"This is good," Yamapi said, indicating the food he is eating.
"Are you listening?" Maki asked, exasperation clearly shown on her face. "I really don't have time for this." Maki stood up abruptly and left the table. As she passed Yamapi, he put out his hand to stop her.
"Can't you accompany me until I finish my meal? I'm about to finish soon."
Maki looked down at his plate, she had to admit he was a fast eater. He had almost finished all the food in just 5 minutes. "No harm in waiting 1 or 2 more minutes," she thought. She walked back to the seat she was sitting on earlier. Yamapi was clearly glad at her action, he smiled at her before gulping down the rest of his food.
------
"Hold on, I'll be right back," Yamapi told Maki before they entered the lift. Yamapi zoomed off and in less than 5 minutes, he came running back with a bouquet of flowers. He then pointed at it and said, "It's only polite to bring flowers when visiting a patient right?"
Maki smiled, "This guy can be cute sometimes," she thought.
Together, they made their way towards Maki's mother's room. Just before they reach the room, Maki held Yamapi back. "I did not tell her anything about the marriage, and I hope she'll not find out about it. Promise me you wouldn't say anything inappropriate okay?"
Yamapi looked at her and nodded. They then entered the room together.
Maki's mother was surprised to see a guy entering the room together with maki. "This is?" she asked.
"Ummm..." Maki hadn't really thought of how to reply.
Maki's mother noticed Maki's uneasiness and thought that Yamapi must be more than just a simple friend. "Is he your boyfriend? Silly girl, there's nothing to be shy about this. You can just tell okasan you know."
Maki immediately opened her mouth to explain but before she could say anything, Yamapi held on to her hand and said, "It's because we just met some time ago, she might be unsure about our relationship. But I can reaffirm you that I'm serious about her."
Maki's mother's face broke into a huge smile. "Come over here," she waved to Yamapi to sit on the chair beside her bed. "Let me take a good look at you."
Yamapi walked over and sat down. "A very good-looking young man, I see." Maki's mother looked into Yamapi's eyes, "A set of very kind eyes," she continued. She flipped Yamapi's palms over, "A pair of big and gentle hands." She returned her gaze to Yamapi's face, and said in a soft whisper, just loud enough for Yamapi to hear, "I know she'll be in good hands with you. Maki's really a fragile girl. Promise me you'll be good to her, always."
"Okasan! I'm your real daughter right? Why are you paying attention to him instead?" Maki protested.
Maki's mother laughed. "Oh no, our princess is jealous."
"I'm not a princess, I'm just a cinderella who would never meet her prince."
"Who says so, isn't your prince right here?" Maki's mother asked. "And Maki will be the most beautiful princess ever, right?"
"Right," Yamapi replied. He turned to look at Maki, "And I'll be the most charming prince ever."
Maki looked at her mother, she clearly seemed to be enjoying herself. All Maki can do now is to play along.
------
"Hey, what did my mother say to you just now?" Maki asked Yamapi on the way home.
"She entrusted you to me," he looked over and Maki and said,"I'm so envious of you, being able to be with your mother is such a blissful thing."
Maki recalled the oil painting in Yamapi's room. "Is he thinking of his mother now?" she thought.
"Can I visit your mother on my own from now?" Yamapi asked.
"Sure, she'll be glad to have company too." Maki smiled.
Yamapi stopped in his tracks as Maki continued walking. When she's some distance away, he shouted, "Can I call her okasan?"
In front of her mother, he's her boyfriend. If he calls her okasan, wouldn't that make him her husband? "Are you serious?" she couldn't believe it.
"Who knows..." he shrugged.
