Chapter 12

The Meeting

"Kame, there's a call for you, I'm transferring the call over now." A female voice came from the phone in Kame's office. Shortly after, the phone started ringing and Kame picked it up, "Hello," he answered.

"Hello," a low deep voice echoed from the other side of the phone. Kame could recognize that voice anywhere, it was...

"Kuma... what can I do for you?" Kame sat up alert in his chair even though his voice showed no trace of this alertness.

"On the contrary, I am doing a favor for you. Your pretty little wife is with me right now and she's well taken care of."

"My wife? Maki?" What had she got to do with Kuma?

"I would assume she's your only wife, right?"

"What do you want with her?"

"I just wanted to see the girl who could replace Erika and whether she was up to it."

"Let go of me!" Maki shouted from Kuma's side.

"She has nothing to do with our feud. Let her go," Kame tensed at Maki's voice. He didn't want an innocent person to be drawn into his past, he didn't want history to repeat itself.

"Getting all worried, aren't we?" Kuma yawned lazily. He then clenched his fist tightly and said, "What about Erika, didn't you think of not getting her involved when you approached her? Now it's all too late Kame, your past is back to haunt you. I will never allow you to betray Erika, you owe her your life. You will spend your whole life in remorse and anguish. Not only Maki, but whoever you marry in future will suffer the same fate. She will disappear from the face of this Earth, just as Erika did."

"Hold on, Maki's not my wife, I've got nothing to do with her. It's all my father's idea, I have never accepted this marriage from the start. So let her go."

"Fine, I'll give you one more chance. I will leave Maki in one of my warehouses in the north, you should know where it is. I'll put a timebomb next to her and it will explode before midnight. If you save her by then, both of you are free to go. Otherwise, don't blame me for what happens to her." Kuma said and with that, he hung up on Kame.

Kame rushed out of his office after he had told the nurse at the front desk that he was going off early. He read the clock on the wall, it was 6 o'clock. Maki should be safe now, at least for 6 more hours... According to his knowledge of Kuma, this was no simple case, he needed to sort out his thoughts first, he needed to know what Kuma was thinking.

------

Kame ran to Tetsu's office. He paused in his tracks when he opened Tetsu's office door as Yamapi was standing there.

"Leave, I have something to discuss with Otosan," he told Yamapi.

"Is that something to do with Maki?" Tetsu asked.

"How did you know?" Kame asked. "Did Kuma call you as well?"

"No, Yamapi told me that Maki was kidnapped at the hospital." Tetsu answered. "So it was all Kuma's doing. What did he say to you."

"He asked me to save Maki from his warehouse before midnight" Kame answered.

"Before midnight?" Yamapi questioned.

"He has planted a timebomb beside her."

Yamapi's heart was beating furiously. He was anxious for Maki but he could not show this anxiety, especially not infront of Kame or Maki would be in trouble. Yamapi was the thorn in the flesh of both Kame and Mariko. He did not want to let them know that he was close to Maki, he tried to ask in a calm voice, "But why would he target Maki?"

Kame really did not want to answer him, but the situation was really serious, "Because of Erika, his daughter, he didn't want me to betray her so he targeted Maki since she's my wife. But what I know of Kuma, he wouldn't let rescue Maki so easily so I've come back to discuss with you." He directed the last sentence to Tetsu.

"You're right," Tetsu said. "So what do you think he's up to."

Yamapi thought through what Kame said and spoke, "He wouldn't gain from anything if he killed Maki. I suppose he only wants to test Kame. In that case, Kame would be the last person we would want to save Maki. But since he knows Maki is the daughter-in-law of Tetsu, it wouldn't be appropriate for any subordinate to rescue her."

"In that case, who can we send?" Tetsu asked.

"Me," Yamapi replied
