Chapter 2

Never, No Way, Hell No: Damnit

Changmin yawned awake the next morning and he heard the old man banging on his door.

“Yah! Get up you, brat! Get up! The shop’s opening now and we need you in the kitchen! Ppalli!”

He groaned and rolled out of bed. Despite those two giving him a place to stay, he couldn’t help but notice they didn’t really like him. He was here because he as young and cute: women attractions.

‘Oh well… it could be worse.’

He grinned pulling on his uniform , brushing his hair back into a ponytail and heading into the kitchen. The shop in question was a coffee shop that served lunch as well and he was in charge of making the coffee and serving.

The shop’s sign was switched over just as he was warming up the roasting machine. He rotated his shoulder and nearly died of shock when a squeal echoed through the open shop.

“Oh my god! It’s Superman!”

He looked over, the Han Soo Ok and her husband Han Gong Ba looked between him and the girl who was busy calling up people and screaming into the phone.

“It’s Superman!”

Soo Ok waddled over to him.

“Superman?” She asked.

“It’s a long story…”

The shop was soon filled with excited screaming and orders.

Waffles were served and made and the coffee kept pouring. Gong Ba grinned up at him.

“I’d never seen so many people in this shop, we’re making so much money. I guess we’ll have to keep you around after all Superman!”

He grimaced and ran around the room serving people. After the morning rush on a school holiday and the shop quieted to a low roar, Changmin finally took a brief break leaning against the counter while the machine still roasted the beans.

The bell above the door rang once more and he looked up.

“Welcome to-“

“Are you Shim Changmin?” The man in black asked.

He blinked and nodded, “ Wae yo?”

“ Our boss has something important to discuss with you, will you be here tonight?”

“Y-Yes…”

“Good.” He walked out without another word.

“Did you borrow money from loan sharks you punk?” Soon Ok asked hitting him.

“Aniyo! Stop hitting me!” He said pouting and disappearing into the kitchen to make sandwiches for the lunch rush.

He made a thousand and ate about twenty in the process. He always at the leftovers anyway so it didn’t matter.

The day passed slowly, god how he hated Saturdays. If he wasn’t up all day in the shop, he would be up all night hunting. Sometimes he wished that he wasn’t the one they found… Sometimes they would have just stayed hidden forever.

‘Hyung... what am I going to do?’

“Ah, I finally get to meet SuperMan…” He looked up at the voice.

A man, early forties maybe, black hair and expensive suit followed by three other men with silver briefcases. HE frowned as he took a seat across from him.

“Are you parents here?” He asked.

“My parents are dead.” He answered with a straight face.

“And these two?” He asked motioning to Soon Ok and Gong Ba, “ Your legal guardians?”

“I’m my own guardian if that’s what you’re asking. They own this shop and have given me a chance to earn my keep. What is it that you want from me?”

The man smiled, “ Please accept my condolences.”

He blinked as the three behind him came up setting their briefcases down and opened them revealing a pressed uniform to the school he’d been to only once in his life.

“President Jung offers you a special opportunity to attend Yeoksa High School, the school of Jung. Ban. Hap.” He said grandly.

Changmin said nothing and watched the sales pitch with an even face.

“We understand that you are quite the star when it comes to academics and athletics… I’m sure you know the importance of good training grounds…We have an extensive list of training specialists and fields for any type of sport you could imagine and access to the best technology in Korea.”

Soon Ok almost burst out of her skin, “ He’ll accept!”

Changmin glanced at them who were dancing around happily.

“Last time I checked , you’re not my guardians.” Changmin said and stopped them.

“After all we’ve done for you?!” Gong Ba started and hit him over the head, “ If you don’t accept we’ll throw you out into the streets!”

“Fine go ahead, we’ll see how well your shop does without the help.” Changmin said and stood, “ I’m sorry but I can’t go to a school that allows for the entire school population to gang up on one defenseless girl and drive her to ending her life.”

“You are referring to the D4’s activities… yes well… There is not much we can do about that.”

“My point exactly-“

“But… that had nothing to do with you.”

“It doesn’t, hm? I carried that girl to the hospital remember, which is the only reason you’re here in the first place. Admit it, control the media by sending the one who started all to the school right?”

He grimaced and smirked at the boy’s intelligence. He was no ordinary commoner , just then his phone rang.

“Yobaseyo?” He asked urgently.

No one ever called him before ten. Why would they call him now? There was a silence and he knew what this would be about.

“Never. No Way. Hell No-“

“You’ll go.”

“Ny-“

The dark voice hung up on the other side and he gritted his teeth.

“Damnit. Fine! I’ll go! But this isn’t for any of you…” He sneered at Soon Ok and Gong Ba, gripping his non working phone.

‘I can’t believe this… since when did angels start watching over my academic life?’

“I am glad to hear that. I’ll expect you bright and early, here’s your schedule and if you are in need of anything…please don’t hesitate to call.” He placed a card on top of the clothes and other paraphernalia sitting on the table and he glowered at the prim uniform as Soon Ok and Gong Ba fawned over it.

“What have I gotten myself into?”

“You’d better behave! And make sure to tell everyone about our shop, you got it?” Soon OK said admiring the expensive material of the uniform.

He sighed and thought he was going to puke picking up the brochure and flipping through it.

‘The archery range is beautiful… I guess I can’t complain…’

He sighed and carried the things to his room and flopped onto his bed. Hours passed and passed and just as he got dressed to go out his phone lit up again.

“Four tonight. Find them.”

He sighed at the direct order and glared at the phone as he picked up the sapphire red talisman and headed out flying into the skies and let his sense take over.

‘Four? Tch, it’s the weekend and I still don’t get a break…’

He glared at the sky and higher with his glowing eyes as he set down and prepped the talisman in his hand for transformation.

He sat alone waiting for the three that had been following him. The fourth one was still a mile or two off.

“Ottoke? Why tonight of all nights?”

Rogues had no respect for other’s off time. The talisman glowed in his hand stretching into a bow off the darkest silver. The invisible energy band stabilized and he placed his fingers to it drawing it back with three fingers for three arrows and lay back against the tree.

‘Come on you bastards…’

The inhuman roar and the sound of agony cut through the night as the three oncoming beasts were pinned to the tree with solidifying black arrows. Drawing out the venom of a the Rogue and storing it into the arrow until the human being inside became clear.

‘Nice shot.’

The roar behind him shocked him into spinning away and dropping the talisman.

‘Not tonight…’ He groaned at the beast ran at him, snarling and he blocked the first swing of the claw.

A slimy thing wrapped around his waist and tossed him into the air.

‘I hate older ones!’

He held out his hand to summon the black knife he only used in emergencies and was spinning, diving down to hit it the only spot that would stun it.

“Give it back!” He screamed striking beast in a perfect glowing silver black cross over the face sending it crashing to the ground.

The cross was solidifying faster than expected and he shoved it deeper into the struggling beasts face to purify it.

He sighed as the beast reverted back into a young girl no older than five years old.

“Poor thing… Oppa’s sorry…” He whispered and picked her up into his arms and setting her on a bench to sleep as he picked up his talisman, restored his knife to heaven and went to purify the other three.

An old man, a teenage girl, and a middle aged woman, he gritted his teeth levitating the woman and old man, transporting them across the city to their homes where their families were waiting.

He picked up the little girl and the teenager to return them, setting the teenager on the porch, ringing the bell and off to find the young girl’s home.

He reached the ground and walked and he didn’t realize she was waking up.

“Appa~…” She whispered, shifting in his arms.

‘Shit.’

He reverted his eyes and looked her in the eyes as she woke up.

“Are you okay?” He asked gently.

“Who… are you?”

“That’s not important… but can you tell me where you live?”

She shook her head innocently, “ Oppa~… I want Appa…”

He smiled and ruffled her hair and kept walking realizing it was impossibly hard to find this girl’s house. She must have just moved into the area, and her being a child might have had something to do with it.

“What does your appa do for a living?” He asked as he kept walking with her in his arms.

“He’s a detective…”

‘Oh that’s why… okay.’

“Let’s see if Appa’s at the police department huh?”

She nodded happily and he took a turn to get them to the police department. He climbed the stairs and walked into the office.

“What’s your name, hm?”

“I’m-“

“Minni!” She looked up as an older man snatched her from his arms and held her closely.

The man’s energy was similar to the girl’s. He smiled.

“Who are you? Minni are you okay? What happened? Did he hurt you?”

He smiled.

“Appa, oppa found me and brought me here.”

The man kept checking his little girl and looked at Changmin up and down. Wearing all black he looked like a robber but with an innocent baby face he couldn’t have been anything.

“Aren’t you a little young to be out this late?” He asked.

Changmin smiled, “ I work at night. I found her in the nearby park. I’ll be leaving now.”

He bowed slightly.

“Wait…”

He stopped and turned looking at the man.

“You look familiar kid… what’s your name?”

He smiled, “ I think the news called me Superman… but I go by Changmin. It was nice meeting you. Take care okay?”

“Bye oppa!” She waved him goodbye as he left out the door.

“So that’s Superman huh?” He said softly and smirked carrying his little girl back to his office and sitting her down on the couch.

Sometimes, he guessed, it was nice to have vigilantes if they were always bringing back your kids.

Changmin arrived back to his room, rolled his shoulders and fell into bed. He had to get up in about six hours to go to a school on the orders of angels. He smiled at the thought of the little girl and her father.

He guessed being a Hunter wasn’t that bad…maybe.

‘Maybe I am sort of like Super Man… but Korean.’

He laughed at the thought. Superman? The last time he remembered Super Man had laser vision and skin strong than steel… All he had was a couple of magic weapons and half-bred blood.

‘Gonna have to stick with Hunter, Hancock would be closer…without the alcohol and all.’

He was the only one of his kind left since his brother left to another world…. Okay so he died but that was it.

His phone lit up and the Angel Ga Mi appeared before him.

“Ah Ga Mi, my favorite… what is it this time?” He asked surly.

“The council has a few conditions for you… You did complete your mission I take it?”

“I thought you could see all…”

She pouted at him, “This isn’t funny… No fitting, no activating, you are to be just as your human side is: normal.”

“Oh that’s different… I am to be just Changmin huh?”

“Yes, there are things at work that you cannot comprehend. Keep your talisman with you at all times and be prepared. But you cannot use your powers against mortals no matter what happens…”

“My powers? Against mortals? Fine whatever… if something comes up I’ll just kick ass on my own.”

“As you wish.” The light faded and he groaned falling back into bed.

Great… for once in his entire life he’d been asked to control himself. Joy.

If you guessed Changmin, you were right! Yay!

Responding to mel: it takes me forever to come up with a title after I've started writing the story. My titles usually have something to do with the story and plays an important part of it... And the title is an English translation of Jung.Ban.Hap. In case anyone caught that.
