"Do you know why I called you here?" Mariko asked Maki in a firm voice.
"Other than what happened just now, I suppose you have no other reason to see me." Maki said in a matter-of-fact tone.
"A bright girl i see," Mariko scoffed. "In that case, try telling me why I told Ayase you're Kame's cousin."
Maki remained silent
"Bright...but not enough." Mariko said."The reason why I told her you're his cousin is to let you know your stand in this house. Frankly, I wasn't keen on the idea of Kame marrying an unknown girl like yourself. But since it was Tetsu's idea, I believe he has his reasons for it. Just because you were personally picked by him to be the daughter-in-law of this household, that does not mean that you have a special status here. You are only a tool of Tetsu to give us a grandson.The daughter-in-law status is only within the gang and this household, outside of this household, you are but just an unrelated person. So don't think that you are are pitiful because you are forced into this because having the gang know that you are married to Kame is already the ultimate kindness we have shown to you. You should be grateful to us, we are paying for your dad's debt and mother's hospital fees. So if you have even the least conscience you should know what to do."
Yamapi heard all that Mariko said and he recalled the time when he first came into this house. Just like Maki, Mariko called to see Yamapi when he moved into the house.
"So you're the b*****d son of that woman. Letting you step inside this house is my mercy. Do not think that you're on equal status as my son. Even though you're both Tetsu's son, he is the only recognized one. To me, you're lower than the servants here. If you even have shame, don't let me see you around the house."
Shivers ran down Yamapi's spine as he recalled the past. He could still remember Mariko's face that time. She looked at him as if he was the most detestful creature ever on earth.
"I have never thought of myself as pitiful. I have my dignity. You may think i'm just a tool, that is up to you. It is your brain and I can do nothing about it. But to me, I deserve as much respect a person can get in this house, not as a daughter-in-law but as a human. Neither have I thought that I was "special", I don't consider it my luck to have been "selected" by Tetsu. As for what I am supposed to do, I'll be frank that I have not prepared myself yet. If you have been unhappy with my performance you could ask Tetsu to find another girl, I'm sure I'm not the only one he can threaten."
"As Tetsu said, you've got guts little girl. Perhaps you aren't afraid for yourself, but as a filial daughter I'm sure you wouldn't want any harm to your mother either."
Maki stared at Mariko. Only a woman such as Mariko could fit as Tetsu's wife, they are so much alike.
Outside, Yamapi thought of what he had just overheard.So Maki is just a daughter-in-law in name. "A tool to give us a grandson..." That was what Mariko said. But Maki seemed like she did not accept that idea. For some unknown reason, perhaps because both of them are hated by Mariko, he felt that he had to help her, to protect her.
