"She's in her room," Yui answered.
Yamapi nodded and headed toward Maki's room.
------
Yamapi entered Maki's room and found her sitting by the table. On the table was a bottle of paper cranes.
"Who's there?" Maki asked as she heard the door open.
"Yamapi, what are you doing?" Yamapi returned the question.
"Folding paper cranes," Maki answered. "I can't really do anything else so I'm trying to keep myself busy by folding paper cranes. I'm getting better at it," Maki felt around the table for a coloured paper and started folding. In no time, the bottle of paper cranes had a new addition.
Yamapi closed his eyes in pain. When is this torture going to end for her, he wondered. "I'm bored, let's go out." he declared. He took Maki by her arms and guided her out of the room.
"Eh?" Maki was taken by surprise, "Hold on."
"Do this as a favor, won't you?" Yamapi pleaded. But even so, Maki knew that he was trying to make her feel better.
Yamapi guided Maki towards his motorbike. He placed a helmet gently on Maki before wearing his own helmet. He climbed onto the bike then turned and pulled Maki close to him as he guided her onto his bike. "Hold tight!" he said. Maki wrapped her arms around Yamapi waist, her hands trembling slightly. Yamapi placed his hands over hers and cautioned, "Here we go,"
------
"Kame!" Jin called. Kame turned at his name, "Could I talk to you for a moment, it's about Maki."
Kame followed Jin into his office.
"There's good news and bad news," Jin told Kame. "The good news is I have found that the blood clot pressing on Maki's optic nerves had dispersed in the last XRAY we did. In other words, Maki should have already fully recovered."
"Should?" Kame was confused. If the blood clot had dispersed, why is Maki not able to see anything yet.
"The bad news is we do not know why she had not regained her eyesight. Perhaps, her subconscious mind does not want to regain eyesight or perhaps she faces some kind of mental stress that made her give up on her eyesight."
"Mental stress?" Kame repeated.
"Yes, that's why I called you in to see if you know anything that can aid in Maki's condition. Is under any kind of stress lately"
Of course Kame knew. Who wouldn't be under stress in that house.
------
Maki could hear the rush of waves against the shore. The cool breeze blowing gently on her face as her hair floated softly about her face. She took a deep breath of the salty air that managed to calm her nerves somehow.
Yamapi took in Maki's expression. It was one he had never seen from the first day he met Maki. It was a mixture of bliss and tranquility. "She's so beautiful," he thought.
Yamapi took Maki by her wrist and headed towards the sea. As the reach the edge of the sea, Maki felt the cool water lapping on her feet. Suddenly, she squatted down. Yamapi was shocked at her sudden movement and immediately bent over to ask in a concerned tone, "What's wrong? Do you feel ill somewhere?" A mischievious grin crept up Maki's face as she splashed water in the direction of Yamapi's voice. Her sudden action caught Yamapi by surprise and a soft cry escaped his mouth. Maki laughed.
Yamapi smiled at Maki's laughter. He thought he would do anything to watch her laugh forever.
Then Yamapi started splashing water on Maki. Maki squealed as cool water fell on her face and body.
Both Yamapi and Maki's laughter drifted across the air.
------
Kame sat on the bench in the hospital's park. He knew Yamapi was right. He had no right to make Maki suffer like that. He knew he was selfish, but he couldn't help it. Erika's images haunted him till now. Her death blinded him, shutting all logic from his mind. He could never forget the look of disappointment and betrayal on her face when she found out that he was Tetsu's son. Those eyes that stared at him like a wounded animal that fateful day. Her voice rang in his ears, "Why do you have to be Tetsu's son? Why!" "If only you weren't the heir to Tetsu's gang." "Tell me truthfully, was everything till now all an act?"
He had remained silent then. He wanted to tell her he loved her, he would do anything to be with her. The gang meant nothing next to her. But at that moment, how could he say that when he had really gotten close to her because of the gang. That was his deepest regret, to never have told her that he loved her.
This was his response to her, to show her that it was not his desire to inherit the gang. How could he betray her again.
------
Yamapi and Maki sat side by side as the sun set in a distance. Both of them drenched in seawater.
"Ne, Maki-chan?" Yamapi started.
"Hm?"
"Would you leave the household if you're given a chance to?"
Maki remained silent. It was true that she hated Tetsu and Mariko. Furthermore, she hated to be controlled by the household. "I would, if I regained my eyesight."
"Ne, Maki-chan... Would you still keep in touch with me if one day I am no longer the same Yamapi?"
"You're asking weird questions today.. Are you hiding something from me?" Maki asked.
"Nothing, it's getting late... Let's head back now." Yamapi led Maki back to his bike.
