Chapter 8

Confusion

"Kame!" A voice called.

Kame slowly opened his eyes to look at the person calling him.

"Kame!" the voice sounded again.

"Ah, Ayase. How long was I out?" Kame asked

"2 hours." Ayase replied

"How can I help you?" Kame rubbed his temple, he was having a splitting headache.

"I'm here to pass a message from the director. Is it true that you haven't gone home in a week?" she couldn't believe someone could stay at work for one whole week.

"What's the message?" Kame tried to divert the conversation back to the director.

"He knows that you have been here for a week, so he wanted you to go home immediately. He said that he couldn't leave any patients in your care given your current state."

"I'm fine, really." Kame sat up in his chair and tried to clear his head a little.

"He knew you would say that, so he asked me to see you home personally."

"How can I bother the director's daughter like that? I'll go home myself."

"Why not?" Ayase challenged. She pulled Kame out of the chair and headed out through the door.

------

"I'm home," Kame called.

Mariko walked out to receive Kame, "So you finally bear to leave the hospital? I thought that would be your new home already." Mariko was happy at her son's return but she couldn't help but chide him a little. "We have a guest?" she noticed Ayase behind Kame.

"This is Ayase, daughter of the director of the hospital I'm working in.

"Ahh, Ayase, nice to meet you." Mariko smiled.

"Good evening. You must be Kame's elder sister."

Mariko chuckled, "I'm his mother actually."

"Really!" Ayase gasped. "But you look so young!"

Mariko was clearly ecstatic at Ayase's comment. "What a sweet mouth you have. Come on in," Mariko took Ayase by her hand and led her into the living room. Kame walked in behind them.

"Sit down, I'll make some tea for you," Mariko walked into the kitchen where she whispered some orders to the women in business suit. "Bring young mistress down."

------

Mariko walked back to the living room with a teaset in her hands.

"Wow, my mom actually used her favourite teaset. You're quite a big shot I must say," Kame said jokingly to Ayase.

"Of course," Mariko said, while taking Ayase's hands, "I've taken a liking to her when I saw her just now. It's like we've known each other in our past lives."

Ayase smiled at Mariko sweetly.

Just then, Maki came into the room. She greeted Mariko with a bow and said, "I heard you're looking for me?"

Mariko immediately kept her smile. "We have a guest as you can see," Mariko indicated to Ayase. Ayase turned to smile at Maki. "This is Ayase, daughter of the director of the hospital Kame's working at."

"Hello, nice to meet you," Ayase stuck out her hand.

Maki gave her a handshake. "I'm..." she tried to introduce herself as well.

"This is Maki," Mariko interrupted. "She is Kame's...cousin. Her mother's in the hospital, so she's come to stay for us for a short while."

Both Kame and Maki looked confused at the introduction.

But unknown to them, another pair of eyes was watching them from afar. Yamapi was confused at Mariko's words as well. Cousin? Wasn't she his sister-in-law. What he know of Maki's status from the past week shouldn't be wrong. Everyone in the household knew Maki was wife of Kame.
