He approached her and almost immediately noticed she was crying.
His eyes widened at the realization, his bad thoughts soming back to him.
What had happened?
“Yui?” he called out to her softly in order not to startle her.
She lifted her head in surprise, after having recognized his voice.
He saw that her eyes were red and puffy from the large amount of tears she had shed.
She didn't even try to hide the fact that she had been crying, something she would normally do in order not to make him worry.
He sat down next to her slowly and just stayed silent without questioning her at all.
Something he would usually do first But now he only stayed by her side.
Yui seemed to be confused by that.
“You don't want to ask what's wrong?” she asked him while staring at the ground.
“Not if you don't want to talk.” he said simply.
She stayed silent for a while again and Yuta didn't even expect her to talk anymore, thinking his strategy had failed, but then he heard her voice again.
“Yamapi got stabbed...” Yui said, her voice breaking slightly at the last word.
“stabbed?” Yuta asked horror showing on his face.
“Yeah...It was Haruma.” Yui continued.
Again Yuta stayed silent. Surprised by the answer, but he didn't want to pressure her.
“It's all my fault. It's my fault that Yamapi is like this now and it would be my fault if Haruma has to face jail now. I shouldn't have told him I fell for Yamapi. I really shouldn't have told him that. I knew that the things he does are unpredictable.” she stood up and faced him now.
Tears were falling down her face again.
Yuta was a quite confused about what she said and he tried to make sense of it, but she left him no time to think about it.
“I didn't … I didn't expect him to be the jealous type. That he would actually get jealous enough to ... hit me.”
His head shot up at her words and he looked at her with a look you could easily call shocked.
“That's the reason why I broke up with him. After he did it the first time I was so scared of him. He came to look for me in the cafe and Yamapi was there as well. He somehow noticed and kind of saved me from him. Outside we talked. I made him promise not to tell anyone. I'm really sorry I didn't tell you. I just … I just wanted to cope with it myself. I didn't want to depend on you and Ryo anymore. You two had your own troubles to deal with.” she continued, relief flooding into her when she finally told someone about everything.
“I didn't hear from him for a few weeks, but when I met him at the festival he said he had followed me all the time. He asked for a second chance and promised he wouldn't do something like hitting me anymore. He...even kissed me...forcefully. I just told him that I loved Yamapi. He would leave me alone then I thought, but it didn't work. Today we arrive here and hear that Yamapi was stabbed by him...It's my fault, entirely. I shouldn't have told him that! I shouldn't -” she was ranting but suddenly stopped when Yuta stood up and pulled her into a hug.
Inside he was boiling with anger, so much that he was shaking, but he knew it wasn't the right time.
She grabbed his shirt with her hands and sobbed into his chest.
Both didn't say anything and the only things Yuta heard were her sobbing and the wind.
He rubbed her back encouragingly and let her get rid of her bottled up feelings.
After a while the sobbing stopped slowly and she got a step away from him.
“I...”she started but Yuta shook his head.
“Let's go and look how Yamapi is doing, alright?” he suggested with a calm voice and Yui agreed smiling sadly.
:::
Yamapi still hadn't woken up even after 5 hours had passed.
In the meantime Erika had went back to work with the promise to come back when her shift was over.
Masami had left a while ago to catch some fresh air on the roof and Hiroki, who came an hour ago, followed her.
Ryo was now the only one who stayed with Yamapi. Somehow he felt sorry for him.
He had many friends, but apparently he would be the only one there when he woke up.
He couldn't help but ask himself if it would be like this with him as well.
Would Erika be the only one to wait for him to wake up after the surgery?
He was also confused why Yamapi's parents hadn't come yet.
He remembered his mother as a really kind woman who cared for Yamapi the most and loved to fuss over him.
His father had always played the tough guy, but in secret he would worry for his son every time he left the house.
It really confused him that they hadn't arrived yet, since they were really devoting parents.
Easily he could picture the two of them literally jump in the car immediately when they heard about it from Erika.
With that picture in mind he was surprised by the door being opened.
He almost expected to see his parents when Erika entered the room with a soft smile on her face, that faltered when she saw Yamapi.
“He still hasn't woken up?” she asked worried and sat down on a chair next to Ryo, both beside the bed.
Ryo just shook his head.
“Masami and Yui?”
“Masami is on the roof to get some fresh air and Yui hasn't come back yet. It's been a few hours and she was acting weird, somehow I'm worried.” he answered, said worry evident on his face.
“You can go look for her if you want, I'll stay with him.” she said then.
“No, It's alright. I'll stay.”
She just smiled and took Yamapi's hand in hers.
A moment they stayed in silence and just watched Yamapi's chest going up and down.
“You know...I wondered about something.” Ryo started and steered his gaze away from Yamapi to Erika, who turned her attention to him as well with a questioning expression on her face.
“Did you...call his parents?” he asked and her face fell when she heard the question.
She seemed to think for a while before she answered.
“No, I didn't.” she said slowly as if choosing her words carefully. “They...died... In a car crash.”
Ryo opened his mouth to say something, but he didn't know what to say, so he closed it again.
Thinking that the two people he had known for quite a long time, who had treated him like part of a family when he was there, had died...It was a shock for him.
He was brought out of his thoughts by the rustling of the bedsheets.
When he turned his head to look at Yamapi he saw sad eyes staring into his.
“I'm sorry … I didn't tell you.” Yamapi said in a kind of raspy voice.
He wondered whether to tell him about the circumstances of their death, but he decided not to. Ryo would only think it's his fault and Yamapi didn't want him to think about things like that.
“How are you feeling?” Erika asked worried. She wanted to know the answer but she was also eager to change the topic.
Yamapi just grimaced at her, as if questioning how she would feel when she got stabbed.
Erika scolded him for getting himself stabbed and Yamapi threw back random comments.
All in all it was a very lively conversation.
Ryo on the other hand didn't participate.
He was lost in thoughts about the death of Yamapi's parents.
When he thought that Yamapi had to deal with his leaving and the death of his parents simultaneously, he felt really bad for disappearing that suddenly. If he had only stayed a bit longer to be a friend to him in his tough times...
He asked himself what would have happened if he had told them about his disease or if he had at least lied to them about his reasons for moving away.
He could have told them that it was because of his fathers job and then, when his condition worsened, he could have cut contact.
But he had chosen a different road. He wasn't able to lie to them like that, so the only option left was running away, like he had done then.
Now when he thought about it he had only caused them to worry with his sudden disappearance.
Was it really the right choice?
He was pulled out of his thoughts again by the door opening.
This time Yui and Yuta had entered the room.
He was surprised that Yuta looked really angry while Yui had tears in her eyes again.
:::
On the rooftop Masami had found a nice place to sit and clear her head with the fresh air and the wide view.
The words Yamapi had said earlier replayed in her mind over and over again.
“If you don't trust her enough to live with two guys you should just give up. Love is also about trust! “
She as well didn't trust him enough to believe, that he wasn't cheating on her.
She saw now that Yui really had had a problem that was major and that Yamapi had been the only one to know about it.
Of course comforting her should be alright.
But Masami had misunderstood his actions and jumped to conclusions.
She should have trusted him, she realized it now.
Was Love really the feeling she had for Yamapi? Or was it just dependence?
She depended on him a lot when they were in the orphanage, since they both had lost their parents at a similar time.
They were really close and talked about their loss openly, comforted each other with the other's presence.
Did she only imagine her feelings of love for him or confused it with her strong feelings of friendship? She wasn't sure anymore.
She had always been a person who didn't like to share things.
Same goes with people.
Her feelings of jealousy could also be based on her selfish nature and not love.
Wasn't it unfair towards Yamapi to go out with him when her feelings where that unsteady?
She sighed and leaned against the railing. She was deep in thoughts, so she didn't notice someone approaching her.
“You alright?” a voice besides her said, making her jump in surprise.
When he saw that, Hiroki chuckled what in return made her pout.
“Don't sneak up on me like that!” she said exasperated, but after calming down her fast beating heart from shock, she laughed at herself.
“Ah, you're alright I see.” Hiroki said smiling brightly at her. “I was in Yamapi's room just now. He woke up and is alright. Do you want to come down?”
Masami shook her head slowly with a sad smile on her face.
“Not yet, I'll come down in a while when I've cleared my head.” she said.
Hiroki nodded slowly and went ahead of her back to Yamapi's room.
