Chapter 19

Murder?

“Ugh. I can’t believe how that slut is all over Ron,” Nancy spat out in disgust as she toss her cigarette on the floor and stepped on it. She was at the smoking area at the side of the police building, watching Ron say goodbye to Leila.

“You know, you should do something about it,” a girl beside Nancy remarked.

“You bet I will, Charmaine. When I’m through with her, she’s going to wish she never stole Ron from me,” Nancy smiled malevolently.

Later that day,

“Leila, table 2 needs to be served,” Jessica instructed.

“Got it,” Leila acknowledged that she was going. She went over to a table near the entrance. The café was pretty empty at this time of day and Leila was relaxing while finishing her art homework. As she got closer, she saw that the customer was a pretty girl reading a magazine. She looked familiar. Where have I seen her before? Leila thought as she stopped by the table. The pretty girl looked up.

“Leila! It’s good to see you,” the girl said sweetly, almost too sweetly.

“Do I know you?” Leila was confused. How does she know my name?

“It’s Nancy, remember? I work with Ronnie at the police station,” Nancy put on a fake smile.

Ronnie? Leila tried to hide her nausea. Then she remembered two months ago when Ron introduced his friends right here at the Moonlight Café. “Oh, right, Nancy. I’m really sorry. It’s just that I serve so many customers I can’t remember every person.”

“It’s okay,” Nancy said. She cracked her knuckles.

“So, what can I get you?” Leila asked, pulling out a small notepad out of her navy apron.

“I’ll have a large coffee. Black,” Nancy responded.

“I’ll be right back,” Leila walked away to get her drink. As Nancy watch Leila walked away, she narrowed her eyes at Leila’s back and her lips curled into a sneer.

When Leila returned with a large mug of coffee, she set it down on the table. “Here you go, Nancy. Enjoy.”

“Wait, Leila. Why don’t you join me for a while?” Nancy asked coolly. Leila was surprised. No customer has ever asked her to sit down with them. Well, maybe except for some guys trying to hit on her. She looked around, not sure of what to do.

“C’mon, Leila. There are not a lot of customers and they’ve all been served,” Nancy said. “I want to get to know the girl who stole Ron’s heart.”

Leila decided to sit down. She figured it wouldn’t hurt and besides, it would be rude not to talk to one of Ron’s friends. She noticed Nancy still hasn’t touched the coffee. “Aren’t you going to drink your coffee?”

“Oh. It’s still too hot,” Nancy replied. “So, how did a girl like you meet Ron?”

Leila hesitated. Something about Nancy’s tone and attitude didn’t sit well with her. It was like she was trying to hide her hatred. “Um…well, I was being mugged and Ron came to my rescue.”

“Oh…I see,” Nancy said casually. “Damsel in distress, huh?”

“I guess,” Leila was getting uncomfortable. She stood up and smiled at Nancy. “Well, enjoy your coffee. I have to go wipe some tables.”

Nancy displayed another fake smile. “I will.”

As Leila walked away, she couldn’t help but feel that Nancy didn’t like her that much. I wonder why? She thought as she took a cloth and began wiping the tables.

------------------------------------------------------------

“Tavia, come here and look. Did I overcook the chicken?” Leila asked worriedly as she looked into the pan.

Tavia closed the refrigerator doors and went over to Leila, who was standing by the stove. She took a look at Leila’s lemon chicken.

“It looks good and smells even better,” Tavia assured, smiling at Leila. “Don’t be so worried. Ron is so in love with you that he probably wouldn’t care if he’s eating burnt chicken. He’s going to be too busy staring into your eyes.”

“Shut up, Tavia,” Leila said, her cheeks turning a light shade of red.

It’s been two days since Leila had that weird conversation with Nancy. Today, Ron was coming over for dinner and Leila was scared. She rarely cooks since her brother made all the meals. Tavia had volunteered to cook the entire dinner, but Leila didn’t want Ron to think she can’t cook.

“Okay, now I think you’re burning the chicken,” Tavia’s voice broke through Leila’s daydreams.

“Oh, crap,” Leila shut off the fire and stared grimly at her chicken.

“Let’s just say it’s very well-done,” Tavia joked. The doorbell rang right after she said that. “Oh, that must be Ron. Go ahead, I’ll clean up here.”

Leila smiled gratefully at Tavia and went to open the door. Ron looked even more handsome, wearing a suit and tie and holding a plastic container. He smiled at Leila.

“You know, it’s supposed to be a casual dinner,” Leila said lightly.

“Well, I didn’t get the memo,” Ron grinned. He leaned in and kissed Leila. Tavia had finished cleaning up and was watching the both of them from the kitchen. She looked away when she saw them kiss. She thought about Raymond and wondered what he was doing. She snapped out of it and walked into the living room.

“So, Ron. I guess you don’t have much faith in Leila’s cooking because it looks like you brought extra food,” Tavia said, pointing at the container in Ron’s hand.

“Hi, Tavia. No, it’s nothing like that. This is dessert,” Ron defended as he set the container on the table.

“Yeah, sure, whatever,” Tavia said jokingly.

“C’mon, Ron. I made some chicken, really well-done,” Leila said, taking Ron’s hand and winking at Tavia. She pulled him to a seat. “I’m going to get the food.”

Leila went into the kitchen, leaving Ron and Tavia alone. She took a seat across from him. “Hey, what did you bring for dessert?”

“I hope you like chocolate because I brought chocolate fudge cake,” Ron said proudly. “I made it myself.”

“Hey Leila, can we eat dessert first?” Tavia asked as Leila came out with her food. “He brought chocolate fudge cake.”

Leila set down her food on the table. “Nope, you gotta be able to get through my chicken before you can eat his cake.”

“Aww…,” Tavia said in disappointment.

Ron laughed. “C’mon, let’s eat. I haven’t eaten anything since I got off of work. I can’t wait to taste your food, Leila.”

“Believe me, you can,” Leila said, making a face as she sat down. They were about to dig in when the doorbell rang. Leila looked at Tavia in confusion.

"Did you invite anyone else?" Leila asked Tavia.

“Nope. I wonder who that is?” Tavia replied as she got up from the table and went to open the door. When she opened the door, the three of them saw two detectives, looking deadly serious.

“Your friends, Ron?” Tavia asked without taking her eyes off the two detectives. One of them was male and the other female.

“Bosco! Charmaine! How did you know I was here? Is everything okay?” Ron was just as surprised at seeing them. He got up and began walking towards them.

“Ron, you’re here,” Bosco said without any emotion. “But we’re not here to see you. We’re here to arrest Miss Tong.”

Leila spat out a piece of chicken. She looked at the two cops like they were crazy. “What?”

“Yeah. What’s going on?” Ron asked, very confused. “Is this some kind of joke?”

“No joke, Ron. We found her prints on a knife used to kill a young man. We’re bringing her in for questioning,” Charmaine responded.

Ron, Leila, and Tavia couldn’t believe what they were hearing. Ron stepped in front of Leila. “There must be a mistake. Leila didn’t kill anyone.”

“Evidence doesn’t lie, Ron. Shouldn’t you know that?” Charmaine said coldly. “We have to arrest her.”

She headed for Leila, who was standing closely behind Ron, looking scared and confused.

“Don’t come any closer, Charmaine,” Ron warned. He continued to shield Leila. Tavia suddenly got very angry.

“No one, not even the cops, can just barge in here, into my home, and start talking nonsense. Please leave,” Tavia pointed to the doorway.

Leila, who had remained silent this whole time, spoke up. “I didn’t kill anyone. If bringing me in can help you see that, then fine, I’ll go.”

Ron turned around. “You don’t have to go anywhere. They’re obviously making a mistake.”

“I know, but you know they’re not going to leave unless I go with them,” Leila said, looking into Ron’s eyes. “I’ll be fine. Please leave some cake for me, okay? I’ll be right back.”

She started to walk towards the two cops.

“I’m coming with you,” Ron said.

“So am I,” Tavia agreed.

“Fine, but you’re going to have to find another way to get to the police station because we can’t have you in the car,” Bosco said, looking from Ron to Tavia.

“We’ll take my car,” Ron said to Tavia. She nodded.

Still confused, they followed the two cops and Leila out the door.
