Shun approached Yamapi and extended his hand with a warm smile, "I hope we will work well together."
Yamapi smiled in return and took Shun's hand in his, "I feel the same way." As their eyes met, they both knew this formality was just a facade. And underneath that facade they knew that the partnership was a duel to see who will emerge as the winner. The outcome for the loser was not going to be pretty.
"Since both of you are already acquainted, Shun, would you mind leaving the room first," it was more a demand than a request from Tetsu.
Shun gave a small bow and left the room.
"So, what do you think of Shun?" Tetsu asked Yamapi.
"He looks like a promising young man," Yamapi replied. It was not meant to be a compliment nor a criticism. As much as he felt the tension between both of them just now, he had to stay neutral in front of Tetsu until he knows what is going on in his mind.
"I'm afraid he's a little too promising and also too ambitious." Tetsu laid out his views clearly. Shun was clearly not in his favor.
"So why have you appointed him as my partner on the first assignment?" Yamapi asked, though he already had an idea why.
"You're a clever person, surely you know my intentions."
"Shun Oguri, though young, he had already allied with a few of the more influential people in this organisation," Even before this meeting, Yamapi had already known who his partner was. It was basic courtesy to understand more about one's partner and Yamapi had him checked up. It was not difficult to know who Shun Oguri was. Many people in the organisation looked up to him, and in fact he was one of the more prominent figures who are threatening Tetsu's position. It must have been hard on him to have come this far at such a young age. But Tetsu was no pushover either, years of experience and fame had kept his position secure. However with years, comes age, and with age, comes death. Shun was eyeing Tetsu's position after he's gone. As for Yamapi who had so "generously" offered to take over the organization would face his greatest enemy yet, Shun Oguri. "You want me to get rid of this eyesore?"
Tetsu gave a hearty laugh, "You still have much to learn, young man. It wouldn't be possible for you to overthrow Shun in one assignnment. By letting you work together, I want you to understand him and the way he works. Not only that, I want you to create a reputation for yourself from this assignment. From what I know of Shun, he wouldn't let go of this opportunity to spread his fame. Especially now when rumors of you taking over the organization has already been widespread among the organization. He is most likely to sabotage you. One failed assignment to him means almost nothing. But a failed assignment would crush you almost immediately. So your deal will only stand if you are able to deliver what I expect of you."
"I know, be prepared to see good results." Yamapi knew this was going to be hard, but for the sake of Maki, he could not fail.
'Shun Oguri,' Yamapi thought. 'Be prepared to face your greatest failure yet.'
