Chapter 23

His Guilt

Shun slammed his fist onto the desk. His plan had failed. Yamapi was back safe and sound with the goods. It had been a long time since he felt this way. Never once did anything went out of his expectations. He looked at the man standing in front of his desk, his head bowed low as he felt ashamed for failing Shun.

"I thought I told you to contact me if he tries anything funny? What's the use of planting you by his side if you don't get anything done!" Shun raised his voice in fury.

"I did try to contact you but I couldn't receive any signal."

"Don't try and tell me that there's not a single chance for you to contact me. The journey there was not a short one. There must have been somewhere where there's network."

The man did not try to explain any further. He knew no matter what explanation he gave, Shun was not going to accept his failure.

"Well done," Tetsu patted Yamapi's shoulder. He had not expected this assignment to be a smooth one for him. "So tell me, how did you do it. It's unlike Shun not to take any actions against you."

*FLASHBACK*

"Don't worry, I'll get the goods back safely." Yamapi smiled with confidence. "I think I'll learn alot from you."

"It's my pleasure to teach you the ropes. I look forward to future cooperation, should there be a chance." Shun smiled back, his smile cold and unfeeling.

Yamapi exited the room. He didn't know what Shun was up to, but no way was he going to direct the police away. More like, he's going to direct the police to him.

He picked up the cellphone and dialed the number of the other party involved in the transaction.

*END OF FLASHBACK*

"It wasn't hard to convince them to change the location to carry out the exchange. I simply told them that I got a tip-off that the police are going to be at the first location. Of course, the hardest part was to convince them to keep it from Shun. After all, he was the veteran in this area. I figured Shun would be going to double check the exchange with them right before we set off to make sure that everything was going to his plan. In that case, I told them that I suspect a mole was planted next to Shun and his phone is very likely to be bugged. So if he calls them, it is better not to tell him that there is a change in location. They believed me surprisingly. Perhaps Shun told them the whole story of how he's going to direct the police away too. That's why they thought that the police are really going after Shun and my story of the mole would stand," Yamapi explained.

"But wouldn't he make sure that you arrive at the destination he confirmed?"

"I checked up on the people who are following me beforehand. Most of them are young and new with almost blank background. Only 2 are more experienced. One of which had a daughter who's sick. If Shun was going to sabotage me, he can't plant too many of his sidekicks around me or else the others would lose their trust in him. So I suspected that he made an offer to that person to take care of his daughter if he gets caught. In any case, a simple gadget did the trick." Yamapi took out a small mechanic. "This is able to disrupt radiowaves within 3 metre radius. Which is more than sufficient to keep anyone from contacting outsiders from inside the car. As expected, upon reaching the destination the person Shun planted next to me excused himself probably to try and contact Shun. But the place I chose to carry out the transaction had no network. Everything after that went smoothly. Transaction was sealed according to my plans and I brought the goods back safely."

"I see...in any case congratulations for completing your assignment. This was a very important transaction. You have proved yourself worthy of taking over the organization." Tetsu laughed. "Do you have any idea what was contained in the suitcase?"

"No." Yamapi answered.

"It's a kind of deadly virus used in biological warfare. And there are people out there who are ready to pay for it."

Yamapi knew how scary biological warfare is. People suffered a fate worse than death.

Tetsu looked at Yamapi's reaction. "Why? Do you feel guilty after knowing what it is?"

Yamapi remained silent and Tetsu knew his answer.

"The moment you said you are taking over the organization, you have to throw away your conscience. As the leader of the organization, your priority is the benefit of the organization. Do you know how many people exist in this organization? All of them out there are depending on you. Not only them, but also their family. You have no time to care about what your conscience tells you."

Yamapi stared long and hard at Tetsu. So he gave up his conscience a long time ago? Is that what makes him the Tetsu that's standing in front of him today. Was he going to be like Tetsu in future?

"Excuse me, I'm tired," Yamapi turned and left the room. He felt disgusted at himself, it's almost as if his soul was tainted now. He was definitely going to hell for this. No matter what Tetsu said, there was no way he could ignore his conscience.
