“You have something to say?” Pi asked.
Maki swerved around, surprised, “I thought you did.”
Pi kicked lightly at the grass, he felt foolish now. “I…You…” he stuttered.
“I hope Kame won’t live in his past shadows forever. I was trying to help him get out of it today.” Maki started, reading Pi’s insecurities.
Pi looked over at Maki and saw her sincerity. “I wasn’t actually talking about that,” he lied and started playing with his fingers like they were suddenly the most interesting thing ever on earth.
Maki smiled and continued her stargazing. She suddenly commented, “The stars are really pretty tonight.”
Pi followed her line of vision up to the skies. At his distraction, Maki swiftly gave Pi a peck on his cheeks. His hands flew up to where Maki’s lips left off and he stood frozen for a very long time. He slowly turned his head over to look at Maki but she had already resumed her stargazing activity; a light smile evident on her face; and his mouth slowly curved up into a smile too.
A voice from behind broke Pi’s trance, “Maki, the hospital called. Your mother’s situation has deteriorated. They need you at the hospital.”
That informant was Yui. She had seen everything and was stunned by what she had just saw, but she concealed whatever surprise before she called out to Maki. Deep in her, a weird feeling was stirring.
