Chapter 29

Moving On

Six months.

He had been gone six months, Myolie thought. She stared at her desktop calendar and clicked on the send button, hoping that he would read it even though the chance was slim. Every two weeks, she emailed him regarding the function of ‘Essence’ and an recollection of what was going on at the Lau’s household but she never get any respond. If it wasn’t for his monthly call to both Michelle and Linda, Myolie thought he probably disappeared from the face of the earth.

What a jerk! She thought angrily. An irresponsible jerk. Leaving without a word. Didn’t he realize that people were worried about him? Didn’t he realize that he wasn’t the only one who lives were changed drastically?

Suddenly she heard the commotion outside. What now? Ever since Ron Ng took partly control of ‘Essence’, he had sent Chris Lai as his representative to oversee his work in ‘Essence’. God, that man was a pain in the neck. He was like a soldier who followed Ron Ng’s command to the point. He had to check every single account in ‘Essence’ and if he sensed something amiss, he would come bother her…as if she didn’t have a hundred and one things to do everyday.

“I need to see Miss Wu.”

Myolie sighed. There goes Chris…again.

“I’m sorry but Miss Wu is busy now.” Myolie could hear Moses’ voice through the door.

“I need to see her.” Chris sounded piss. Myolie started to get up to settle this when she heard Moses threatening voice.

“She will see you when she is available. She is not your subordinate on call twenty-four hours a day. Even an office boy had the right to his time; especially Miss Wu is your boss. So I suggest you get your no-good butt back over to your office and wait for her to call you. Understood, sir?”

There was a moment of silent before Chris answered. “I will file a complaint. Your attitude is despicable.” He uttered but he turned back toward his room and shut the door.

“Oh Moses…” Myolie opened the door and grabbed his face in her palms. “You are wonderful. How can I ever manage without you?”

He grinned foolishly. “I may not type forty words per minute but I can deal with a shoe-shiner like him anytime.”

“You are the best.” Myolie smiled as they entered her office. “I thought you will be gone by now.”

“Oh yeah…I got to run.”

Myolie smiled. “Tell Maddie I say happy birthday.”

Moses nodded but he was already out the door. She smiled softly and started packing for the day. When Moses knocked and poked his head in again. “Hey, if that shoe-shiner is still bothering you, tell him I once choke a man with my bare hands.”

Myolie grinned. “Did you really?”

Moses shrugged. “He will never know, would he?”

Myolie laughed. “Go!”

Moses grinned and left.

With a smile on her face, she got ready to leave. Taking a glance at her watch, she realized she had two hours to get ready…

…for her date tonight.

***

The lights flashed, blinding his eyes from his surrounding but he doubted he could see from the dark theme tonight. He sat down near the counter across from the dance floor.

“Refill?” The bartender, who was tattooed from head to toe, asked in a rough voice.

“No, thanks.” He said as he continued to stare at the crowd dancing wildly on the dance floor. However, his eyes were trained on one particular woman. He observed her, dancing all over the tall dark guy with golden-highlighted hair. He watched as the man placed his hand on her hip and started moving his hip against her. His hand gripped tighter around his glass of drink unintentionally. He continued to watch through his glasses as the man pressed his cheek against the woman and whispered something to her ear. She giggled in response and nodded.

He watched as they walked away from the crowd and disappeared through the backdoor exit.

He followed.

He passed the crowd, rushed toward the backdoor and burst into the dark alley. With the sound of grunting and moaning echoing down the dark alley, he walked toward the sound. His footstep corresponded with those sounds as well as the screeching of rats and the dripping water of pipelines.

He stopped, standing still in the spot as he watched the scene unfold before him. The man he saw at the club was on top of her with his face buried on her bare shoulder and her long smooth legs were wrapped around his waist.

“Sorry to interrupt…” Steven looked at the engaged two. His eyes fixed on the woman. “After I finish what I have to say, I will leave you two to continue your business.” He cleared his suddenly tightened throat. “It’s not working.” He stared at the woman with long dark purple hair and smoking black eyes along with purple lips. “You are just hurting yourself. I won’t stop.” He continued to look into her eyes to get his message across before he turned and left.

“What the f…” The man who called himself Tex stood up, staring after the man in an ironed white shirt and pant. “What the hell was that all about?” He exclaimed in anger for the interruption.

Linda looked sadly at Steven’s disappearing figure as she stood up. She sighed and turned to leave when Tex grabbed her and pulled her into his arm. “Hey, pretty, we aren’t finish yet.” He tried to kiss her when Linda brought her three inches heel down harshly onto his foot and pulled her knee up, hitting all men’s worst nightmare. She didn’t even wait to see him fall onto the ground, whimpering in pain. She turned and walked into the darkness, in the direct opposite path of Steven.

Yet, her thought was never far from the man on the opposite end.

***

Meanwhile, across town, Myolie had just finished putting on her earrings when the doorbell rang. She checked herself once more in front of the mirror before she went to open the door. The man standing at the doorway had a handsome smile on his face and a bouquet of red roses on hand. He was in an expensive tailored black suit with a gold watch and a gold ring as accessories.

“Good evening, Myolie, you look beautiful tonight.” He said politely and handed her the roses.

“Thank you.” She accepted the flower gracefully. “They are beautiful. Let me go get a vase for them.” As Myolie went to the kitchen, he stood patiently waiting for her.

“All done.” She said cheerfully. “Let’s go.”

“Ready?” He held up his arm as she took it.

“Yes.” She smiled at him beautifully when he led her outside.

The man in the handsome black suit escorted the beautiful woman in the dark red dress into the waiting limo. He held the door open for her as Myolie slowly climbed into the luxurious seat. He followed in after her and spoke into the intercom for the drive to start the ride.

As the car went into motion, she watched as he popped open a bottle of champagne and poured it into two crystal glasses. “Here…” He handed her one and slightly touched it toward her glass before taking a sip out of it. “How was work today?”

“As usual.” She took a sip from her glass and relaxed herself by leaning backward toward the soft cushion. “I don’t want to bore you to death. I’m sure your life is much more exciting than mine, Kevin. Did you take over some huge industry while I was buried in my work today?”

Kevin chuckled deeply. He realized from the first time they became an acquaintance over a business meeting that he liked her. Being the top hundredth wealthiest man on earth oil tycoon Edward Cheng’s son was never an easy job to him, especially when everyone was intimidated by his father’s power and wealth. Myolie was the very few people who saw the man beneath the suit and title. He enjoyed her company and most importantly, she was the first person that could make him laugh so freely after the tragedy that happened to him, two years ago. She always managed to make a joke out of his wealth and power and put a smile on his face.

“Where are you taking me today? Italy for dinner or Paris on a boat ride?” Myolie said jokingly.

Kevin laughed. “Just a simple restaurant called ‘La Amor’ in Hong Kong. I hope you are not too disappointed that I didn’t take you to another country. It is my pilot’s day off.” He winked at her.

Myolie laughed. She really enjoy being in Kevin’s company. He was a really sweet guy underneath all those polish and wealth. She was glad to know the real him. Lately, they had been spending more and more time together but it wasn’t anything romantic. Yes, they did went to Rome one time for a business trip since Kevin was one of the biggest client in ‘Essence’ and they did had a very romantic dinner together, but there was nothing romantic between them. She like spending time with Kevin but she never thought of anything more…especially not the reason why she never considered Kevin as more than a friend…

***

“Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to you! Happy Birthday to Maddie! Happy Birthday to you!!!” Everyone sang happily as Maddie jumped up and down in joy. She almost felt like this was a dream because everything she ever wished for came true. She got to live with her daddy now as well as Aunty, Selena and little Ethan. Everyone she loved was here today to celebrate her birthday.

“Make a wish, sweetheart.” Her daddy whispered beside her.

She was so happy and everything seemed to be perfect.

Except for one thing. She quickly closed her eyes and made a wish. When she finished, she opened her eyes wide and blew all the candles at once. “Cake time!” She screamed as all her friends in school started gathering around the delicious chocolate cake.

“She looked very happy today.” Moses walked over to the refreshment stand with Bernice. “Thank you for helping out with the decoration. She loves the princess theme.” Moses said as he looked around the mansion, lighted up in beautiful surreal colors, like a midnight castle. He looked at Maddie in a beautiful princess costume and all her friends as royalty. Dressed as the king, Moses smiled at Bernice who had on a gorgeous midnight blue gown. He couldn’t help but think of her as the queen.

Ever since Moses got Maddie back and found out Bernice was the doctor that saved his life, he had been trying to analyze the feeling he had for her. She was someone special. Her generosity truly amazed Moses. Who would help out a guy like him…especially after that night? He still couldn’t remember what exactly happened that night but he was positive that Bernice had to be a very unique lady to help him out after that incident. His feeling for her was too complex. Was it gratitude, appreciation, or was it something more? He could see the love shining out of her eyes when she looked at Maddie. He realized that he could really fell for this woman. She could very much be the one. Yet, how could he offer her anything if he had nothing to offer. He was only a man who just started to begin his life again and he had his daughter to consider. What really can a man like him offer a successful beautiful lady like Bernice?

Why the hell were you thinking so far ahead, Moses? Bernice didn’t come to see you. She came to see Maddie. She will never even consider you, so what are you thinking so hard about? She only saw you as a friend, or maybe just Maddie’s father. Stop thinking about it!

Yet, he couldn’t when he saw the mesmerizing smile on her face as she watched his daughter.

Oh boy. He was in trouble.

***

“Bosco?...”

He watched his brother.

Nothing.

There was nothing in Bosco’s eyes that signified he heard him. “Bosco…Can you hear me?” His voice cracked. “I beat Damien Lau. He is dead. He is gone!” He started shaking Bosco, hoping he would suddenly talk to him. Ron got ‘Essence’. He fulfilled his father’s life long dream. He got back what was supposed to be theirs. Then why won’t Bosco wake up? Why was he still staring into blank space talking to himself? The voice should be gone. Bosco should be back and celebrating with him. However, no matter how many time he told him or how many doctors he brought here for the last six months…Nothing. “Talk to me, Bosco!” He continued to shake Bosco but there was no respond. “Bosco!”

“Wake up!” Ron held onto Bosco’s limped body. “You are supposed to be back. You are supposed to be better. Wake up!” He started crying because his little brother was gone. For the past six months, he got worst and worst until he couldn’t response to anything anymore. Bosco was gone, into his own world. His eyes looked glossy and tormented. No one knew whether he could hear them any longer. He rarely moved on his own anymore. Confining to his bed most of the time except when the nurses wheeled him outside to get fresh air. Nothing that was surrounding him penetrated him anymore.

He was completely gone.

In the doorway, Nancy watched helplessly in tears as Ron cried in his brother’s arm.

It was too late.

The damage was done.

Now, it was time to suffer the consequences.

***

How could that man be so dense? And he called himself a lawyer? What kind of I’m not interested doesn’t he understand? When a woman threw herself at another man, you would think he got the picture…but no! Linda angrily jabbed the cigarette on the glass container. He must be out of his mind to dump his doctor girlfriend for her. What the hell was he thinking?

The doorbell rang.

Linda rolled her eyes. Not again.

She went over to the door and peeked through the hole.

Isn’t he ever going to give up?

She slammed the door opened. “Do you want me to put a restraining order on you? You may be a lawyer but I know law, too! You can’t keep following me and stalking me!” She yelled at him in anger.

Steven smiled at her. “What do you think of curry chicken with beans?”

Linda was taken back by the fact that he knew her favorite dish. “What about it?” She said with an edge to her voice.

“I’m cooking tonight.” He said carelessly and walked toward the kitchen like he was at home. Linda watched in surprise with a side of irritation as Steven started humming while preparing the meal.

She was not going to let him wormed his way inside her. She had to get rid of him. Suddenly an idea came to her mind. She smiled to herself for thinking up such a notion. While Steven was busy in the kitchen, Linda walked into her bedroom…

***

He will melt her down soon. He smiled as he sliced the chicken. He knew what she was trying to do but he wasn’t going to give up. He will show her what she had been thinking was wrong. He was so happy when Linda finally woke up. For the first few weeks, she was fine, maybe a little tired but she enjoyed his company. Every time he visited, they spent hours talking…until one day she simply stopped talking to him. She refused to give him an explanation and she turned more wild and out of control every time he saw her. He didn’t understand at first but he finally figure out what she was trying to do. He will see to it that it won’t happen. Steven was never a guy that gave up so easily whether it was in a court case or in love.

“Need any help?”

Steven was shock speechless as Linda wrapped her arms around his waist while placing her head on his shoulder. He slowly turned his face toward her. She was wearing a see-through black gown that hid nothing and when she pressed against him, he could felt everything.

“Linda?...”

Her lips brushed his ear and traced down to his jaw. Meanwhile, her hands move down his shirt. “Steven…” She sighed temptingly into his ears. “I’m not hungry…yet. Come with me. I have something to show you.” Pulling his hands, she led him into her bedroom.

Letting his hand go, Linda lazily slid down onto her bed. “Come…” She patted the spot next to her with a devilishly smile. “Isn’t this what you want?” She laughed like a siren.

Slowly, Steven walked over to her and sat down next to her. “Why?” He asked her softly.

She laughed. “Why? Is this what all men wanted? If going to bed with you, can stop you from bothering me again, why not?”

He looked at her for awhile before he gently kissed her on the lips. Linda pulled him closer and deepened the kiss but he pulled away. “You know that this is not going to change anything. I told you. I won’t give up.” He smiled and gently stroked her hair. “Why can’t you stop hurting yourself, Linda? I could make you happy.” He looked at her so softly, so lovingly, it was pain striking to watch. “I love you.” He watched as the façade on Linda’s face fell. He could see the conflicts in her eyes.

“Dinner will be ready in a few minutes.” He smiled and pecked her on the lips before he left her.
Linda was left staring at the doorway he just disappeared.

I know, she thought. I know you can make me very happy. I know you are the one for me. I would love to return your love, Steven. I know for the rest of my life, I could only love you…

But you didn’t realize one thing, Steven.

I will ruin your life.
