Erika had promised she would visit him before she had to go to work.
Now that he was bored he was going to meet her at the entrance.
Since there was a lot of time left, Yamapi went outside the hospital and walked to the small park in front of it.
Then he heard the siren of an ambulance. The place he was standing at was quite near to the entrance of the emergency room, so he could see what happened easily.
When the door of the ambulance opened a doctor and his helper drove the stretcher on the street. Shortly after followed a girl with black hair. She seemed familiar to him.
“Satomi?” he breathed and thought of the girl that had worked with Ryo in the convenience store.
He looked at the stretcher more closely and saw a muffle of black hair, before the stretcher was out of his view.
“It can't be” he said to himself when he thought of Ryo and his condition.
He ran as fast as he could to the emergency station, but the stretcher was already shoved into a room he couldn't enter.
But he saw that the girl he had seen earlier was really Satomi.
Almost coughing he reached Satomi, who was pacing in front of the room they had shoved the stretcher into.
“Satomi” he said, breathing hard. “Is it...”
He couldn't speak the name out loud.
“Ryo? Yes...I met him on the street earlier. He was...was...He collapsed. I think he had an attack. A major one. Oh God.” She was nervously playing with her hands.
“Calm down. Ryo's strong. He'll be fine. He'll be fine.” Yamapi said, trying to convince her and also himself that everything will be alright.
He led Satomi to a chair and pushed her down.
“Pacing won't help anybody” he said, smiling gently but strained.
She continued wringing his hands when Yamapi sat beside her and tried to calm himself down.
He didn't want to think of what would happen if he didn't make it.
It would be like seven years ago, all over again.
But this time there wouldn't be hope. They would know that he would never return, because he wouldn't be able to.
He closed his eyes and tried to get the image from seven years ago out of his head.
They stood in front of a vacated house.
After not being able to contact their best friend for more than a week, Erika and Yamapi had gone to visit him.
But all they found was a vacated house.
Erika tried to call him again, but as always she was connected to the mailbox.
They had already left many messages for him, but it seemed like he didn't listen to them or just refused to answer.
Erika grabbed Yamapi's arm as she was about to fall.
She couldn't believe it. He was gone. Her best friend. The guy she had feelings for. Her first love.
“He isn't gone is he?” she said, trying to convince herself. “He wouldn't leave without saying something, would he? He wouldn't. Never”
Yamapi wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her to his chest when he saw she was about to cry.
He didn't say anything.
Ryo had acted weird for a long time, but when he had asked him Ryo pretended to be alright.
Erika started sobbing and Yamapi patted her back gently.
“Yamapi?” he heard Erika's voice from afar and returned to the present time.
His eyes snapped open and he saw Erika looking at them confusedly.
“What are you doing here? I thought you would be in your room.” she said to him and her gaze wandered to Satomi, an expression of dislike in her face.
She quickly looked to Yamapi again, only to see a weird expression on his face.
Her breath quickened immediately and she could foresee that it wouldn't be a happy message.
“What's wrong.” she asked with a fear strickened face.
“Ryo...collapsed” Yamapi said slowly.
Erika's eyes widened.
“He...Earlier he was fine! What happened?” Erika said, looking at Satomi pointedly.
“I don't know. I saw him when he was already having an attack.” Satomi explained, taken aback by the gaze the other woman directed at her.
“I'll go and find out what's going on” she said and walked away. The thoughts in her mind racing.
What had happened? A while ago he seemed okay to her. What happened after she left?
Was it because of her? Her fault?
She started to blame herself while she walked through one door after the other, barely realizing where she was going.
Then she was standing behind the glass window of the ICU section. There he was, lying on a bed and attached to many machines measuring his heart and other vitals.
He was unconscious, but fine for now, she could read it from his vitals.
His face was pale and his shirt soaked with sweat.
Tears started to fall from her eyes. She was still mad at him, but seeing him like that, so weak, was a shock to her.
She brushed away the tears and took out her cellphone to call Yui. Since they were really close she had a right to know what was going on.
At first Yui was shocked, but after Erika convinced her that Ryo is alright for now, she relaxed.
In about half an hour she would be there with Yuta.
A hand against the glass she watched the calm rise and fall of his chest.
She wanted to leave again to reassure Yamapi that his best friend was alright, but she didn't dare to move.
She thought he would disappear when she looked away.
Her superior came to her and saw her looking at Ryo intently.
“Someone you know?” he asked and she just nodded, without turning away from him.
“My boyfriend” she mumbled and added “Ex” in her head.
“Do you want to know the details?” he asked her and again she just nodded.
“He had an heart attack, a major one. But we managed to get him to be stable without a surgery and just with medicine.” he paused for a while and Erika knew that the bad news were to come next.
“He doesn't have long. The next attack, it doesn't matter how major it is, will kill him. The surgery his doctor is recommending to him since a long time. He should do it as quickly as possible.”
When he saw her tears falling again, he excused himself, but she called him back.
“There's really no other way? Only this surgery with a low success rate?”
He nodded gravely and added another sorry before leaving.
