Then how could he deal with Yui and ensure that Maki will not get hurt in the process? Even if Maki finds out the truth about Yui one day, she would never allow him to deal with Yui the mafia way. Maki has just too much righteousness in her. She never even want him to be associated with the mafia gang in any way.
Damn, the whole thing was just too complicated. There was just too many things to consider, too many things pulling him back. When did he become such a wimp? If it was in the past, he would simply need to order a few of his man to deal with Yui. No intricate plans, just orders and his followers would fill in the blanks for him. But now?
Pi wanted to laugh for allowing himself to grow so weak. But if that was the price he had to pay to be with Maki, he would gladly do so. Because only Maki could make him feel sweetness in the midst of his bitter life. Bitter the day he found out his real identity as Tetsu’s bastard son.
Pi leans his head back on the sofa staring at the ceiling, allowing his mind to clear so that he could think better.
Why isn’t Maki back yet?
Every moment of his time was almost taken up by thoughts of her.
The sound of the doorknob to the front door twisting caused Pi to jerk up from his comfortable sitting position. He turned his head to see who was coming through the door.
“Maki!” Pi called out when he saw who it was.
Maki looked up at the source of the voice and smiled softly at him. “Pi… not sleeping yet?”
He walked up to her and circled his arms around her waist, “Not without my goodnight kiss” he grinned.
But Maki did not seemed to be in the mood for playing today. Her large round eyes looked up at Pi, some sort of sadness evident in it; unshed tears were rolling in her eyes.
Pi… what was she going to do with him? When he’s standing right in front of her, the feelings that she had suppressed since her mother asked her to leave him suddenly poured out like rapids.
Pi panicked at her sudden melancholy. “What happened today?” His hands went up to caress her cheek. The gentleness he showed calmed Maki a little.
“Nothing… Have you seen Yui?” she asked. No matter how she think about it, only one person would tell her mother about Pi’s engagement to Yui. And it’s none other than Yui herself.
“Yui?” Pi echoed. Why was she looking for Yui?
“There’s something I need to confirm.”
Has Maki finally seen through Yui’s colors? “I suppose she’s in her own room.”
Maki tiptoed and landed a kiss on Pi’s cheeks. “Good night,” she bidded, then turned and walked towards the direction of Yui’s room.
Pi held on to her hand, making her swerve around to look at him. “Do you need me to accompany you?”
Maki laughed lightly at his overprotective stance, what could Yui possibly do to her? The worst that could possibly happen was falling out with Yui, she could take it. It’s not as if she’s a brittle glass that would break easily. After all, she had grown up protecting her mother. Maki took Pi’s broad hands into her own and looked up at him, “Trust me, I’m not that weak.”

Maki knocked on Yui’s door.
“Come in!” a female voice that Maki recognized as Yui’s called from within the room.
Maki entered the room and was immediately greeted by the sweet scent of roses. Yui was seated at her dressing table, applying what seemed like moisturizer from the line of products on the table. It seems that Yui had adjusted well to the life of a mistress.
“Maki!” Yui jumped out of her seat and approached Maki, her smile a little too over the top. “What do you have to see me about this late at night?”
If she had not guessed wrongly, Hiyono must have spoken to Maki about her forbidden relationship with Pi.
“It’s just we had not had a proper talk ever since you were no longer serving me.”

What, so now Maki thinks of herself as a high and mighty mistress of this household? Maki was stupid enough to go against Tetsu and Mariko but she wasn’t. She wasn’t going to be like Maki and submit to a wedding without a groom. If anything, she was going to be the mistress of this household and Pi will be the master.
But Yui carefully covered her thoughts with her smiley face. “Yea, we used to be able to talk till morning on nights that Kame wasn’t home.”
Why is it that Maki feels as though there was a sharpness in Yui’s words, threatening to cut her. Perhaps she was thinking too much.
Yui leads Maki over to tohe sitting area and offered her a seat, taking her own next to Maki’s.
“So tell me, what’s troubling you this time?” Yui was so direct it did not seem as though she was in the mood for a casual chat.
“I visited my mom today…”
“Ahh… okaasan, so how’s she?”
“She’s recovering pretty well…”
“That’s good to hear.”
“Yui… you know my mother?”
She had been too careless in addressing Maki’s mother so informally. “Ahh… I haven’t seen her yet but I feel as though she’s someone close. Perhaps it’s because you’ve told me much about her during our previous talks.” Yui brushed away any form of evidence that may show otherwise.
But Maki simply smiled serenely and it made her uncomfortable. It’s almost as if Maki knew that she was lying.
“Ano ne, today my mother was speaking of you.” Maki looked up at Yui for some sort of body language that might tell her something more than words could ever tell. Being in the service industry since young, Maki had developed the ability to tell what a person was feeling through their gestures. Be it as small as something such as shifting of their eyes or the tweak of their fingers. And right now, she could tell that Yui was getting nervous by the fact that she was shifting in her seat uncomfortably.
“Really?” Yui feigned ignorance, looking away.
“Don’t you want to know what she was talking about?”
She can’t go on like that, Maki was bound to know that there’s something wrong with her lack of care at being a topic of conversations. She quickly gathered herself and faced Maki, “So what did she say about me?” not forgetting to smile to show her enthusiasm.
“Nothing much really, after all I hadn’t really told her about you before.”
“Ohh…”
“But don’t you find it weird?”
“What is?” Yui looked curiously at Maki.
“That she knew you even though no one told her. How do you think it’s possible?”
Yui shifted uncomfortably again. “I don’t know.” She couldn’t stand the atmosphere now, it’s almost as if there are traps laid everywhere, waiting for her to step into it.
“At first I was as confused as you are. There was nobody whom my mother and you knew in common except for me. And I was sure that I wasn’t the one who told her about you…” Yui opened her mouth to argue that it could have been Pi, “Neither could it be Pi. I know him too well. That leaves only you, Yui… are you sure you have not visited my mom before?”
Yui lost the smile that was plastered on her face before. So Maki came here today to confront her? She stood up and walked over to the dressing table. “So what if I did. Is there anything wrong with it?” Yui asked, looking at Maki through the mirror on her dressing table. “I was the one who told her about my engagement to Pi, I was the one who told her Pi’s your brother-in-law. So what? Did I say anything wrong?”
“You told her I’m married!” Maki was shocked at Yui’s confession. Hiyono hadn’t said anything about it. If Hiyono had known that she had married to repay their debts, it was not possible that she said nothing about it. “You didn’t tell her why I married Kame, did you?”
“Did you think I would? That would make you seem selfless, wouldn’t it? You hope that I would tell your mom you did not marry Kame out of your own choice, then perhaps it would make it seem as though your affair with Pi is justified. Well let me tell you this. Truth is, I am the one who’s officially engaged to Pi. I am his official fiancée, and you are his official sister-in-law. I have more reason than anybody to keep Pi by my side!”
“You knew of our relationship! Why did you act as if you didn’t?!”
Yui smirked at Maki’s question. “Of course I knew, I knew it a long time ago. I didn’t want to expose you because I wanted to give you a chance to pull out. But you disappointed me once and again. I told you I loved him and wished for your best wishes, but you went behind my back and continued seeing Pi. I asked you to be my bridesmaid, and you ran away with my groom. Think of the things you have done to hurt me! Maki, do you still think that you are innocent?” Yui stood up from her dressing table and turned to face Maki. “And you come here tonight, thinking I’m the one who faulted you?!”
Maki raised her hands to cover her mouth, trying to control her sobs.
Shun’s voice rang in her head, ‘Some people are born betrayers, they do not feel guilt even after they have hurt the ones closest to them’. Was she that type of person? “I’m sorry, I didn’t know.” She didn’t know how much she had hurt Yui, she didn’t know Yui found out about her relationship with Pi, she didn’t know how deep Yui’s hatred for her was. She didn’t know… didn’t know… If she could even choose to control her heart, perhaps Yui wouldn’t have gotten hurt.
Yui laughed, “What did you not know? That I’m engaged to Pi? That you are is sister-in-law? You knew it Maki! You knew everything but you chose! You chose to treat everything else as nothing!”
“It’s not like that Yui… Pi and I… before you…” Maki tried to explain, but her sobs were disrupting her speech.
“Before I came into picture? But don’t forget, you’re married! And not to anyone else, but to his brother!”
In her anger, Yui swept the stuff on her table onto the floor. The shatter of glass alerted Pi who was still stationing outside.
He rushed into the room to see Maki crying and an angered Yui standing next to the floor of shattered glass. “Maki! Are you hurt?” he ran over to Maki and asked in a concerned voice.
“Ah… so that is why you came today,” Yui said sarcastically. “What do you want to prove? That no matter what I do, Pi only has eyes for you?”
“Enough already!” Pi bellowed.
“What did I say wrong! She’s your sister-in-law for goodness sake! There’s no future for both of you!” Yui screamed.
Unable to control his anger, Pi raised his hand to strike Yui but before he could do so, he felt a force tugging on him.
“Don’t!” When he turned back, he saw Maki pulling on him with all her strength.
He slowly lowered his hand, his chest rising and falling rapidly.
Yui didn’t dare speak anymore.
Only Maki’s soft cries could be heard in the room.
