Chapter 2

Thief!

The rays of the sun beamed down on the streets of Hong Kong.

“Jeez, must be another heat wave,” Leila thought as she window-shopped.

Suddenly, Leila felt someone yanked her purse away. She caught a glimpse of the thief before he started running down the street.

“HEY!” She screamed.

Meanwhile, a young man heard Leila’s shout and saw someone running away. He broke into a run, hurrying to chase down the thief. “Hey, I’m a cop. I’m trained to do this,” he thought.

All of a sudden, he stopped and gaped in amazement.

Leila had started running as soon as she realized that she’s been mugged. Her legs were a blur as she pumped them furiously. She closed the gap between herself and the thief and launched herself at him, tackling him and causing him to fall and drop the purse. He was shocked that his victim actually got him. He laid there dazed as Leila picked up her purse and with a deadly glare, walked away.
While all this was happening, the young man who witnessed the event ran up to Leila and asked: “Are you alright?”

Leila recognized him as the one who tried to help her.

“Yeah, thanks,” she said gratefully.

“For what?” The young man asked.

“You tried to help me, which a lot of people wouldn’t do. They just want to avoid the entire situation,” Leila explained. “By the way, my name’s Leila.” She extended her hand.

“Ron Ng,” the young man said, shaking her hand. “That was amazing.”

“What, taking care of myself? Not letting anyone take advantage of me? Yeah, I think that that’s pretty amazing,” Leila said with a slight smirk.

“No, I mean…,” Ron gulped, his face turning red. “Eh, it’s just…” He didn’t know how to continue.

“You’ve never seen a girl chase down her mugger,” Leila finished for him. “Yeah, you gotta admit, that is rare.” She grinned at Ron, who was admiring her innocent beauty and underlying strength.

“Hey, I’m thirsty after chasing down a thief,” Leila said. “I’m going to Starbucks for a frappacino. Would you like to come along?”

“Yeah sure,” Ron said, happy at the prospect that he could spend more time with her.

“So, what do you do for a living, anyway?” Leila asked as they began walking.

“I’m a cop,” Ron said. “What do you do?”

“I have a part time job as a waitress at a coffee shop and I go to school the rest of the time,” Leila answered. “You like being a cop?”

“Well, I’m a third generation cop and besides, it puts food on the table,” Ron said. “But you know, sometimes I get so tired of catching criminals and then see them back on the street only to commit the same crime again.”

“Yeah, sometimes the justice system sucks,” Leila said, as she ordered a mocha frappacino. “Would you like anything?”
“An iced coffee please,” Ron replied. “Here, let me pay for you, since I couldn’t help you get the mugger.”

“Wow thanks,” Leila said gratefully. “Wow, what a gentleman,” she thought as she looked at Ron.
Ron caught Leila staring at him and smiled at her. Leila looked away, embarrassed.

“He's kinda cute, but there’s no way I could fall for him. I mean he’s a cop. I cannot fall for a cop. But wait, it’s only been a couple minutes since I met this guy. There’s no way I could like a guy that fast. The furthest we can go is good friends. Yeah, good friends. I need more of those.” All these thoughts raced through Leila’s mind as she got her drink and sat down on the table. Ron followed her with his own drink.

“So what are you studying in school?” Ron asked, sipping the iced coffee.

“Interior design,” Leila replied, trying to mix the cream with her straw. “I’ve always loved decorating stuff and I figured why not get paid for it?”

“Maybe after you finish your studies, you could come decorate my home,” Ron joked lightly. “My home’s a dump.”

“Yeah, but don’t think I won’t charge you just because you bought this drink,” Leila joked back. “And my fee will not be cheap. You better be ready to pay up.”

“Of course, of course. How much do you charge a person with a government salary?” Ron asked.

“Well, probably not that much,” Leila said. I can’t believe how much I enjoy talking to him, she thought as she was sipping her frappacino.
