Chapter 9

Truce

Light and cool…

Changmin opened his eyes to a strange room he’d never seen before. It was far too elegant… far too… beautiful.

‘Am I dead?’

“Changmin you’re awake!” He rolled his eyes to the open entrance as Jaejoong walked in and sat on the bed checking his temperature.

“Your fever’s finally gone… we thought you were going to cook to death. How do you feel?”

Changmin groaned finding that his mouth was too dry to speak.

“Omo… you’re thirsty?” Jaejoong asked offering him a glass of water and helping him to sit down.

Changmin gulped down cup after cup until the whole gallon was gone and he sighed with content. His mouth was working again. He looked over himself seeing the bandages and moved to pull them off.

“Wh-What are you…” Jaejoong’s panic faded away as the bloody bandages gave way to unmarred tan skin.

“You’re… healed but…”

Changmin didn’t respond removing the sticky bandages from his skin and rolling out of bed, stumbling to his feet.

“I really don’t think you should be out of bed… you just recovered from a major fever…”

“Bathroom.” Changmin said turning to look at him. Jaejoong pointed in the bathroom’s direction and Changmin stalked down the hall.

‘Omo… something seems… off about him…’

He heard the shower running and informed the servants that he was awake and hungry… really hungry…

Yunho walked past the room towards the dining room where food was being served. And took a seat at the table. Jaejoong provided the stoic Changmin with clothing and guided him down the stairs.

“I had the cooks make extra food since you would be joining us…” Changmin took a seat with dead eyes not even bothering to acknowledge Yunho’s presence.

“Y-yah… why are you here?”

“Yunho, “ Jaejoong warned softly pouring himself a cup of coffee, “ Changmin will be our guest until we can find a place for him to stay.”

Changmin’s head shot up from his empty plate and cup to look at Jaejoong. HE expected to be leaving within the hour, not staying there.

“No buts Changmin, what type of hyung would I be if I didn’t take care of you in your time of need. No arguments eat as much as you like.”

Changmin reached across the table for the pitcher of orange juice and poured himself a glass while the servants brought out more food. His stomach growled having not eaten for almost 24 hours…

His metabolism was not happy with him.

Changmin looked up at Jaejoong’s warm smile.

“Eat, you’re welcome here…”

Changmin bit his lip and Yunho watched the nervous habit with fascination and his eyes widened when Changmin began to reach for food. The room was silent until Changmin took the first bite and his eyes widened.

“Is it good?” Jaejoong asked.

Changmin nodded and kept eating. Yunho tilted his head, the servants gawked and Jaejoong thought he was going to die laughing.

‘Jae wasn’t kidding… he eats more than I ever could….’

He couldn’t count how many bowls of rice the other had but realized that when Changmin was finished there would be no leftovers like there usually were.

“Hungry were you?”

Changmin looked down, “ Sorry…”

“I’m just teasing Changmin, did you eat enough?”

Changmin nodded, his stomach was happy at the moment.

“Oh, before I forget… You two need to draw a truce.”

“What?” Yunho asked.

“While he’s our guest, he’s family Yunho. Don’t make me smack you.”

Yunho pouted at the threat as Changmin reached his hand over the table.

“Truce.”

Yunho nodded shaking his head and trying to ignore the electric current that shot up his spine.

‘Definitely not static electricity…’

“Yay! Come on Changmin I’ll show you around. While you’re here this is your home, arasseo… omo we’ll have to get you some more clothing and a new uniform…” Jaejoong said pulling him up from his chair and through the house.

“Oh and you need a nickname, your name’s so long and you’re my dongsaeng… so… Min. Min is your nickname okay?”

Changmin nodded realizing he didn’t have much choice… Kang Ho called him Min.

“Are you sure you’re feeling alright? You haven’t said much…”

Changmin didn’t respond to that… He was still resetting as it were.

There was a game room, a painting studio, and a bunch of other things the main thing that caught his attention was the outdoor archery range and the music room.

His mood lightened and fell when he realized that he didn’t have his bow… His brother’s bow was gone…

Changmin bit his lip and headed back to his room to mope a bit longer.

“Changmin…”

He ignored Yunho’s call and closed the door behind him, crawling into the four poster bed and pulling the warm blankets over himself. He just didn’t want to be there anymore.

He closed his eyes and was faced with a pure white field… his brother was lying next to him.

Hyung… I’m sorry…

Waeyo? You haven’t done anything wrong…except scare the hell out of me.

Your bow… they took it.

My bow?

Yes.

Min, what are you talking about…?

What do you mean-

He was awakened by a presence in the room with him and he sat up catching the hand reaching for him in a steel grip.

“Will you calm down?” Yunho said through the dim light of his room.

“What are you.. Why are you…”

Yunho turned on the bedside light.

“It’s time for dinner and…”

Changmin looked down at Yunho’s other hand holding the strap of a familiar black case.

“I believe this belongs to you….one of Yoochun’s guys found it on the out skirts of town in some old abandoned house…”

Changmin’s hand shook reaching for the pristine black case and setting it in his lap. He unzipped it and gasped. It was there… the arrows too. It was there… perfectly there, Sinner side up and he was gasping for breath.

“We don’t know who attacked you, but I apologize in their stead… Someone was taking a prank too far.”

Changmin felt the tears falling as he traced the artful patterns on his brother bow and clutched the case closer to his chest feeling his soul rest back into peace…

“Truce?”

Changmin nodded into the canvas fabric of the case and sighed at the overwhelming sense of peace. It was alright now… it was alright now.

Yunho watched the strong boy cling to the case for a moment later before rezipping the bag and following him down for dinner.

He knew there was something he wanted to ask at what made the bow so special… that It calmed him and it’s absence sent him into a rage… he wanted to know but didn’t ask fearing it was too sensitive.

Having slept through lunch, Changmin nearly ate the table and grinned at Jaejoong who was making plans to take him shopping for clothing.

He was kind of glad that he didn’t have the phone anymore…. How were they going to contact him without making it seem like he was crazy?

‘Doesn’t matter, I’m sure they’ll find a way.’

He kept eating happily and climbed into the hot shower happily. It was great to have constantly hot water…

He groaned at the comfort and stepped out of the shower combing his fingers through his wet and wavy hair twisting hit over his shoulder and staring into the mirror as a message appeared in the condensed steam.

Seven in the Forest.

He pouted at the mirror. Seven? He was recovering from acute shock and they expected him to face seven rogues that night?

He groaned again wiping the message and taking his sweet time getting dressed and grabbing his talisman. He opened the balcony doors and flew up, invisible to the normal eye before soaring through the sky searching for the seven beasts and deciding to keep to higher ground.

One: ash

Two: human girl

Three: fire

Four: water

Five: human boy

Six: shadow

Seven: light.

He touched down to retrieve the girl and boy to take them home and get back to the mansion for some much needed practice.

He couldn’t sleep and found himself outside on the archery range and sighed at the beauty of it.

The full moon over head lighted the path in an ethereal way and reflected off the target twenty, fourty, and a hundred meters back.

He unzipped his bag and pulled out his bow, taking his stance and breathing in the calming wind that brushed through the range.

“Can’t sleep?”

He turned around to see Jaejoong behind him with a bow and a quiver on his hip.

“Yeah… shooting helps to calm me.” Changmin replied as Jaejoong came online with him.

“So… how good are you with a bow?” Jaejoong asked, “ It was the one thing I never got around to asking…”

“Got a pair of binoculars?”

Jaejoong nodded retrieving a pair from the range table.

“I’m going to shoot for the farthest one.” Changmin said.

Jaejoong held up the binoculars and watched the arrow land dead center in the farthest target.

“Wah~… what are you an assassin?”

Changmin chuckled, “ Well I won first place in Korea when I competed… I was supposed to go to the Olympics but I turned it down…”

“Ok…” Jaejoong said.

“Let me see you shoot…” Changmin started.

“Why so I can embarrass myself?”

“Aniyo… I want to know what type of person you are…”

Changmin stepped back as Jaejoong looked at him curiously.

“I can read people better when they shoot…”

“Okay… well don’t be surprised if I miss… I usually do…”

Changmin smiled and Jaejoong set his stance. Weight balanced, knees stiff, elbows high, eyes fierce. He fired and the arrow took a wavy path to the ten meter target and grazed just over top of it.

“Fail…”

“You’re… angry.”

“What?”

“You hate your stepmother… because she drove your mother insane…”

Jaejoong’s eyes widened.

“How did you…”

“Your father’s ill… and you’re trying to get Yunho on your side to overrule your stepmother’s persuasion about his will and company…”

“Changmin you…”

Changmin’s eyes roamed Jaejoong a bit more and he continued, “ You’re in love… with Ji Hoon…”

Jaejoong flushed.

“You’re lonely and you’re angry… but you… you’re a very caring person… You love Yunho even though you’re only half brothers and you seem to think of me as your adopted baby.”

Jaejoong’s eyes widened, was he reading his mind? He’d only though of Changmin as a little baby he was caring for once…

“How do you know all of this? Did you do a background check on me or something?”

“No… I watched you shoot. Want me to tell you a secret?”

“Mwot?”

“Ji Hoon’s going to ask you to marry him….soon.”

His eyes widened and flushed.

“Okay… let’s not freak me out anymore baby Min- oops…”

Changmin smiled, “ It’s alright. I’ve gotten it a lot.”

Jaejoong smiled and grinned, “ Okay Baby Min…”

They walked down the course to grab their arrows and returned to the house together.

“Were you serious that you can read me… when I shoot?”

“I was right wasn’t I?”

Jaejoong nodded. He was scarily accurate.

“So what do you think?”

“I think you could make a living as a psychic.”

Changmin tossed his head back and laughed. He bid Jaejoong goodnight and crawled into the four poster bed setting his bow against the dresser.

He guessed a truce wouldn’t be so bad…
