He excused himself quietly and went on the balcony. Still looking at the ringing phone, he played with the thought to ignore the call, but he decided against it, since it wasn't fair towards Erika.
„Yes?“ he said finally after pushing the green button.
„Hey Ryo! It's me, Erika“ she said, sounding slightly nervous.
Without waiting for his reply, she went on. „Can we meet? I want to talk about yesterday.“
Ryo bit his lip and stayed silent for a while, thinking of what to say. What he did yesterday was definitely against his former decision, not to start something with Erika. He would just hurt her if the operation failed.
„Yesterday?...You know, i don't remember anything. Did something happen?“ Ryo lied. He could still remember their kiss clearly. Erika stayed silent for a while.
„Erika?“ he asked concerned, after several seconds of silence.
„Eh?...Oh, then it's okay. We'll talk about it later. Could you hand the phone to Yui? I want to talk to her for a sec.“ she said laughing nervously.
„Alright, see you later“ Ryo said, relieved that the matter was solved.
He went back to the living room and steered in Yui's direction.
„Here. Erika wants to talk with you“ Ryo said and gave her the cellphone.
After that was done Ryo went back to the balcony, leaning against the rail and taking in the view of Nagoya.
He didn't regret lying to Erika. He knew it wasn't fair, but he definitely thought it would be better to keep a distance. Friends was alright with him, but love was certainly forbidden.
He promised himself not to ever drink alcohol in Erikas company again, he knew something like that would happen again.

Yui and Erika had arranged to meet at a cafè on that afternoon. Her new friend hadn't told her, what she wanted to talk about, but Yui was sure it had something to do with Ryo.
Both of them behaved strangely, when it came to the other, ever since yesterday. Ryo avoided talking about Erika and Erika herself, seemed confused.
Was it possible that something happened between them? Even though Ryo was that certain about not starting a relationship with her?
She reached the cafè at exactly 3 o'clock, their promised meeting time. She went inside, sat down at a free table and ordered something for her an Erika to drink. She would come any minute anyway.
When Erika came a minute later, they greeted each other cheerfully and made a bit small talk, before it came to the more serious part of the conversation.
„I've already ordered for the both of us“ Yui said smiling.
„Thanks...You know...I wanted to talk to you about Ryo.“ Erika finally said after staying silent for a long moment.
„I have already assumed that this was about Ryo.“ Yui admitted, but didn't say anything else.
„Yesterday I was out drinking with him, Yamapi and two of his co-workers. They drank a lot. I'm sure you've already noticed. Well, somewhen Ryo went out to get some fresh air and since i was worried i followed him. We kind of...ended up kissing each other.“ Erika told her, smiling to herself at the memory and touching her lips unconsciously. She was acting like a high school kid getting kissed by her crush for the first time. She just didn't squeal.
„You kissed?“ Yui asked surprised.
Erika was a bit confused because of her tone.
„It's not that you two don't match or that Ryo doesn't feel something for you. It's just...“ she didn't finish that thought, but distracted her with a different question. „What happened after that? You talked with him on the phone about it right?“
„Yes, he said he doesn't remember“ Erika said sulking.
Yui sighed. It was exactly as she imagined it.
„I'm not supposed to tell you this. But i'm sure you deserve to know.“ Yui started. The bad conscience already evident on her face.
„Ryo loves you, that's for sure. He definitely didn't forget about your kiss. But he is determined not to start a relationship with someone. He is afraid of hurting you.“ Yui explained.
Erika looked at her surprised. „He lied on purpose? To keep a distance to me? Why would he refrain from having a relationship? Because of his disease?“ she asked.
„Yes...You know that there is a chance of it worsening again, right? I think it's because of that. He never clearly told us, but i think that's the reason.“ Yui explained.
„But that's rubbish. He doesn't know if the disease worsens at all!“ Erika said enraged.
Yui just smiled emphatically at her. She didn't like the things Ryo did either, but he tried to understand him.
Ryo had to live with this uncertainty of living or dying everyday. She imagined it to be very hard.
„What should i do?“ Erika asked, hoping her advice would help her.
After thinking for a moment Yui answered.
„I think you should have a talk with him. Tell him your true feelings. Maybe it works and he goes against his decision, maybe not, but you shouldn't give up trying. It's not good for him either to suppress his feelings.“ Yui advised, giving the impression of a mature girl again, not the childish one she seemed to be.
„How is it going with Haruma?“ Erika asked after a minute of silence in order to change the topic.
Yui's smile faded a bit, but she was able to put it back into place, before Erika noticed it. Or so she thought.
„It's going well“ Yui said, without going into detail at all. Haruma hadn't hit her again after the last time, but everytime she spoke about Yuta or Ryo, he got pissed and sometimes yells at her. Their relationship really suffered under her friendship with Yuta and Ryo.
But she was sure that her two friends were more important to her. If Haruma forced her to choose, she would knew whom to select.
„I'm glad“ Erika said, even though she was a bit suspicious of Yui's sudden change in mood.
„You know what? Yuta started going out with a colleague of mine.“ Erika suddenly said and surprised Yui looked at her. „Really?“ she asked and Erika nodded.
She wasn't sure if she was glad or sad about the fact, that her friend finally dated other girls. Since a few years ago he had liked her now and even though she didn't feel that way towards him, she had liked the attention she got from him. Now after hearing that he got a girlfriend, she felt kind of lonely.
„Are you jealous?“ Erika asked surprised after seeing her reacting that way.
It always seemed like Yui had no interest in him, but now it seemed different.
„Jealous? Never!“ Yui said determined, but somehow the word got stuck in her head anyway.
Was she jealous?
