Chapter 22

Ryo went back home and found Yui and Yuta making breakfast for them. It was weekend, so the two of them had no work to do. Normally Yui would go to eat breakfast with Haruma, but somehow lately she wasn't meeting him anymore. He didn't want to question her about it, since it wasn't really his business, but he was a little bit worried that he might have dumbed her.

But when he came in, she was as cheerful as ever.
„Morning!“ she greeted him loudly with a smiling face.
„How about inviting Erika and Yamapi today?“ Ryo asked.
Today he wanted to tell them everything, he thought it was time to do it and that he couldn't postpone it any longer. But the prospect of explaining it more often wasn't really appealing, so he decided to bring them all together, when he told them.

The two gave their okay and Ryo excused himself for a minute on the balcony. He called them and asked if they felt like coming today, and they agreed. Yamapi noticed the kind of nervous tone in Ryo's voice though, but he just asked if something was wrong, he didn't press him any further. And Ryo was grateful for that.
After that he called Yuta's father and told him that he won't be able to pay him the next few months, because of the surgery.
He was as understanding as always and encouraged him to take this surgery optimistically. He would come when the time came as well.

Ryo was really grateful for everything Yuta's father did for him. Since he came to the hospital in Hokkaido and befriended Yuta, his father had somehow come to care for him like a real father too. First he had been sure it was just pity, because his parents left him, but after some time he understood, that it wasn't just that. It wasn't just the money that bounded them, it was also something else.

He leaned against the railing, cellphone in his hands and listened to music. When the singer began the refrain Ryo joined in as well. Not as loud as he does usually, because it was still early in the morning, but it still gave him a feeling of excitement.

„futari sugoshita hibi dake ga ima mo kagayaita mama
tojikometa omoi ga tokiori kono mune ni uzumakunda
chiisa na uso mo ego mo kizu mo yurushiaeta nara
ima demo soba de waratteta kana“

[Translation: the days that only you and I spent together are still shining now
the thoughts that were shut in are sometimes spinning in my heart
the small lies and the egos and the wounds if we could forgive them all
even now I wonder if you would still be smiling by my side]

„Nice, Nii-chan.“ Yui commented when she came to the door of the balcony.
„Thanks“ Ryo said smiling.
„Breakfast is done, so when you've finished your calls come eat with us.“ she said before she went back in. When she was out of sight Ryo pressed his hand against his chest. Even though he only sang a little bit it was already pumping faster.
„A good decision I quit my job“ he thought, trying to see the optimistic side as Erika had advised him to.
When his heart had calmed down he went back into the room and ate breakfast with his two friends.

In the afternoon the three of them were sitting in front of the TV, watching some kind of variety show. After finishing breakfast that morning the three of them went to the Konbini to buy ingredients for the dinner, Erika and Yamapi would come to, so they needed more than usual.
Satomi hadn't been there anymore and the owner told him she had taken the rest of the day off. Ryo had been a bit confused by that action of her. Had it hurt her that much that she couldn't work anymore? He always thought she was strong in mind. Not caring about what others thought or said, even though it was quite cruel sometimes. But Ryo quickly brushed it off his mind.

Now they were waiting for their guests. Just when the commercial break started the doorbell rang, announcing Yamapi and Erika.
Ryo got up and let them in. He opened the door and waited for them to arrive with the elevator. When they did he greeted them with a short „Hi“ and gave Erika a brief kiss on the cheek, making her smile.
They went to the living room together and the greetings continued until all of them finished and sat down on the couch.

They talked casually, watched the rest of the variety show and laughed a lot until it was time to start making dinner. As always Ryo took the opportunity to show off with his cooking skills. That's what Yui likes to call it, the truth was Ryo just liked cooking a lot. Erika offered to help again and the two of them disappeared into the kitchen.

They talked quietly while they worked, since they didn't want the others to hear about it yet.
„I'm going to tell them today, after dinner.“ he said to her and she turned to look at him, smiling at him encouragingly.
„It's the right decision, trust me. I don't think they'll treat you any different if you confess it. It will give you strength to be supported by them.“
Ryo just smiled back. They didn't say anything else for the next couple of minutes. They just cut the vegetables and meat, fried them and continued following the rest of the Curry recipe.
After a bit more than half an hour they were done and asked the others to set up the table and sit down.
They ate together, again talking and laughing a lot while complimenting Ryo and Erika every now and them for their good cooking skills.

When they were done, they sat down in the living room again. Erika, Ryo and Yui on the Couch and the other two on armchairs.
Ryo took a deep breath, intending to start now with his explanation. When Erika sensed it, she took his hand in hers and smiled at him again encouragingly, making him feel less nervous immediately.
Yamapi saw this interaction, their two expressions and looked at them a little bit confused.
„What's wrong?“ Yamapi asked, like he had on the phone and Ryo stayed silent for a while, trying to figure out how to start.
„I told you about my disease right?“ he said, not really expecting an answer but making a break nonetheless.

„I told you that there's a possibility of it worsening. The truth is, when I told you about it, it was already beginning to get worse again. They told me I should have a second surgery. If it succeeds, I'll get rid of it forever. If not...well...I'll die.“ Erika grabbed his hand a bit more tightly, as if showing him she was by his side. He didn't look up to the the other's reaction, but they didn't make a sound.

„The surgery was sheduled for fall first. But I was at the hospital for my check up yesterday and the doctor told me it already got really bad and that they have to postpone the surgery. It'll probably be end of July now.“ he concluded his explanation, adding the little bit's he had spoken to his doctor about on the phone. He looked up.
Yui was staring at him with a kind of shocked face. Yuta looked at his knees and he couldn't see his expression. Yamapi on the other hand looked him right in the eye with a kind of „like I thought“ look on his face.

„Why didn't you tell us?“ Yui was the first one to find her voice. „I mean...we're friends aren't we? More than that! We two are like siblings.“ she said, her voice breaking more with each word and tears starting to fall down her face. Ryo turned around to her and saw her big disappointed eyes filled with tears. He hated seeing her cry when she was always that cheerful.
„Yui“ he just said weakly, still not really good with crying girls.
„She's right. You hid it the whole time and now, so suddenly without a warning you are saying those things. How are we supposed to react?“ Yuta said then, looking up at his friend.
Ryo didn't answer and just bit his lip.

Yamapi still stayed silent and just looked at him with a calm look.
„And I quit my job“ Ryo added suddenly when he remembered, making Yui laugh a bit between her tears.
„You know, you could have used that as an introduction. Like: „Hey guys, I quit my job“ we would have said: „Why, why? Didn't you want to work no matter what?“ and then you would have a perfect start for your explanation.“ she said grinning, remembering his long silence before the talk.
Ryo smiled at her, knowing that he was forgiven for not telling her.
„It'll go well“ Yuta just said then, getting over his disappointment.
„You're a fighter after all.“ Yamapi added and Ryo smiled at them brightly, his heart overflowing with warmth.
