Chapter 45

Innocence and Conspiracy

Somehow, they found themselves by the seaside, where only a few dim lamps were the only source of light, rushing of the waves to shore could be heard and absolutely no one in sight. Maki tasted the saltiness of the air, raising her head to feel the wind rush past her body, teasing her every sense. She closed her eyes and lifted her hand slowly until it was parallel to the ground, her dress beating lightly around her. She felt almost as if she were flying.

“Feels nice…” she smiled.

Almost as if she walked out of a portrait, the picture of her petite figure with a light smile upon her face made Pi’s heart race. The way her face was tilted up with her arms outstretched, it’s almost as if she was waiting for… waiting for…

Maki felt a light pressure upon her lips, her eyes fluttered open in surprise. Pi wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. The contrast of his warmth pressed against her and the cold wind that envelope her previously made Maki feel almost as if his arms were the safest place on Earth. She allowed her body to relax against his bigger ones, wrapping her arms around his neck and responding softly to his kisses.

Yamapi suckled on her upper lips, tasting the sweet sensation of it (and perhaps the strawberry-flavored gloss). He tightened his arms around her, feeling the softness of her body fitting perfectly into his arms. Her warm breath brushing past his lips made him feel like he could kiss her forever.

Kame sat at his desk, typing furiously on his laptop in preparation for a presentation before the hospital board of directors tomorrow. He was chosen as one of the most promising doctor in the hospital he was working in now and they were preparing to send him to a larger sister hospital to further his skills and expertise. It was a great opportunity for him considering he had only finished his internship in the current hospital not too long ago. A light knock came on the bedroom door as he was tying up the loose ends of the presentation.

“Come in,” he called, wondering who would be looking for him at this late hour, which he had only realized as he glanced at the clock on the wall opposite him. It also made him wonder why Maki was not home at this time.

The girl that came into the room was not familiar to him. He thought he might have seen her somewhere but couldn’t put a finger to it. “Is there anything I can help you with?” he asked, clearly befuddled as to what a girl like her would have anything to do with him.

“I’m Yui,” she introduced herself. Yui… it sounded really familiar… isn’t the girl who is about to marry Yamapi called Yui as well? “Maki’s not back yet?”

So she’s looking for Maki.

“Nope,” Kame answered. “Do you need me to pass her a message?”

“I’m not looking for her. I’m looking for you.”

“Me? Sorry if I sound rude, but I believe I barely know you,” Kame said, trying to make sense out of this encounter.

Yui smiled calmly and moved closer to Kame, “I’m surprise you haven’t noticed the relationship going on between Pi and Maki.” Kame raised an eyebrow. Yui stopped before his desk and leaned forward so that she was looking directly into his eyes, like she was trying to read what he was thinking, “or perhaps, you’re just feigning ignorance.”

Kame narrowed his eyes, he did not like how this girl was carrying the conversation, almost as if she were inviting him into a conspiracy; almost as if hinting something dirty was going on behind his back. “I still do not see your point,” Kame leaned back against his chair, reluctant to let Yui read anything off his facial expression.

Yui threw back her head and gave a small chuckle, “I want us to work together.” There, just as he thought, a conspiracy.

-------------------

Maki and Pi were now lying side by side under the star-filled skies after both of them reluctantly pulled away from the sweet lingering kiss they shared earlier, breathless.

“Ne!” Maki called out to him, “do you remember the last time we were here together?”

“Of course,” a light smile played on his lips as he recalled the memory. Maki had fallen ill and he carried her until they found a shelter, and he helped her change out of her… It was a pretty fond memory and Yamapi chuckled at the thought.

Maki turned around until she was half-lying on Pi. “What are you thinking of?” Maki eyed him suspiciously.

“Nothing…” he lied, tucking a strand of hair behind Maki’s ear before letting his hand stroke the sides of her face and then finally resting on her shoulder. The playful smile never left his lips.

“Mmm…” Maki glanced up thoughtfully, then without any warning, her hands came down on his tummy and she started to tickle him.

“Stop stop!” Pi shrieked between laughter. “Alright I’ll say… I’ll tell!” when Maki finally stopped tickling him, he grabbed both her hands and placed them on his chest, just for safekeeping. “That time, I sort of saw…” his eyeline lowered to her chest area.

Maki widened her eyes and gasped, pushing herself off him. But his grip on her was stronger and she fell back onto him again. “Hentai!” Maki chided, blushing furiously and half-exasperated that she was unable to stop him from looking. “Stop looking!” she ordered.

“I will… if I get a kiss in exchange,” Pi grinned, prompting her for a kiss.

“No!” Maki insisted and with no other choice, she dug her head into his chest. Just like an ostrich, digging its head into the ground thinking that it would be safe from the predator.

Pi looked at her innocent act, making him want her even more. They spent a short moment in silence; Maki could hear his heart racing against his chest. She looked up in puzzle at him and asked, “Why’s your heart beating so quickly?”

In a swift motion, Pi flipped both of them over so that he was lying on top of her. He leaned close to her until his lips were hovering over hers. “That’s because I’m going to kiss you,” he answered, then he closed the remaining gap between both of them, tasting her sweetness once more. Only this time, he probed into her mouth with his tongue, playing with her clumsy one, trying to get her to respond in the same way. When she finally responded shyly, he knew there was no mistake, she was the only one who could make him feel complete and nobody was about to make him let go. Not Tetsu, not Kame and definitely… not Yui.

------------------

Yui couldn’t help but laugh at how slow this guy in front of her was in realizing his feelings for Maki. That was probably his only weakness as compared to Pi.

“I can’t believe you’re going to let the person you love slip through your hands again. Don’t you ever learn?” from his lesson six years ago. That was the last straw; Kame rose dangerously from his seat and wrapped his fingers around Yui’s neck.

“Don’t you even dare talk about Erika this lightly,” his fingers tightened around Yui until she turned red in the face.

When he realized what he was doing, he quickly released his grip. Yui fell limply onto the floor, coughing and sputtering from the sudden loss of pressure on her windpipe, gasping for air like there wasn’t enough in the room. She placed her hand around her neck, massaging it lightly.

She looked up at Kame, suddenly frightened. No wonder he was the heir to Tetsu’s gang six years ago, he did have the air of a gang leader. “You don’t have to answer me right away, when you’ve finally decided, let me know your decision.” She pushed herself slowly off the ground, turning for the door to make her escape.
