Chapter 40

If love were kisses

As Maki tried to run out of the house, she bumped into Kame at the gates. The running had drained all energy left in her. She fell weakly into Kame’s arms.

“Are you alright?” Kame asked with concern.

-----------------

“I know you like her…” said Yui. “But does she feel the same towards you?” Yui gave a bitter laugh. “She’s your sister-in-law and she’s where she belongs now.”

Pi looked over at Yui curiously, then he noticed the two figures outside. As if such a scene was not devastating enough, Yui had to rub salt in his wound. “She belongs fully to Kame, her body, her mind, her soul… and her heart.”

“Shut up!” Pi shouted, his eyes turning a fierce red. He rushed out of the room, running for his destination.

-----------------

Maki tried to steady herself and pushed her weight off Kame. “I’m fine…” she said, but her trembling voice gave her away easily.

“Maki-chan!” a familiar voice called from behind her. He was the last person she wanted to see now. “Maki-chan…” a breathless Pi ran to her side and grabbed hold of her hand but Maki twisted her hand away from him. She moved behind Kame as if using him as a shield between her and Pi.

She slid her hand on to Kame’s and said in a low voice, “Please don’t address me so informally. I’m your sister-in-law.” At this moment, she did not want to have anything to do with Pi.

“Maki-chan… why are you saying this?” Pi asked, obviously confused by her sudden change of attitude.

“Kame, let’s go back,” she squeezed Kame’s hand a little, seeking for his help. On cue, Kame pulled her away from Pi and towards the house.

Instinctively, Pi caught hold of Maki’s wrist, disallowing her to free herself once more. He stared at her as if demanding a response he wanted, but she refused to return his gaze.

“Enough already, let her go,” Kame said. His words turned on deaf ears as Pi did not release his hold. Angered, Kame shoved him hardly away causing him to fall to the ground. Then, both Kame and Maki turned away, walking hand in hand away from Pi.

-----------------------------

A few days had passed since the incident. The household was in the bustling mood as the preparation for Yui and Pi’s wedding were made. Yui had came by her room one day.

“Maki, you are the only friend I have here. You’ll wish the best for me right?”

“Yui…”

“I love him,” Yui said firmly. “I’ll never let him go. I really hope you’ll give me your best wishes, it’s important to me.”

And then Maki found herself enduring sleepless nights. A soft click of the door told her someone was in the room. Kame had informed her that he was taking the night shift tonight so she was rather baffled by the other presence in the room.

In the darkness of the room, Maki could see a shadow moving swiftly across the room. “Kame?” she asked, sitting up on the bed. The shadow did not answer, but before she knew it, she was pinned back down on the bed and found herself staring into his eyes.

“Why have you been ignoring me? Is it because of the engagement?” Pi demanded an answer.

“I really hope you’ll give me your best wishes, it’s important to me,” Yui’s voice rang in her head.

“Yes. We shouldn’t have been so close before, now everything is back to where it should be. I’m your sister-in-law, and I congra…” Pi sealed her lips with his to prevent her from saying anymore things that threaten to cut his heart into a thousand pieces. When Maki realized what was happening, she pushed Pi away with all her strength.

“What do you think you’re doing!”

“Stop saying you’re my sister-in-law. You know I don’t give a damn about it. I thought you knew how I feel about you, and you feel the same way about me, don’t you! Then why are you saying all this ridiculous things!”

“You’ve thought wrongly, I’ve always only treated you as my brother-in-law and friend.” Maki refused to admit to her own feelings. She knew admitting to it will only bring both of them further down the road of no return.

“You’re lying…lies… All lies!” Pi bellowed and pinned her back down on the bed. “You love me, I know it! Why are you denying it!” He bent down to kiss her forcefully. Maki struggled to free herself but he was too strong.

“Stop…” Maki’s words were muffled by his kiss.

Pi had lost his senses. He shut his ears to her cries. Everything were lies, everything was fake. The only thing that was real now, was his lips against hers. She tasted so sweet.

“No!” Maki turned her head to the side, breaking the kiss and allowing herself to call for help. But Pi was fast to muffle her cries with his hand.

“Shhh…” he cooed. “Not so loud. You wouldn’t want anyone to find us in this position.”

Maki’s tears were streaming down her face rapidly. He released his hand slowly, letting it travel down to her thighs. Lust was consuming him.

“Please… don’t” Maki pleaded. “Why are you doing this to me...”

“Because I love you,”

“This is wrong… this is wrong…” Maki repeated between sobs.

“Love is not wrong. It’s wrong only when you deny it.” He pushed the night gown further up to her waist. He landed his lips on her jawline, making his way down her neck to her collarbones, pausing slightly above it as he breathed in her scent. Then he laid his head upon her chest, listening to her heartbeat. “I hear it… your heart… it says it belongs to me.”

“This isn’t love, you’re hurting me,”

“Sometimes, love hurts. I’ll prove to you how much I love you.” He pulled down the last barrier to conquer her. His kisses went down to her flat tummy, rubbing her inner thigh with his thumb.

“I hate you!” Something in Maki’s voice made him stop. For a second, he believed that she hated him. “We won’t even be friends. Sex without love, it’s rape. I won’t ever forgive you if you do.”

Pi started to loosen his grip on her hands. Maki took the opportunity to break loose and pulled blankets over herself. “I’m sorry… I must have scared you.” Maki retreated further into the corner of the bed. “I don’t know what came over me. I just wanted to let you know that my love for you stands true. I must have been possessed.” Pi buried his head into his hands “I’m sorry.” Tears rolled down his cheeks, he turned to face Maki. “Please forgive me, I was desperate. You were ignoring me and I didn’t know why. I’m sorry, I love you.”

Pi stood up and turned to leave. As he made his way across the room, a soft body came crashing into him, hugging him from behind. “I’m sorry too,” Maki’s trembling voice echoed through the room. “I do love you. But what could I do? Yui’s my first friend in this household. She accompanied me when I was lost and all alone. I can’t possibly betray her. And I thought you might actually like her back.”

“Eh?” Pi’s uncertain voice croaked.

“I saw it, I saw you kiss her.” Pi was stunned. So that was the reason behind her odd behavior that night. He pulled her arms that was tightened around his waist away and turned to face her.

“If love could be equated to kisses, I wouldn’t have kissed her. You’re the only one I truly want to kiss,” he ran his finger lightly over her lips before bending down towards her slowly and locking his lips with hers in a passionate kiss, healing the wounds that he inflicted on her just previously.
