Chapter 53

The Girl's like a Mirror

Beads of sweat formed at the top of her forehead, drenching the roots of her silky hair. Some strands of her side hair stuck to the side of her face. The dried up tears remained near the sides of her eyes. Her brows were slightly knitted together as if she was seeing something unpleasant through her closed eyes. Her slightly red and swollen lips slightly apart, a small voice escaping through her trembling lips.

“What have I done…what have I done…gomen ne… gomen…” Maki muttered repeatedly in her sleep.

He looked down upon her, his eyes full of love and pain. He ran the back of his hand softly along the side of her face, brushing the few strands of hair on the side of her face back in place.

It took him some time to coax her to sleep.

Poor Maki, always putting others before herself, always blaming herself for everything. She is so kind, so understanding, he didn’t understand how could anyone bear to even hurt her. After the confrontation with Yui, she hadn’t stopped blaming herself for Yui’s plight.

He sighed, recalling what happened after he brought Maki back to her room.

“What should we do... We’ve hurt Yui too much. If only we hadn’t started, if only we hadn’t we hadn’t met, maybe… maybe…”

“Listen Maki, we haven’t done anything wrong. Yui isn’t as weak as you think she is.”

“But she’s right, I betrayed her trust time and again. I had so many chances to stop myself, but I just went forward without caring for her feelings. Pi… don’t try to exonerate my wrongs. I’m guilty.. I know it…” the image of Pi blurred before her as tears welled up in her eyes again.

Pi shook Maki forcefully to wake her up, “Maki! Don’t fall into her trap! She’s trying to make you feel guilty! She’s our nightmare, everything she does is pushing us into each and every one of her traps. She’s not as easy as you think. Everything had been planned out waiting for us to fall into it. She’s a serpent, she’s sly, she’s evil!”

Maki raised her head slowly to look at Pi. She hadn’t expected such words to come from him. How could he say that? They were the ones who deserted Yui, if she’s evil then what about them? Her eyes grew distant like she was looking at a stranger. She withdrew herself from his hands and pushed him away. “You scare me. How can you say that of Yui? Even if she is as what you have said, we were the ones who made her that way! We forced her to change. You say she’s evil, but we are the ultimate cause of it! If loving you means destroying someone’s character then I don’t want it! I don’t want to love you anymore!”

Fear gripped his heart. This was exactly what he was afraid of… she doesn’t want to love him anymore… what did that mean? This was the end? No! He will not let the best thing that ever happened to him end like that. Pi rushed forward and pulled Maki into his arms, only by feeling her body presence in his arms, the fragrance of her hair sifting through his nose, will he feel calm.

“Don’t say that,” he pleaded. “Don’t say that you don’t want to love me anymore.” His pair of arms tightened around Maki as she struggled against him.

“Let go of me! Let go of me! You’re not the Pi I know! Who are you! Let go of me!” Maki cried weakly as she continued to struggle in his tight embrace, trying hard to push him away.

Pi didn’t know what else to do to calm her down. He pressed his lips firmly against hers, preventing her from saying anything more.

Maki turned her head trying to break away but was quickly subdued by Pi’s hands. After a while, her body start to soften in his embrace and she stopped struggling.

Feeling her body relaxing, he started to deepen his kiss, suckling on her upper lip.

His kiss worked like a magic charm, she felt as though an electric current was passed through her body from where he kissed her, numbing her every sensation.

He slowly lifted his lips off hers, and looked into her eyes sadly, “Don’t leave me…I’ll die.”

Maki remained silent for a long time, she didn’t know what to say. Just those simple words, it meant the world to her. She was so touched by the sincerity in his voice, his eyes. Those dark eyes that seemed to look into her soul, seen the ugliest side of her and yet still tell stories of love whenever he looked at her.

“Gomen…” she whispered after a long while. “But…”

Pi pressed her face onto his chest and breathed into her hair, “Don’t worry, I’ll make everything right. Believe me.”

Maki closed her eyes, exhausted from the events of the day.

---------------

Pi twisted open the door to Yui’s room, it was in a bigger mess than he remembered. Various things were strewn all across the floor. In the mess, he noticed her small figure beside the bed. Her head was buried in her lap and he realized she was crying when he saw the shaking of her shoulders.

He pushed the door wider and knocked into an object was in close proximity to the door. The noise startled Yui and she hastily wiped away her tears and turned around to face Pi bravely.

“What are you doing here, don’t you have to protect your princess from me?” Yui laughed bitterly, “or are you here to deal with me.” Her voice was trembling slightly from her uneven breathing after crying.

He really hated her or he used to hate her.

Because the girl that was standing before him now was clearly geared herself up to face him, trying so hard to hide her weaknesses and has put on a spiked armor that will prick any attacker to death. Then it suddenly dawned on him, that all this time she had been putting on this mask. Like an animal that was threatened, she was trying to fight back with all her might. Maki had been right, they were the ones who changed her.

He opened his mouth and said something that Yui had not expected.

“Gomen…”

Yui’s facial features started to soften at the word. She thought he was here to complete what he had failed to do in Maki’s presence. After all, it wouldn’t be the first time he striked her.

She pursed her lips, not knowing what to say of his strange attitude.

“Forgive me… forgive us for hurting you,” he continued.

She wasn’t stupid, there must be a reason behind this 180 degree change in his attitude.

“What are you playing at now,” Yui demanded.

“What will I have to do to get your forgiveness?”

Yui smirked at his words, she wasn’t going to be fooled by him. “I need something more than that Pi. Something that will prove your sincerity.”

The next thing Yui saw was Pi down on his knees. She took a step back, stunned by his act. He is the head of the biggest gang in Japan, never did he need to bow down to anyone. But here he is, kneeling before her, pleading for her forgiveness. She slowly inched over to him, willing herself to say something spiteful.

She rather have him up and treat her like he had been doing all along, it would have made hating him easier.

“What do you think you’re doing. Get up! You think I will be appeased this easily? Get up! Fight me!” With that she brought her hands down on his face, giving him a hard tight slap. Five finger marks slowly showed on his face. It hurts. Her hand hurts a lot, but her heart hurts even more. She knew this logic, whenever you strike you hurt yourself too. All this time, she lashed out again and again, ignoring the pain in her heart because she didn’t want to be the one to get hurt at the end. Ironically, at this time she was probably the one who was bruised the most. She was suffering from the backlash of her attacks. She was bruised all over and yet she pushed on because it was too late for regrets. She didn’t know why whenever she saw Pi and Maki she will think of their betrayal and then she would turn into a porcupine, hurting anyone that tried to hurt her. She hadn’t really mean to hurt Maki but everytime she saw her, her rationality seems to always leave her.

Yui continued raining her punches continuously onto him.

Pi simply closed his eyes, taking all her blows. If it made her feel better, he wouldn’t mind being a punching bag.

Finally she stopped.

“Go! Just go! I don’t want to see you!” her breathing heavy from all the energy she had exhausted.

Pi got up silently and left the room.

After he was gone, Yui stood up from her position and walked over to the dressing table. She looked at herself in the mirror. Her hair was disheveled and her lips were bleeding, her eyes was brimming with tears. She couldn’t feel the pain of her biting her lips to stop herself from crying. She reached out her hand to touch the mirror.

In a trembling voice, she asked, “Okaasan, I’m like a mirror right?”

As if her mother did answer her, she heard her voice, “Yui, remember this. Be like a mirror. Treat others well as they have treated you, and hurt them as much as they have hurt you.”

Thinking back, her twisted character came about after the night Pi had kissed her coldly, chilling her to her bones.

“But mother, I’m too tired to go on anymore.”
