Chapter 38

At the hospital

Maki’s heart was racing and she felt that her foot had been rooted to the ground. She felt a force from behind as Pi grabbed her around the shoulders and led her towards the car. He pushed her gently onto the side seat and took his place next to her in the driver’s seat. He jammed his feet into the accelerator as the car shot out of the dark gates that indicated the boundary of the household.

--------------------

Maki’s heart was still racing and she didn’t know if it was because she was running at top speed towards her mother’s ward or that shocked effect that never once ceased on her way to the hospital. As she reached the door of the ward, a doctor and nurse were coming out of the room. Maki immediately grabbed hold of the doctor and asked, “How’s my mother?”

The doctor who was surprised by Maki’s sudden action quickly regained herself and spoke, “She had a sudden heart attack and is in a critical condition. We needed you to sign a document before we can proceed with the operation. We are still trying to stabilize a condition and there’s a certain risk to the operation but given her condition I would recommend you to send her for operation immediately.” The doctor spoke with experience.

“I’ll sign the document, where is it?” Maki asked, still breathless from the running.

“This way please,” the nurse beside the doctor ran off, indicating Maki to follow closely behind.

--------------------

Maki strode up and down outside the operation theatre. A few times she stopped directly outside the door as if trying to peer inside the room to catch a glimpse of the progress of the operation but the door looked as though if it was airtight shut. Then she will continue to pace up and down the operation theatre impatiently.

Pi was at a loss of what to do other than keeping her accompany outside the theatre as his eyes followed her every movement. Finally he walked up and pulled her into his arms. “Don’t worry, your mom’s a good person, she’ll be fine.”

Maki clung on to Pi for support. She was really tired after the series of events over the last few days and just when she thought everything was in place, this had to happen to her mother. Her father had been virtually non-existent throughout her childhood other than the occasional visits back home to get money from them. It was always her and her mother only. They relied on each other and Maki had never thought of the day when they would part. The mere thought of it drained all energy away from her.

Pi led Maki towards the seats and sat her down. He knelt down and stared into her weary eyes. His hands found its way up to her cheeks. Pi took his place beside Maki and tilted her head to rest on his shoulders, “Take a rest.”

Maki obediently closed her eyes, her body finally relaxed after a night of tension and she fell into a deep slumber on his broad shoulders.

When she finally awoke, she was no longer resting on his shoulders. Instead, she found herself on a soft bed which smells of clean white sheets. She sat up abruptly finding, to her relief, her mother sleeping soundly on another bed. The machine that recorded her mother’s heartbeat was beeping steadily. Just then, Pi entered through the door. “Oh you’re awake,” he said. “The operation was a success, but it’ll take some time for your mom to wake up.” He moved over to where Maki was and set some food he just bought on the table beside her. “You must be hungry, here,” he took a cup and poured milk into it before pushing it towards Maki’s lips.

Maki took over the cup and sipped in the milk. It felt good as it went down her throat and she realized how deprived of water she was. She hadn’t drunk a single drop of water since that dinner with Kame. “Why didn’t you wake me up?” she couldn’t help but ask reproachfully.

Pi smiled and answered, “You probably don’t know how adorable you are when you’re asleep. How could I bear to wake you up?” Maki raised the cup of milk to her lips again as she tried to cover her reddened face.
-------------------------
Maki insisted on Pi going home while she stayed to wait for her mom to wake up. While she had her share of sleep last night, Pi seemed to have been busy waiting for her mom’s operation to end and to carry her to the ward and buying breakfast early in the morning. Pi finally gave in to her request and after ensuring that she was eating well, he went back home. Not to his knowledge, a terrible news awaited him at home.
