Chapter 14

Warmth in the Dark

She felt her head throbbing, something cold was dripping down her head and she breathed in the metallic smell of blood. But soon, she felt a pair of gentle hands picking her softly off the cold hard ground. In the darkness, that was the only source of warmth that managed to calm her. She could hear a familiar yet far voice calling out to her, giving her the strength to hold out.

Yamapi was afraid…… afraid to lose her. At this moment, he finally understood what those feelings of wanting to protect her were. He wasn’t sure when those feelings started. Was it slowly accumulated over all those times he spent with her or was it even sooner? Perhaps it started the very first time he met her, when she took care of him that very night. That night was the first time, since his mother died, someone treated him with so much care and concern. Whatever the reason was, he had somehow fallen in love with her.

-------

When they reached the hospital, Maki was immediately rushed into the emergency operation theatre. Yamapi waited restlessly outside the operation theatre. Every single second that passed by seems to be drawing life out of him. Finally after what seems like forever, the lights of the operation theatre was turned off. As the doctor walked out of the theatre, Yamapi rushed up to him and started questioning him on Maki’s situation.

"Is she alright?" Yamapi asked.

"She fell headfirst onto the ground hence her head suffered a great impact. Although her life is stable now, but there might be some repercussion. We are still not able to determine what type of repercussion at the moment, everything will have to wait till she wakes up."

Yamapi’s hands fell limp by his side. He blamed himself for her plight. Had he cushioned her fall she would not have had to suffer such a fate.

"Can I see her now?" Yamapi asked again.

"You may, after she’s wheeled into ward." The doctor replied.

As much as he hated to, he called Kame to tell him about Maki's condition. On hearing Maki's news, Kame rushed out of the house to the hospital.

------

Yamapi stayed by Maki's side. He held her hands in his, transferring warmth from his hands to hers. How he wished he could suffer in her place, to take all the pain from her.

"Maki, please wake up," he pleaded. He had never felt so helpless before. Seeing Maki's weak body before him, tears welled up in his eyes.

------

Maki felt the warmth from his hands. She willed herself to catch hold of that warmth, it was the only source of comfort for her. Just moments ago, when a horde of people gathered around her, she was fearful and unsettled. But now, she just wanted to retain that only source of comfort. Slowly, she felt the warmth leaving her hands, she hated herself for not being able to hold onto it.

------

Kame entered the room. Yamapi reluctantly let go off Maki’s hands. Kame looked at Maki’s limp body. He turned to Yamapi and said, "Thanks for everything, you may leave the room. I’ll be here for her."

Yamapi opened his mouth to protest but Kame continued, "I hope you will remember your place in the family. Today was an exception. After today, everything will be back to normal."

But how could everything return to normal. Not after Yamapi had finally understood what those feelings were. However, this was not the right time to make his feelings known, not when it was only wishful thinking on his part.

Yamapi exited the room quietly.

Tears escaped Maki’s eyes.
