Chapter 24

His Haven

"Yamapi hasn't been around for quite some time. Is he busy?" Maki's mother asked her.

"Yea... I suppose so..." Maki sounded listless.

"Did something happen between both of you?"

Maki recalled seeing Yamapi get into the car with a bunch of black suited guys.

That day, he asked her, "Ne, Maki-chan... Would you still keep in touch with me if one day I am no longer the same Yamapi?" What had he meant by no longer the same Yamapi? What was he going to do that day? Then she remembered him walking out of Tetsu's study. Was he working for Tetsu? But he had never interfered in the gang matters before.

"Maki?" her mother called upon seeing her daughter's staring into space.

"Hm?" Maki collected her thoughts.

"You really don't need to come so often if you're busy. You look tired." Maki's mom looked at her, concerned.

"I didn't sleep well last night, that's why. Don't worry too much. Take care of yourself first."

"In that case, why don't you go home first? Come another day when you're feeling better."

Maki nodded. She didn't want to let her mom worry, it wouldn't be good for her health.

"I'll come again soon."

Maki's mom waved her hand and Maki left the room.

Maki stopped in her tracks as she saw the figure standing in front of her. It was Yamapi and he looked worn out.

------

Both of them sat on a bench in the hospital park. The silence between them was stifling. Maki had a thousand burning questions to ask but did not know where to begin. Yamapi had a million things to tell but not knowing where to start.

"It's been a long time since we sat down like this..." Maki finally spoke.

"Yea..." how he missed those days when he could stare at Maki straight in the eye and talk about almost anything under the Sun. She, on the other hand, accepted everything that he did and say. But he wasn't so sure now. If she learnt about what he did, would she despise him?

"So what have you been busy with these days?"

Instead of answering, Yamapi questioned her, "Maki-chan, what would you do if you had to endanger a million people's lives to save someone you want to protect?"

Maki was startled at his question. But she replied, "I think the person I want to protect will not wish for me to do so."

"Are you facing any difficulties?" Maki asked earnestly.

Yamapi shook his head slowly. How could he ever tell her what he had done for her. He remembered the first time he met her, he thought he met an angel. Someone so pure, innocent, and guilt-free. But him, he was doomed. He was a devil, a tainted soul. An existence that would mar her purity. He hoped for forgiveness. Last night was a sleepless night for him, he felt as though he had struck a deal with Satan. Yes, Satan in human form, someone who's blood runs in him, Tetsu. Was there any turning back for him? And then among those thoughts, Maki's image came into his mind. Maki's existence gave him peace. That's why today he had to look for her. To find that peace he had lost. For some reason, tears formed in his eyes and slowly rolled down his cheeks. He placed his head on Maki's shoulder hoping for some sort of consolation, and it came.

She couldn't bear to ask him anymore questions. She could see he was in pain. Slowly, she reached out her hands to stroke his head. "Everything's gonna be alright.." she coaxed as though he was an infant that needed her care. "No matter what happens I'll be here for you." she wanted to return that comfort she found in him when she was in a coma. And she did, Yamapi found his haven, in her arms.

Unknown to both of them, someone overlooked this whole scene.
