As time passed, my heart bet slower and slower, gradually coming to a stop. The smell of blood was disgusting along with the unbearable piercing pain causing me to feel a bit faint.

‘My life can’t end now. It just can’t.’ I thought to myself as I lay on the floor helplessly, my hand pressuring on my stomach as blood was secreting out uncontrollably. I glanced to my side, tears rolling down my cheeks and dripping onto the tiled floor. The blood covered knife laid in front of me, the blade sharp and threatening.

Just as my life was about to end, I could hear screaming coming from behind me. I did not have the vigor to rotate my body to the other side. I noticed that the voice sounded familiar, a voice that I have always desired to hear.

“Charmaine! Charmaine!” The voice cried as it approached.

A sudden force rotated me to face the ceiling. I was embraced into the person’s arms as they continued to cry. I was unable to identify them in the position I was placed. My eye lids became heavier and heavier until it was up to a point where I could not withstand the force. My eyes closed tightly and I felt as if I was floating. The voice’s volume was decreasing quickly, fading into the atmosphere and the pain was relieving rapidly too.

I opened my eyes slowly, afraid of what I was about to see. Everything was still and was complete darkness. I was sure I had opened my eyes. I raised my hands to touch them, to confirm that they were open. My fingernail touched my wet pupil of my eye and I blinked in pain.

I was beginning to become afraid; my heart was pumping quicker and louder as I was struggling to move around since everything was jet-black. As I was attempting to move, I tripped on something solid, which caused me to fall. As I hit the ground, something sharp pierced through my stomach, causing an excruciating pain. The same smell of blood arose, causing me to scream. The screech echoed as if I was in a compressed room.

“NO!” I screamed and my eyes flung open hastily. I found myself lying on a soft comfy bed. I stared at the white ceiling, wondering what caused me to be in this position. I could feel warm hands clutching onto my hand tightly. I glanced to the side, and I noticed a figure sitting beside my bed, their head laid on the bed. I shifted my body slightly, hoping to be able to see who the person was, but the pain in my stomach caused me to halt. It was the pain that reminded me of what had happened during the most atrocious and intimidating day of my life.

***Flashback***

“Raymond, I love you!” I yelled out, while clutching onto both of his hands firmly. The cold water drops trickled down my neck, causing me to shudder slightly. The smell of sewage covered the whole alleyway. But that didn’t affect the desperate mood I was in.

“Charmaine, you have to give me time. I’m not sure how I feel about you yet.” He replied; his voice was shaky and cold.

“Please Raymond, I really love you. Please don’t leave me.” I pleaded, tears dropped from my eyes and rolled down my cheeks quickly.

“Give me time. I will call you when I have decided.” Raymond said despondently and he walked straight past me.

I was stunned; questions were circling through my mind non-stop. I felt like screaming, or at least some other option that allowed me to release my grief and misery at the moment.

I rotated my body towards the exit of the alleyway, the direction Raymond went when he had left me. I began to walk slowly, my mind kept re-playing the times when I was with Raymond, the happiness and excitement we had experienced together. When I reached the exit, something shimmering caught my eye. I glimpsed down towards the floor, where it had caught my eye, and I noticed something very familiar. I bent down towards it and I realized it was a transparent diamond dragon pendent. Through the ring that was connected with the pendent, was a glistening polished silver necklace.

After a few minutes of thinking, I finally remembered where I had seen this necklace before. A couple of years ago, I had given Ron a diamond dragon necklace for his birthday. Ron was Raymond’s best friend ever since they met in kindergarten, and they have never had any fights between them. I envied how they could keep their relationship so good after so many years. But it wasn’t until a few months ago when they had their first fight over me. Ron had thought that Raymond was ‘stealing’ me from him. But you couldn’t call it stealing, since I had never dated him in the first place. After all these years, I have always loved Raymond, but Ron never understood. Not very long ago, Ron threatened that if I ever tried to be with Raymond, he will kill me.

I never believed what he said until I got home that night I confessed with Raymond, and I found the necklace when I was leaving. I put my key into the door to unlock it, pushing the door open swiftly afterwards. The whole house was complete darkness as I entered. I ran my fingers along the wall to find the light switch. But when I thought I found it, I soon realized it was a cold and firm hand.

The lights turned on automatically, and there standing in front of me was Ron. Shock was clearly visible amongst my other mixture of emotions.

“What did I tell you about trying to be with Raymond?” He asked coldly, his eyes were wide and fuming.

I didn’t know what to say. It seemed as if a lock was placed onto my mouth, not even allowing a squeak to escape.

“Why aren’t you replying?” He asked furiously. Words still could not escape from my lips.

He began to advance towards me; his fists clenched firmly. My legs would not respond to what my mind was thinking, ‘Run towards the door, run!’

When he had gotten really close, he seized my hair and he swung me onto the couch in the next room. I had a throbbing pain in my head as I struggled to gain back my consciousness. My eyes were indistinct, from the tears that built up in my eyes, threatening to reveal itself. I heard heavy footsteps approaching me and my heart bet faster and faster. Energy was drained away from me as I lay helplessly on the couch.

‘Run Charmaine, please, run!’ I thought to myself.

“What’s the matter Charmaine? Can’t run?” Ron’s loud wicked voice rang in my ears.

I was terrified at that moment when I realized that Ron was no longer the Ron I knew previously. He has become a man who has no spirit, no mercy. Someone who can not lose, especially to his own best friend.

“Let me go.” I whispered silently, my voice was shaky. I could not see Ron’s face, but I knew he was really angry about what I had just said, because he breathing became heavier and heavier.

“I will not lose to him! If I can’t have you, no-one will.” He yelled loudly.

The last sentence repeated repetitively in my mind, wondering what he meant. ‘……If I can’t have you, no-one will’.

Suddenly, the thought hit me, I knew what he meant. He was going to kill me. He wasn’t going to let Raymond win, so he was going to kill me. I didn’t want to die yet, I wanted to see Raymond.

Something reflective shone on my eye, causing me to blink. I noticed that Ron was in front of me now. He was holding something that was shiny, but I couldn’t quite see what it was.

I think he could read my mind, because he changed angle so that I was able to distinguish what he was holding. My eyes widen and my jaw dropped slightly. My heart was pumping quicker and quicker. The light of the moon shone onto the glistening stainless steel. He pointed the long vegetable knife at me and laughed wickedly.

“I sharpened the blade before you came, just for you.” Ron said viciously.

A rush of anger came into my body, I don’t know what caused it, but I had the need to yell at him, “This is the reason why I chose Raymond instead of you. It’s because he is a lot better than you, and even if he did lose, he wouldn’t go killing people, unlike you!”

His bloodshot eyes were filled with anger as they glared at me. It was silent for a very long time, and just when I thought everything has calmed down, a sharp blade penetrated my stomach, and the pain was unbearable. The smell of blood began to cover the room’s atmosphere as I dropped to the ground clutching onto the knife which still remained in my stomach. He had swiftly moved towards me when I was not paying attention, and pierced the knife through my stomach.

***End Flashback***

“Raymond?” I asked as I looked closely at the person who was resting their head on my bed.

Raymond raised his head and glanced at me with fatigue eyes. “Charmaine!” he said when he noticed that I was awake.

“Why am I here? I thought I was dead?” I asked, wondering if it was a dream.

“The knife pierced you stomach, but about one centimeter from you heart. So you were able to survive.” Raymond explained. “Besides, I wouldn’t let you die, even if it penetrated your heart anyway.”

I gazed at him happily, I had always dreamt of him being by my side, to support me. “Thanks Ray.”

He face became serious, and he clutched onto both of my hands, “I’m sorry Charmaine.”

I was confused, “Why are you sorry? You didn’t do anything.” I responded.

“It was only when I found you lying on the floor, that I realized how much I loved you. Please give me one more chance. I will take care of you forever.” He said; his eyes wide and pleading.

I nodded quickly; tears came rushing down my cheeks, the happiness rushed in my mind, “Of course! I love you Ray!”

He embraced me tightly, the tears dripped onto his T-shirt, which caused it to become wet. An image of Ron visualized in my mind.

“What……. About Ron?” I asked, scared when I mentioned the name.

There was complete silence coming from Raymond. I pushed him from the embrace softly, so that I could see his face. His expression was heartbreaking; he didn’t give me any eye contact when he began to speak.

“Ron……… is dead.” His whispered sorrowfully.

I don’t know why I still sympathized him, but I felt a rush of sadness going through my mind when I heard what Raymond said.

“How……. Did…. It happen?” I asked, my voice becoming shaky as I continued the sentence, because I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to know what had happened.

“The police suspect that it was because that he could not withstand the emotions that he felt when he ‘killed’ you. So he too, stabbed himself with a knife when he had gotten back to his house. But he wasn’t as lucky. The knife punctured his heart, causing to bleed too much. So he died mostly from blood loss.” Raymond explained.

Tears began rolling down my cheeks continuously again. I thought I hated him, for all he done to me. But the memories when he was still my good friend, re-played in my mind, so that I had no chance to hate him. Raymond pulled my closer to him so that my cheek was resting on his chest.

“Don’t worry, I’m still here.” He whispered silently.

I nodded as I continued to cry. I really loved Raymond, but I also wanted my good friend back. I wanted everything to return to when we were all children, so we had no problems or any pressure. But for my whole life, I’ve only loved Raymond, and he has only loved me.
