“Apple.” She answered. “You?”
“Vaio.” I replied.
“Come on. We have to wake up in 8 hours. I’m gonna shower and get some sleep.” I told her. Grabbing some clothes, a towel and then headed into the bathroom to shower.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Next day.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was given all the books that I needed and went to each class.
Wow. Going to school in a language you don’t know is… hard…
Danielle was only in 2 of my 4 classes. Korean lit and Science.
As Choi-ssi said last night. Class ended for us at 11 as we were suppose to meet SM at noon.
I was still a little time mixed up and I checked my laptop for any emails but I didn’t reply to them, Danielle and I ran out of our dorms and headed over to SM building, to meet up with LSM.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A year and a half later.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was in the advance dance classes and I was in advance voice classes. It was time for me to work out. Dance classes weren’t enough to keep my weight under 100.
“So. What are you doing today? Didn’t you say you don’t have class today?” asked Amanda.
“I don’t have cause it’s Saturday. But I still have to work out. Just to keep my weight down.” I laughed.
“Dude! You’re already stick skinny!! How much skinnier do you want to get?!” Amanda yelled.
“I’m not stick skinny!! I’m only 95 pounds. I’ve gain 3 pounds after being here for a year.” I argued back.
“How much are you going down to?” asked Amanda.
“Well. SM has enrolled me in modeling classes. And I’ve been offered a minor role in a drama. And I need to lose some weight so I can look nice in the clothes.” I said.
“You’re going to end up anorexic.” Amanda slapped her forehead.
“No I’m not. I’ll still be eating. Geez.” I rolled my eyes.
I looked over the script that I was given, incase I wanted to do the film.
“AMANDA!! I’M HERE!!” I heard a familiar voice through the speakers.
“CAYLA!!” Amanda got off her bed and went to hug the taller girl.
“Who are you talking to?” Cayla asked.
“Stephanie! She’s in Korea right now.” Amanda pulled Cayla onto the bed.
“Hey.” I waved.
“Wow. Stephanie. Is that you? I thought you left cause you were mad at me. I thought you were being drastic.” Cayla waved.
“Yeah. Actually. I left cause I made it into an entertainment. So… yeah… how’s high school?” I asked.
“Boring.” She laughed, “How’s Korea?”
“Where I am. Tiring.” I answered.
I got up while Amanda started saying, “She’s trying to lose weight for a acting role.”
“WHAT!? Steph! You’re already skinny!! You don’t need to lose weight!” argued Cayla.
“Well… I kinda have to if I want the role. I changed into sweat pants and a tank top.
“How much do you weight right now?” Cayla asked.
“Last time I checked, two weeks ago. 95 pounds. I gain 3 pounds from when I moved.” I answered.
“That’s less then me!” Cayla said, “I’m like 120.”
“Yeah… But I have to fit into the clothes that they’ve already designed.” I answered, drinking some ice water.
“But… You’re going to be too skinny!” Cayla exclaimed.
“No I’m not. Besides. I really want this role!” I smiled.
“Are you going to regain the weight?” asked Amanda.
“Depends.” I answered.
“You’d better! You’re going to be too skinny!” Cayla exclaimed.
“Yeah Yeah. Hey guys. I gotta go. My teacher is waiting for me. I have to go and work out now.” I shut off my laptop and headed over to SM academy, meeting up with my dance teacher.
“Are you ready?” asked Songsaengnim.
“Yeah.” I answered, following Songsaengnim into his car as he drove me out to a dumpling shop.
“I thought I was working out. Not eating.” I was confused.
“You’re going to run around this shop while I eat.” Songsaengnim answered.
“Ohh…. How long am I doing this?” I asked.
“Until the sun sets.” Songsaengnim answered, “Get started. One plate of dumplings please!”
I shook my head and started running around the dumpling shop.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
8 o’ clock.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The sun finally started to set and I slowly came to a stop at the front of the dumpling shop where songsaengnim was sitting and writing something down.
“Good. Are you hungry?” asked Songsaengnim.
“Yes but I’m trying to lose weight for the role, songsaengnim.” I answered.
“A small plate of dumplings please!” Songsaengnim ordered.
“Kamsahamida. “ I thanked Songsaengnim, sitting down across from him.
My legs and arms were like jello.
“Tomorrow you will be working out again. We’ll make it more intense, alright.” The dumplings came.
“Kamsahamnida.” I thanked the waiter.
I ate the dumplings slowly and then got in Songsaengnim’s car in he drove me back to SM academy where I walked back to my dorm.
I turned on my laptop to see if anyone was on. I saw that Jessica was on.
She sent me a webcam chat. I clicked accept and waited for the video to load.
“STEPH!” Jesscia yelled.
“Hey cuz. You don’t need to yell.” I smiled, leaving the screen for a little bit to grab a wet towel.
“Where have you been? I thought you said you were going to be on like an hour ago.” Jessica interrogated me.
“I was working out. Ran around a dumpling shop for… 7 hours.” I cleaned my face and drank some water.
“Why do you need to work out?” asked Jessica.
“For an acting role. I’ve been offered one.” I smiled.
“Hey Jessica. Who are you talking to?” I heard Angie and Thao coming over.
“Stephanie. She just got back from working out.” Jessica answered. She moved her laptop back so that all three people would fit onto the screen.
“Hey guys.” I smiled, drinking more water and cleaning my face of the sweat.
“Why are you working out? You’re already so skinny?” Angie asked me.
“I’ve been offered an acting role. So. I need to lose some weight to fit into the outfits.” I answered.
“Why?” Thao asked.
“… Cause I want to take the role…” I answered.
“Why do you have to take the role?” asked Thao.
“Ai ya! Why do you have to ask that. She just wants to try for the role!” Angie yelled in Vietnamese at Thao, “How much do you need to lose?”
“Umm… about 8-10 pounds.” I answered.
“Have you accepted the role?” asked Jessica.
“Yeah. The clothes are too small for me. So… yeah. I need to lose some weight.” I answered.
“How much do you weight now?” asked Angie.
“95 pounds.” I answered.
“Oh my god. You are like. Anorexic.” Thao said.
“Why are you being mean?” asked Angie.
“I’m not anorexic. I just need to lose weight for the role. It’s a minor role.” I answered.
“What’s the name of the drama?” asked Angie.
“Under the canopy of Love. It’s a remake of the Hong Kong one.” I answered.
“I love that drama. Which one are you?” asked Angie.
“I’m the youngest sister of the main girl.” I answered.
“That’s cool!” Angie smiled.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One year later.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was already a famous actress after my role in my first Drama. I was also doing modeling for new clothes trends.
The weight that I lost last year, never got it back, oh well…
I sat in front of my computer, doing homework. Being glad that I didn’t have classes at the academy tomorrow.
“STEPH!” I looked up to see Amanda holding a magazine.
“What are you reading?” I asked.
“I don’t know. But YOU’RE PICTURE IS IN HERE! You’re so pretty!!” Amanda held up a picture of me wearing a designer dress in a teen magazine.
“Haha. I wore that dress to advertise for Prom, I think it was. The dress was really pretty. And god it was small too!” I laughed.
“Did you have to lose weight to wear it?” Amanda asked.
“No.” I smiled.
“How much do you weigh now?” she asked.
“84 pounds.” I answered.
“You need to eat!” She yelled at me.
“I do eat!! I just can’t gain weight cause I’m already skipping some meals to study for tests and then there’s dance classes.” I argued back.
“But really though. Why did this magazine use you as a model?” Amanda asked.
“Well. The magazine is Elle right? I sometimes model for Elle Korea. They wanted some girls to promote an cute dress and Asian person could wear. So… Yeah. They talked to Elle Korea and then Elle Korea picked some models do wear the dress.” I answered, looking at my maths homework.
“When do you graduate?” asked Amanda.
“Next year.” I answered, “I only have 4 classes to take so… yeah. I’m already looking into the university I’m going to anyways.”
“Which one?” asked Amanda.
“Myongji University. Good school.” I answered.
“Are you paying for it?” asked Amanda.
“No. My boss is.” I answered.
“That’s nice of him.” Amanda smiled.
“He’s not doing it for free… I’m already in debt with him.” I answered.
“When are you going to pay him back?” she asked.
“When I debut. If we’re big, We’ll make a lot of money fast. So… yeah… the debt will be paid back easily. And then I’ll also get money for my self to spend and also to spend money for my family.” I smiled.
One year later.
“Danielle!” I woke her up. It was the weekend and we had late classes at the academy.
“Leave me alone! My classes aren’t until 2!” She rolled over.
“It’s 1.” I told her.
“AISH!” she jumped out of bed and ran into the bathroom to shower quickly.
“Nice Steph.” Amanda said behind me.
“Yeah. Danielle doesn’t like to wake up.” I laughed.
“So. When are your classes?” Amanda asked me.
“30 minutes. Mine start earlier then Danielle’s. Shouldn’t you be in bed?” I asked Amanda.
She was in her Senior year of High school.
“Nope. Senior skip day.” she answered.
“Hehe. Nice. Hey. I gotta go. I’m gonna be late. See ya.” I smiled.
I put my water bottle and extra clothes into my bag, shut off my laptop and ended out to SM Academy.
I was practicing a dance in the studio. I’ve been in the academy for 4 years… Am I going to go anywhere?? Only a model and actress?
“Stephanie. Soo Man hyung wants to see you.” Songsaengnim poked his head into the practice room.
“Ok.” I nodded and headed up to SM’s office and knocked, waiting for the call to go in.
“Can you sing a quick song for me?” asked SM.
“Umm… Ne…” What song?! “Into the new world by SNSD.”
I started off with the chorus and went to the middle before SM cut me off.
“Alright. Go into that room and wait.” SM pointed to a door.
I bowed and headed into the room he pointed to.
