Chapter 1

Nightmare

It was a cold night in Hong Kong. Leila shivered as she walked down the street, zipping up her hoodie and wrapping her arms around herself. Suddenly she heard a twig crack and the tell-tale shuffle of shoes on pavement. Leila swirled around, but only saw an empty street. She began to walk faster.

"Gotta get home in one piece. Gotta get home in one piece," Leila kept repeating in her mind as she broke into a run, her sneakers hitting the pavement at a steady rhythm.

Suddenly, she saw a shadow loom over her. Leila's heart quickened and the hair on the back of her neck stood on end as she kept running.

"Wait, why am I running? I'm tough. I grew up in the mob. I can take whatever's behind me," Leila muttered. She swung around, raising her fists in a fighter's stance. That's when she saw her brother.

"Bro?" Leila's eyes widened in surprise. She relaxed when she saw her brother, Raymond. But for some reason, he was looking cold and distant.

"You're not my sister. My sister wouldn't betray me," Raymond said without any emotion.

"Wha..." Leila started in confusion, but before she knew it, Raymond's fist was shooting towards her face.

"Aaaaahhh!" Leila started screaming, grimacing for the pain of Raymond's fist. But it never came.

Suddenly, she opened her eyes and sat straight up.

"What in the world...Oh jeez...the sun," she sputtered, covering her eyes from the sharp rays of the morning sun that was peeking through her window.

"Had a nightmare?" Leila heard a voice coming from her bedroom doorway. She turned her head and found her brother leaning against the doorframe, grinning at her.

"Yeah," Leila sighed, not bothering to tell the person closest to her that she'd been having this same dream for a couple weeks now and that it was about him. She can't figure out why she's been having these dreams. On some nights, she doesn't even want to fall asleep for fear of having the nightmare again.

"You want to talk about it?" Raymond asked, entering the room and sitting on the edge of Leila's bed.

"No. It's bad enough to have the nightmare. I don't want to traumatize myself all over again," Leila said, getting out of bed. "But thanks for your concern, Ray. I guess it's because you almost got busted a couple weeks ago when the cops found out about your little meeting."

"I told you. Never worry about me. You need to concentrate on your studies. I want you to have a better future than this," Raymond said in a serious tone. "You have to promise me that you will never get into this business."

"Ok, I promise. But Ray, why did you get into this mob business if you're so deadset against me joining?" Leila asked while washing her face and brushing her teeth in the small bathroom adjoining her room.

"After our parents died, Uncle took us in. At that time, I was still to young to know what he did for a living, but as I was growing up, I realized he was training both of us to take over his organization one day," Raymond explained grimly. "I had no choice. You know I'm not as good in school as you are. This is the only business I know how to do. Besides, Uncle was good to us and I guess this is my way of showing my gratitude. But you can still get out."

"Yeah, I remember. He used to make me train in hand-to-hand combat. Ah, good times!" Leila joked. "But seriously, I really miss him and our parents, even though I don't remember them." Leila heaved a heavy sigh and looked at her brother. "At least I have you. That's all I need."

"Yeah, that's right, you little punk, and don't you forget it," Raymond said lightheartedly with a grin as he started wrestling with Leila. "Oh and remember that you have combat training today. And don't let me hear that you missed it."

"Aw man," Leila groaned. "Alright, but since it's Saturday, I'm going shopping first. See you later, bro."
