Chapter 41

Bridal Store

“Maki, I’m going to try out my bridal gown today. Will you accompany?” Yui popped by her room a few days later, in an unusually bubbly mood. “Please?” Yui took Maki’s hands in hers and smiled at her warmly. “Pi said he’s not free to go and it would look really bad if I went alone.”

Maki bit her lower lip nervously; she had a thousand reasons not to go. Because she loved the groom… Because he would not want her to go… Because she did not want to lie to herself anymore… The problem was, she could not use these reasons to turn Yui down.

“Maki? Please?” Yui broke her train of thoughts.

“Ah… Mm” Maki nodded.

“Yataa! Let’s go!” Yui pulled Maki excitedly out of the door.

------------------

Yui twirled on the spot in front of the mirror. “Mm… what do you think Maki?”

“This is pretty,” Maki smiled.

“I like this design too. I wonder if Pi will like it,” Yui smiled to herself. Then she ran to her bag and pulled out her cellphone. “Let’s take a picture together!” Yui plopped herself next to Maki, “Say Cheese!” The sound of the camera phone clicked.

“I think I’ll try some more designs, Maki why don’t you choose a bridesmaid dress too?”

“Eh?”

“You wouldn’t refuse me, would you?” Yui stared at Maki intently. “You’re my only friend, only you can be my bridesmaid.”

“Umm…” Maki hesitated.

“It’s settled then!” Yui said cheerfully. She turned around to the sales girl, “Would you help her in picking out a bridesmaid dress?”

Yui then walked into the dressing room again. She whipped out her cellphone and started going through the photos until she reached the one she just took with Maki.

----------------------

Maki looked through the row of dresses. Her own wedding was so rushed that she hadn’t the luxury to try on wedding gowns. She let her finger slip softly over the dresses until it came to rest on a white wedding gown. She let the smooth silk move through her fingers.

“Would you like to try it?” the sales girl asked politely.

Maki smiled weakly, she might not even have the chance to don on a wedding gown anymore. Just then, Yui came walking out of the dressing room, wearing a different gown now.

“Haven’t made your choice?” Yui asked.

“Oh yeah,” Maki moved her hand quickly over to another dress nearby, this time a pink bridesmaid dress. “I’ll go try it on now.”

---------------------

No sooner had she closed the curtains behind her when she heard Yui’s squeals, “Pi! You’re here!”

---------------------

“Where’s Maki?” Pi asked.

“She’s in the dressing room. Pi! What do you think about this gown? I haven’t been able to decide on one.” Yui wrapped her arms conveniently around his.

Pi looks uninterestedly away from her. “Anything will do.”

Maki pulled the curtains and stepped out in a pink dress. Pi looked over at her approvingly, “You’re beautiful,” he smiled at her. Yui looked between Pi and Maki, she felt as if the something was gripping at her heart.

Yui forced a smile and walked over to Maki, “Yea, Maki-chan looks really beautiful ne! Pi! Maki has agreed to be my bridesmaid. We’ll be the prettiest bride and bridesmaid.” Maki looked guiltily away from Pi. Yui then turned serious and looked at Maki, “But don’t steal the spotlight from me ne!”

Yui then released Maki’s hand and crossed over back to Pi’s side. “Pi! Why don’t you go try on your suit too!”

“There’s no need to,” he pulled away from her. An awkward silence fell upon the bridal store.

“Um…” Maki broke the silence, “I guess I’ll go change back now.”

“Uh.. yea… I’ll go change too,” Yui said softly and turned towards the dressing room. The salesgirl hurried over to help her with the bulk of wedding gown that trailed behind her.

---------------------

Maki looked at herself in the mirror and sighed. “What am I doing?” Maki closed her eyes and tried to recollect herself.

Suddenly a warm pair of arms encircled her. She opened her eyes in surprise and saw Pi hugging her from behind through the mirror. “Yea, what do you think you’re doing?” he asked and chuckled. He lowered his head and kissed her white sensitive skin.

“Don’t… Yui’s here,” she tried to shy away from him.

“Let’s go.”

“Eh?”

Pi gave a soft laugh and without any warning, pulled Maki out of the dressing room and raced out of the store.

--------------------

“Pi?” Yui called out to the empty store.

“Miss, do you want the previous dress?” the salesgirl asked.

There was no answer from her. Yui clenched her fist tightly. Her nails were sinking into her flesh but she could not feel it. The humiliation that the 2 of them left her was much harder to bear.

“Don’t blame me… You betrayed me first,” Yui muttered under her breath.
