Chapter 33

During the next week Yamapi had to drink a lot of medicine, rest well and be a good boy.
That was what the doctors and especially Erika had ordered him to do.
At the end of the week he was allowed to go outside and walk around for the first time after the incident.
Yamapi had felt much better after a few days again and wanted to walk around, but Erika's murderous glare was enough to make him lay back again.

Erika came as often as she could during her other patients to check on him and talk to him.
Ryo and Yui also had come to see him multiple times and Yuta had visited him once or twice as well, when he got off work.
But his girlfriend, Masami, hadn't come to see him at all. It worried him a lot and he had asked the others about her various times, but they avoided the topic everytime.
He also hadn't been able to contact her on the phone, which only furthered his worries.

He was wandering through the halls, thinking about her, when he heard voices from an office nearby.
At first he wanted to leave quickly, since listening in on others was quite rude, but then he heard Ryo's voice.
He didn't understood clearly what they said, so he walked closer to the door.
“You really should think about accepting it, It's serious!” the first voice said, somehow desperate.
“I already said that it's not the best time now. Don't you understand? I'm not ready yet, Sensei.” Ryo replied in a strained voice.
“Will you ever be ready?” the doctor replied calmly.
Silence followed this question and Yamapi could imagine Ryo's expression well, desperation and withheld anger.
“You can't really be prepared for a surgery with such a risk. But you know, the longer you wait, the more the risk will increase. You can collapse any moment.” the doctor continued.
Yamapi hold his breath after this. He didn't think that Ryo's condition was that critical already.
“I don't care. I don't have much faith into this surgery anyway.” Yamapi heard Ryo say, but he could tell from his voice that it wasn't the entire truth. The doctor noticed as well.
“That's not true. You haven't given up on life. Especially now, right? Don't you want the nightmare to be over quickly? You take the surgery and after it you can live like you want to, without those restrictions. Well, extreme sports should still be a problem, but you can lead a normal life.”
“Don't make it sound so easy!” Ryo said, starting to get frustrated.
“It is easy.” the doctor retorted calmly, only frustrating the patient more.

Again there was a silence. It lasted a while until he heard footsteps coming towards the door.
One moment he considered to hide, but he thought it would be better to talk with him head on in this situation.
He was already prepared to face him, when the steps stopped close to the door.
“I'll think about it and let you know.” he heard Ryo's voice which was much nearer than before.
Then the door opened and Ryo saw him standing next to it.
Yamapi wasn't looking at him, though.

“You heard?” Ryo said after looking at him for several seconds.
Yamapi nodded and turned his gaze towards him.
He wasn't sure what to say to Ryo, so he decided to stay silent and let Erika do the talking later on.
“I'll bring you back to your room, okay?” Ryo said, proving that he didn't like to talk about it either.
Yamapi smiled slightly and started walking in the direction of his room, Ryo following him closely.

“I'm going home then.” Ryo said when they reached Yamapi's door.
“Are you going to tell Erika?” he asked carefully with a hand on the door.
He thought for a while before he answered.
“No, not yet. I don't want her to worry that much”
To Ryo's surprise Yamapi's lips formed a smile.
“You know, it's almost the same line Yui said to me when I asked her if she's going to tell you two about Haruma. You two are strangely alike.”
Ryo couldn't help smiling back slightly.
“I won't lecture you about it, but what will Erika say if she finds out later on? Will she feel the same as you, when you found out about Haruma?” He paused for a while. “Well, I see you tomorrow then?”
Ryo just nodded, deep in thoughts about what he had said.

When Yamapi entered his room, he was surprised to see someone standing at the window and looking out.
He knew immediately who it was.
She used to look out of the window while thinking of her parents and he was used to the picture from the time at the orphanage.
“Masami?” he called out and his girlfriend turned around quickly.
They looked at each other for a moment and Yamapi saw some changes in her.
She was pale and looked like she didn't sleep much. Her face showed no sign of make up and her hair hang loosely around her face.
“Are you alright? Did something happen?” he asked and came towards her quickly.
He was about to cup her hand around her cheek, when she turned her face away from his touch.

“I'm alright, just couldn't sleep well today.” she said quickly to cover up her actions.
Yamapi pulled his hand away, slightly hurt.
He sat down on his bed and urged Masami to sit down on the chair beside him.
“I'm sorry...for not visiting earlier.” she apologized, without looking at him.
Immediately he knew that she had something to say, and he wouldn't like it.
“Just tell me what you want to say.” he said a little rudely.
He hated it when others kept beating around the bush.
A little taken aback by his attitude, she stayed silent for a while.
She just didn't know where to begin.

“I thought a lot over the last few days. About the things you said to Haruma. When you explained to him that the feelings he had for Yui weren't love. It bugged me, really. And when I thought more carefully about it...” she broke off, didn't know how to continue.
Yamapi sighed, he was quite sure what was coming next, but he still wanted to hear it from her personally.
“I'll just say it directly” she said and took a deep breath. “I think I confused my feelings of friendship for you with love or let's say love interest. That's why I would like to … I would like to break up.”
He avoided looking at her. Although he knew exactly what she wanted to say, he still had hoped she would surprise him, like she always did, but this time she hadn't.
Even though he knew what she wanted to say, he didn't know what to reply now.

He was upset, really upset. It's not like Masami is the love of his life, but he was happy being together with her, as a couple. And now they should just go back to being friends?
“It's not like I have a choice, right?” he said after turning to look at her.
He could see how sorry she was when she shook her head.
“I'm really sorry” she said, voicing his thoughts.
