“Is it okay to leave Yui behind?” Maki asked worriedly.
“Don’t worry about it,” he ruffled her hair affectionately. ‘Yui’s not as innocent as you think she is,” he thought to himself, recalling the short message she sent him. In it was a photo of her and Maki with a short sentence, “Maki’s here, are you sure you’re not coming?”
“But…”
“No buts…” said Pi firmly. “Today shall officially be our first date!” he announced.
“Eh?” Maki looked around her and finally realized she’s along the busy streets of Shibuya. “In this?” she asked incredulously as she pointed to the bridesmaid dress she had not changed out of.
“Hmm…” Pi started studying her outfit seriously then cocked his head to a side and said cheekily, “why not?”
Before Maki could protest further, she found her own hands enveloped in his bigger ones and they were walking down the street of Shibuya just like any other couples on the same street. Having this thought made her smile.
----------------------
The name on the door read, “Horikita Hiyono”. She twisted the doorknob and entered the door.
“Hi,”
“Hi… who are you?” Maki’s mother asked.
“I’m Yui,” the girl introduced and then added, “Yamapi’s fiancée.”
--------------------
Maki looked over at the crowd near the hotel entrance. “What’s going on?” she wondered.
Pi followed her gaze and found a crowd of elaborately dressed teenage girls and boys alike. Just then a group of girls as elaborately dressed walked past them towards the crowd. “Hey!” Pi stopped one of them. “What’s going on over there?” he pointed to the crowd.
“It’s our prom night,” one of the girls answered. As they walked away, another girl commented to the first one, “Isn’t he hot?”
Maki raised her eyebrows and looked over at Pi with slight amusement twinkling in her eyes.
“What…” he blinked back innocently, “I can’t help it if I am.”
Maki laughed, “What a narcissi.”
“Well, I’m not the only one who loves me,” he grins looking into Maki’s eyes and teasing her. He leaned slowly forward, tilting her chin slightly upwards so that her lips would meet his. Everything was going smoothly until Maki felt uneasy of the situation, she glanced quickly to her left and to her horror, an old woman was staring at them. Instinctively, she pushed Pi away.
The old woman hobbles over and clucks her tongue. “Young people nowadays.” she said, shaking her head in disapproval, not forgetting to flash a middle finger before she disappeared into a corner.
Pi and Maki gapes after her, “Talk about shock… old people nowadays…” they said in unison. They turned to look at each other before breaking out into laughter.
Maki then turned around, looking longingly at the crowd before the hotel entrance. “I never got to take part in my prom,” she sighs. Thinking back, that was probably the only regret she felt as a teenage. Part-time jobs, tending after the store, looking after her mother and trying to balance all those with her dream of becoming a lawyer, it was not difficult to see the reason why Maki did not exactly enjoy the benefits as a teenager.
“Why not now?” Pi suggested.
“We don’t actually have an entry ticket, if you haven’t realized,” Maki laughed.
Pi shrugged, an idea flashing across his mind.
He took Maki’s hand and disappeared into the crowd, fitting in perfectly with them. They inched nearer to another bigger group, probably planning to enter the hotel as a class. “Hi,” Pi spoke to one of the girls from the group. The girl turned around, rather flattered that a cute guy had just spoken to her.

“…” Hiyono was speechless.
“I hope you can talk to her about it, she would also get hurt in the process,” Yui spoke with tears glistening in her eyes. She was putting on a pitiful act.
“You mean… Pi is Maki’s brother-in-law? But she never told me she was married…” Hiyono breathed deeply, the tale she had just heard was completely unbelievable. This girl who was crying in front of her, was telling her that Maki was having an affair with Pi, the boy she had thought was Maki’s boyfriend. Not only that, Pi was Maki’s brother-in-law and also someone else’s fiancé.
“I’m so sorry, it’s my entire fault,” Yui weeped. “If not for me having a fight with Pi over something so small, he might not have turned to Maki for comfort and all these wouldn’t have happened. My marriage is arranged to be on early next month, I’m afraid Maki will be hurt even more if they carry on their relationship. I really have no idea what else I can do, that’s why I’m turning to you.”
“I’m sorry my daughter brought so much trouble to you. Don’t worry Yui-san, I’ll try my best to stop this relationship,” Hiyono tried to comfort Yui, even though she herself was on the verge of breakdown. Maki had always been her pride, never in her dreams would she think that Maki would commit adultery.
-----------------------
Pi had somehow managed to get both of them inside safely. The crowd in the lobby was already emptied as everyone entered the ballroom. It seems that a few activities were already going on upstage. Soft, romantic music filtered through the air, tingling the sensations of the teenagers. The low, sexy voice of the DJ boomed through the stereos, “And now we are going to select the best couple from the floor, those who are participating please choose your partners now and enter the dance floor right in the middle of the room. Guys who have yet to pluck up your courage to confess, this is your time. Girls, this might be your only chance to be close to your crush. So put away those pride and seek out that lucky him or her now.”
Excited voices of the crowd started to fill the atmosphere. Couples started to enter the dance floor. Some guys started walking over to girls they have never had the chance to talk to before. Some girls huddled together in a group, whispering excitedly and pointing at possibly their crushes.
Pi smiled and turned to Maki. He held out his hand most gentlemanly to invite her to a dance, “May I?”
Maki placed her hand carefully upon his and allowed him lead her out onto the dance floor. This wasn’t the first time they danced together, but it was definitely the first time they danced with both hearts longing for each other.
Maki placed both hands around Pi’s neck and he placed both hands around her petite waste, pulling her close to him, their steps falling perfectly into place. Pi’s intent gaze made her look away. “What are you looking at?” she asked softly.
“You,” his directness made her flush. Her features were illuminated under the yellow warm lights, making her face look even redder than normal. Pi could not help but feel that he loves her even more everyday. He loved how easy it was to make her blush, he loved how her eyes blink innocently up at him, he loved having her in his arms (it’s almost as if his arms were made just for her) and he loved the touch of her lips upon his. And he wanted to feel it once again. “Maki… can I kiss you?” the question came almost naturally.
“Eh?” Maki looked up in surprise. He had already started leaning towards her.
Suddenly, bright lights shone on them, breaking the moment. “And may we welcome the best couple onstage,” the DJ voice boomed over the stereo again. “Yes you!” the DJ repeated as he pointed towards Pi and Maki.
Pi started tugging on a pretty stunned Maki onstage.
Once onstage, the DJ started interviewing them, “So are two of you in a relationship currently?”
“Yep!” Pi answered cheekily, pulling Maki by the hand closer to him, causing her to lose her balance and fall right onto his chest. The crowd below cheered like mad.
“And what’s your story?” the DJ continued with the interview.
“We… met on a stormy night…” the crowd started cheering again.
“So it was love at first sight?” the DJ inquired.
“Maybe…” Pi rested his chin on his hand thoughtfully.
“What do you mean maybe? Either it was or not.” The DJ pressed on. Now even Maki was curious.
“I thought she was an angel,” a few girls below were having dreamy eyes now. It’s almost as if it were out of a movie. This news was even fresh to Maki.
“So angel it is! And now will the angel grant him a holy kiss!” the heat was going up and the DJ was not about to let it stop.
“KISSU! KISSU! KISSU!” the crowd below chanted.
Pi slipped his hands around her waist and pulled her close, leaning forward to kiss her, for the third time that night…
“They don’t even go to Ohsaka High!” someone from the crowd shouted across.
Damn. Couldn’t that person wait for a few more seconds?!
----------------------------
Once escorted out of the hotel, Maki thought she was going to burst out laughing any moment. Pi, on the other hand, was feeling rather sulky that all three kisses had been ruined. First by an old lady, then the flashlight and finally by an idiot who just could not keep his mouth shut.
“Let’s go somewhere else,” Pi tugged Maki along.
“Where?” she asked.
Even Pi had no idea now, just somewhere where there will be no old lady, no DJs, and absolute nobody to disrupt him from kissing her.
