Chapter 28

“Let's go to the beach!” Erika suggested suddenly when she entered Ryo's home, without providing him a chance to greet her.
“To the beach?” Ryo asked her sceptically. “Why so suddenly?”
“I just wanted to see it again, with you. And somehow today I just felt like it. So, do you want to go?”
Ryo thought for a while, but he didn't find anything that spoke against it and he really wanted to go with her.

He smiled at her and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
“Alright, as you wish. Give me a few minutes and I'll be ready.”
She smiled brightly at him and followed him to his room, where he packed a few things like medicine, keys and cellphone into his bag.
Erika smiled sadly at him when he took out the medicine.
“It will be great when you don't need to take these with you again, won't it?”
Ryo just smiled at her without saying anything.
For him a future without his illness and medicine was still too good to be true.

“Let's go then. How are we going to get there?” He asked.
“I brought Hiroki's car. We'll go with it. And I packed a picnic bag.” she said smiling brightly.
“You didn't even consider that I could say no, right?” he said laughing and she nodded cheerfully.
“Even if you said no, I could still go with my secret affair.” she added.
“Well, then it's a good idea I said yes. I wouldn't want to lose you to someone because of the beach.”
“Don't make the beach sound so ordinary! It's a special place for me.”
Ryo just patted her head smiling and went out of the door before her.

At the parking space they found Hiroki's dark red car.
“His parent's bought it for him. It's a bit old, but still nice”
Ryo just nodded and opened the right door of the car.
“I drive.” she said quickly. “Hiroki is really...sensitive when it comes to his car.”
Ryo nodded and held the door open for her to get in.

The way took them about 3 hours. Much too long for Ryo's liking, but when they finally saw the first signs of the sea, he got excited as well.
Erika smiled when she saw his excitement rising. She knew very well that he had liked the sea as well, since they had often gone there in their high school days.
They parked the car and got the picnic bag, before making their way to the water. A few meters away from it they lay the blanket on the ground and sat down.

“Nostalgic. I really missed the sea. It's been a wile since i've last been here.” Erika admitted, closed her eyes and smelled the salty air.
Ryo nodded and put an arm around her shoulders.
When she noticed it she inched closer to him and leaned her head against his shoulder.
“Let's go here again after you've recovered from the surgery, okay?” she suggested.

Ryo just smiled at her optimistic view, but didn't answer.
“Okay?” she asked again for verification.
“Okay” he said defeated.
“You don't believe that you'll survive the surgery.” Erika stated and sat up to look him in the eye.
He avoided her eyes, but she could read it easily in his face.
“It just seems to good to be true...that possibility.” he admitted.
“We're all going to support you, don't forget that...But still, how can you survive when you don't believe in it yourself?”
Ryo didn't answer. He wanted to believe, but he just couldn't. When he formed the sentence in his head, it already sounded like a lie to him.

“I can't help it.” he said finally and looked in her eyes.
“You have the best doctors, since you're backed up by the head of a huge hospital in Hokkaido. You have the support of all your friends. And you survived the last one as well. And back then you made it without Yamapi and me. Now we're here and you should be able to make this surgery as well, since you know we two will kick you ass in heaven if you died.” Erika almost yelled at him, tears forming in her eyes.
When he heard what she said an saw her tearful eyes he felt a warm fuzzy feeling welling up in him. He smiled at her and pulled her into an hug.

“You just have to survive...I wouldn't know what do you if you didn't” she sobbed in his shirt and he just rubbed her back softly.
They stayed like this for a while until he noticed that her sobbing lessened.
“You're right...When I'm discharged from hospital the first thing we'll do together is see the sea okay? But this time I'll prepare something to take with us.” He promised and kissed the top of her head.

Later that day Yui and Yuta went to meet with Yamapi and Masami in a bar.
At first it had been planned that Erika, Ryo and Nana would be there as well, but Erika and Ryo were still at the beach and Nana couldn't make it, because she still had a lot of work to do.
They had almost reached their destination when Yuta started the topic, she had avoided at all cost.
“Are you really alright? You're really acting strange...It has really nothing to do with Haruma?” he asked after they had walked a while in silence.
“No, I'm alright. Just tired, I guess” she said as convincingly as possible and smiled at him softly.

“You sure?” he asked and Yui was glad that the bar came into view.
“Yes, don't worry! Everything alright.” she reassured him, but he still suspected she was hiding something.
They went into the bar and already saw Masami and Yamapi there with two beer in front of them. As they sat down they ordered two beer as well and greeted the two.

Yui did her best to forget Haruma and act cheerful, but everytime she thought about him she would get goosebumps.
When she looked at Yamapi, after having thought of herself using him as an excuse, she saw that he had noticed her behavior.
Now he was looking rather irritated at her.
After a while she had finished her second glass of beer and started to slowly forget about her worries and enjoy herself.

They talked a lot about various things. The waitress, Work, Erika and Ryo, The past, vacations, shopping...everything they could think of.
Then Yui excused herself to go to the bathroom, Masami went with her fullfilling the clichè of “girls never go alone to the toilet”.
Yamapi used this chance to ask Yuta about Yui's strange behavior.
“Did something happen? Yui's acting a bit strange.”
Yuta seemed to sober up the minute he heard him.
“Yeah, she is, isn't she? She's like this since after the festival. Nana and I saw her on our way back and Haruma was with her. I thought they broke up, but I don't know what to think know.”

When Yamapi heard that it was about Haruma his eyes narrowed. It couldn't be that he still bothered her?
The two women came back, giggling about something Masami had said earlier.
“Excuse me for a minute okay?” Yamapi said to Masami after she had sat down.
He went to Yui, grabbed her wrist and pulled her out of the bar.
On the street he let go of her.

“Whats wrong with you?” she yelled at him and rubbed her wrist, which he had grabbed so tightly.
“Are you going out with him again? With Haruma?” He asked her directly without beating around the bush.
“What...What are you talking about? Of course not!” she said honestly and he could see that she told the truth.
“Then why were you with him on the festival? Yuta saw you two, he told me”Yamapi explained.
Yui bit her lip.

“He didn't hit you again, did he?” he asked and still Yui remained silent.
“He did? I can't believe it!” he said loudly, but Yui shook her head.
“No, he didn't...Truth is, my date stood me up, so I walked around alone. And then he approached me. He told me he had … he had followed me, all the time...When he said that, I was so…so scared.” she admitted and tears fell down her face. “So scared”
“He asked me to be with him again, but I refused...After I went away, he still followed me...stalked me.”
“Yui...” Yamapi said weakly and handed a handkerchief to her.
“Don't you think it's time to tell the others?” he asked, but she shook her head violently.
“I don't want them to know.”
He looked at her with pitiful eyes and pulled her into a hug.
All the feelings she had bottled up were freed when she felt the warmth of his embrace.

They didn't notice Masami coming out.
“Yamapi! What keeps you so long? I -” she broke off suddenly when he saw him hugging her.
“Oh” she just said and her eyes widened.
Yamapi let go of Yui slowly and looked at Masami.
“It's not what it seems like” he assured her, but she just arched an eyebrow at him.
“It's not? What is it then?”
“I just...” he stopped, thinking how he could explain to her the best what he was doing without giving away Yui's problems and worries.
“It's kind of hard to explain.” he said and scratched the back of his head.

“What's going on?” Yuta asked when he came out as well.
“I'm in progress of finding out what is going on between Yamapi and Yui.” Masami answered him and Yuta's eyes widened at this.
“There's nothing going on between us!” Yamapi said exasperated, but Masami didn't believe him.
“I'm leaving” she said suddenly and went to get her bag. When she came out Yamapi followed her.
“I'll take you home.”
“No need!”
“No arguments!”

Yuta watched them leave before he went to Yui, who had red eyes from crying.
“What happened?” he asked, but she just shook her head.
Yuta sighed and went into the bar to get their things and pay.
When he got out again Yui was standing at the exact same place, without having moved at all.
“Let's go home.” he said.
