“Hi, I’m Jaebum.” Jaebum clenched his fist in his pocket and said. He stared at the girl standing before him. He could see her blink behind her sunglasses. She hesitated before taking them off.
She frowned as she studied the guy standing before her. He looked familiar, but not enough for her to remember. She tapped her lips with the edge of sunglasses.
“Call me Christina.” She finally extended a hand and smiled warmly to him. Jaebum smiled too. He took his right hand out from his pocket and shook it firmly. He let out a relieved sigh and smiled again when she looked at him questioningly.
“So uh…” Jaebum searched his brain for something smart to say. He wacked himself mentally as he realized he had prepared nothing witty. “You like to dance?” He blurted.
Christina looked at him, “Yeah. Why, you too?”
Jaebum nodded. Finally he had something to say.
“I was at the, umm, LA B-Boy competition too.” He stammered. Christina raised an eyebrow and nodded. She narrowed her eyes and tried to search for him in her memories.
“The one spinning so fast that was cleaning the floor?” Christina lifted the corner of her lips and smiled. Jaebum scratched his head in embarrassment and nodded. “Right. You were good.” She showed him a thumb up and looked around them.
“Umm, are you busy?” Jaebum tried again to start a conversation. Christina looked at her watch, “I’m waiting for my boy friend.” She smiled a small smile.
Jaebum frowned, “Ok. But I thought you lived in Boston?”
“I mean, they said so during the competition.” Jaebum quickly added, seeing the look of confusion in the girl’s face. Christina nodded slowly.
“Ok. But I have to run.” Christina said after flipping her phone shut and told Jaebum. He noticed it was the newest Samsung Anycall. “Here’s my card, contact me if you need anything.” Christina smiled as she waved and took off in small steps. Jaebum watched her run into the arms of a tall guy. Both of them slipped into a taxi. Jaebum caught a glimpse of her, and him, when the taxi drove by him.
That man was handsome.
Jaebum pursed his lips after the taxi had gone and looked down at the silver card in his hand.
‘{M.E} New York
Christina Heo Soomi’
That was the title.

So Jaebum fell even deeper into it. He was on the internet everyday, searching for more information. Maybe lady luck was on his side, and so they may be why he stumbled upon her personal blog. Since it was private, he got his good friend to hack into it for him. He knew what he’s doing was wrong, but he can’t help himself.
He felt stalkerish. But, who the hell cares.
His fingers scrolled down with the mouse, and his eyes scanned over the words. He had decided to start reading from the oldest post to the newest.
‘I think a man is the most romantic when he writes plays the song he wrote and composed himself for a girl.’
‘If I could give something up just for Taec to get into JYP, I’d give up everything.’
Jaebum bit his lips. So she thought it was romantic of a guy who plays the piano, and her boyfriend’s name is Ok Taecyeon. And from her lastest entry, this Ok Taecyeon is already a JYP trainee. Jaebum licked his lips and typed ‘JYP auditions’ into the search box.
His eyes brightened as he read he words he found. There is going to be an audition at LA the following weekend.
He must get to work then.
-
“Oppa.” Christina hugged Taecyeon from behind and buried her face into the back of his shirt. Taecyeon smiled and took her small hand in his own large ones. He shook his head and turned around. Christina stared up at him with her violet eyes and smiled again.
“Sushi must be good.” Taecyeon touched her forehead with his own and instructed Christina. Christina pouted as she heard that nickname.
“I hate that nickname.”
Taecyeon took her face in his hands and kissed the tip of her nose lightly. Christina giggled lightly and hugged Taecyeon.
“You must remember to come back and visit if you ever debut.” Christina stared at him deep in the eyes and said. “And you must remember me, even if you have thousands of fan girls watching your every move.”
Taecyeon nodded for both questions before pulling her into a hug again.
“I’ll miss you honey.”
“I will too.”
-
“You guys will be holding a Showcase concert in a few days.” Mr Lee, the producer of their reality show told the guys sitting the room. Each of the guys nodded and turned to each other to discuss what they were going to perform. Jay looked around the room, spotting Taecyeon. He walked over and sat beside him, watching the taller guy frown at his mobile phone.
“Taec, whaddup.” Jay punched him lightly on the shoulder. Taec shook his head and slipped the phone back into his pocket.
“Nothing.” He got up and replied easily, staring into the mirror of the dance studio and stretched. Jay looked at him and shrugged. Fine. If he had something on his mind right before the Showcase, be it. It wasn’t in his territory, so why should he even care. Jay shook his head and got up to join the roomful of guys who were grooving to Usher’s Yeah techno mix. He smiled.

Jaebum’s fingers moved over the keyboard, and the only sound in the whole dorm was of him typing on his laptop. He scrolled down the page he was looking at silently. He begged every word to be true.
‘It’s been almost half a decade since taec and I started, and I was fifteen then. I didn’t know what love was, and I trusted that he had shown me everything a girl could want in her life. I thought he was my fairy tale prince charming.’
‘But three years ago, he was chosen to be one of the trainee’s of JYP Entertainment. When he left, he told me he’ll call me every other day, email me, even write letters to me so I could keep it. But what happened?’
‘Taecyeon changed. He wasn’t the patient but humorous man I once fell for when I was fifteen. Hell, he was even more different than the rash boy I known since I was eight. He became inpatient. He became prudent. He became a monster.’
‘Every time I call him, he would tell me he was busy and will call me back. I believed him and waited for his calls every night. Yet he never called me back even though he promised. I couldn’t even get enough sleep every night because of how worried I was. Was he sick? Was Uncle JYP not giving him enough spare time? Was he stressed out? I didn’t know, so I had to ask.’
‘I called uncle JYP the other day, and he told me everything was fine. The boys were getting ready for a showcase in a few days, but they don’t have any other schedule besides the usual dance and vocals class. JYP asked me what was wrong.’
‘What was I supposed to answer him? ‘Oh uncle! My boyfriend who is one of your pride and joy is practically killing me inside because he would never call me?’ or maybe ‘My boyfriend never has time for me anymore because of your stupid program!’ How could I saw this when I heard he wasn’t even busy?’
‘Am I so stupid just to think for once second he would suddenly transform back into the man I was infatuated with? I loved him dearly, with all my heart.’
‘But what did I get for loving him? An aching heart? I know he changed, his mindset, his thoughts, and I hate to admit this, but even his heart. He was the one who send me that rose on my fourteenth valentines day in this world, he was the one who played the piano and told me he loved me on my fifteenth birthday, and he was the one who made me think the most romantic thing a guy could do is play the piano for me with all his heart and dedicate it to me, but I will be the one who’ll end all of these after five years.’
‘It hurts me to even type this down. Ok Taecyeon, I used to love and treasure every bit of you. But I realized everything have to have an end for it.’
Jaebum’s lips mouthed the last few words silently.
‘It hurts to know that our love story has an end to it, but hell, every story has an end. Life is no fairytale. Peace and love, Christina.’
Jaebum bit his lips and looked at the man that was fast asleep at the bottom bunk at the opposite end of the room.
She had ended it with him.
-
“So now it’s time for their individual talents!” The MC announced into the microphone with energy. The crowd roared with happiness as the first performance started.
“Nervous?” Jaebum asked Taecyeon before his turn. Taecyeon nodded slightly as Nichkhun finished his solo performance.
Jaebum gave him a light punch on the shoulder, “All the best dude.”
Taecyeon nodded.
-
“Good luck.” Taecyeon said as Jaebum waited for the lights to dim so he could go on stage. He nodded and smiled timidly.
“And for out last individual performance of the night, Park Jaebeom!” The MC gestured for Jaebum to go on stage.
“Hey, I’m Jay, and I’ll be showing you guys two sides of me,” He smiled at the crowd, making girls go crazy, “First I’ll be b-boying.” He gestured for the sound technicians to start.
“Track five please.”
-
“Park Jaebum! Park Jaebum! Park Jaebum!” Jaebum heard the crowd chant his name as he finished off his dance with a freeze. He adjusted his shirt and walked over to the other side of the stage, where a white grand piano stood awaiting him.
He sat down and placed the microphone onto the mike stand, sitting down and placed his fingers over the monochrome keyboard.
“This song is for a girl who showed me love, even thought she didn’t know. She said the most romantic thing a man could do for her is to play the piano for her, even thought the guy who did so in the first place broke her heart.” Jaebum sighed softly, noticing Taecyeon stiffen in the shadows on the left of the stage, just behind the curtains.
“I might not have anything, and may not be rich enough to buy you everything. But we both have a passion for dancing, and it was our dream. You did nothing when your father wanted you to take over his company because you love him. But I achieved the dream for both of us, even though you may not know this.”
At that moment, he had forgotten the crowd gathering below the stage.
“I wrote this song for you, because that’s all I can give.”
Jaebum pressed down on the first key. No one watching now could tell that he had practiced day and night in secret for this moment. He just wanted to tell her that he could do something contrasting. He wrote this song for her, because that was all he could.
‘Even though I want to buy you a pretty necklace
Even though I want to take you out on a ride in a nice car
Even though I want to dress you in nice clothes
Even though I want to take you to nice places’
He poured his heart out. He couldn’t hear the crowd. All he knew was that he was telling everyone his true feelings. He wanted her to know.
‘This hand that I put inside my pocket grabs nothing
How can I get you
My position doesn't suit you
Regardless, can you stay by my side’
His mind was blank. He could only remember her face.
‘The only thing I can give is this song
All I have is this voice
Even if this makes you laugh
But I still sing
I hope you accept it’
‘I only have this song
I really have nothing but this voice
I don't know if this will make you laugh
But I still sing
I hope you accept it
I hope you accept it’
Jaebum opened his eyes slowly. He suddenly remembered he had a crowd watching him. He suddenly remembered that he had the whole nation behind the television looking at his live performance. He suddenly remembered the cameras that were on him.
He stood up slowly, forcing himself not to glance towards Taecyeon’s direction. He bowed stiffly and stood there bending ninety degrees until the lights dimmed.
The crowd was touched, he saw people wiping their tears.
Jaebum sighed as the stage turned dark and he heard the rest of the guys come onstage.
He knew he had confessed to her. He knew that he had sang everything from the bottom of his heart. He even knew that there was a slight chip on the paint of the piano.
But what he didn’t know was whether she had heard him or not.
-
Christina stood glued to the ground in front of the gigantic television screen in the Incheon airport. She had stood there for seven whole minutes with tears gushing down her pink cheeks, and yet no one stopped her.
Maybe they thought that she missed her boyfriend, maybe they thought that she was touched by the short looking boy’s words on the screen. Maybe they even thought she had something in her eyes.
But she knew better.
There was this boy whom she barely even registered when she first met him at the b-boy competition in 2004, and yet he remembered her.
She felt as if he knew her even better than she knew herself. She suddenly blinked and wiped the tears away from her violet eyes, the corners of her lips lifting slightly.
She had came to end it with Taecyeon, but someone had already done it for her.
And this guy loved her.
She smiled and walked away from the television screen.
She didn’t need to see Taecyeon anymore. She could return back to Boston and live her life off.
And when she’s eighty seven, she could sit in a rocking chair as ancient as herself, telling her life story to her grand children on how a fairy tale could not always have a happily-ever-after, and how fate could be twisted by just one single song.
-
‘You wrote me a song, because that’s all you can give me.’ Christina typed on her blog. This will be her last entry.
She turned her head and glanced at the clock.
‘And I’ll hold you a place in my heart for that. Love, 090109 Soomi’
